The Ratings Thread (Part 25)

What time was that? Be interesting to know if it grew, or fell away.
Interesting that the peak was lower than the full overnight average for the previous episode last November. Perhaps they didn't promote it enough..... ![]() |

Wow, another thread after just 20 days. They seem to fly thorugh nowadays.
It was obvious Downton would peak at the start then fall away after 10pm. |

It was obvious Downton would peak at the start then fall away after 10pm. Still, to lose only 1 in 9 viewers over the hour isn't that bad. That BBC website piece is a disgrace, and does Spooks a grave disservice. Did the ITV Press Office draft it? |

And, I don't know if the 8.9m figure on the (previous) ratings thread includes HD or not. And if the drop off on the 9.3m figure is 1.3m (9.9m to 8.6m over 90 minutes), I wonder what the drop off was on the 8.9m figure. |

Excellent for TXF last night...and it's highest rating of the series so far! I wasn't sure if it would be up on Saturday's rating as it did fall Sunday last week. Looks like just a blip. With +1 included its just down 0.1m on last years final auditions show. Last years auditions averaged 10.8m for the full-slot overnights whilst this year they averaged 10.6m (inc. +1: 11.0m). Averages calculated from full-slot overnights
Very good start for DA. I was expecting a slightly higer figure if I'm honest, but not much bigger than the 9.2m (inc. +1) rating is achieved. Spooks held up OK, but again, I was expecting closer to 5m. I think DA will remain very steady throughout its run because as TXF climbs, I would expect DA to do the same if the lead-in is larger. |

It is a sloppily written article. I'm guessing the 9.3m figure is a combination of ITV1 and ITV1+1.
And, I don't know if the 8.9m figure on the (previous) ratings thread includes HD or not. And if the drop off on the 9.3m figure is 1.3m (9.9m to 8.6m over 90 minutes), I wonder what the drop off was on the 8.9m figure. When did ratings get so confusing? That BBC article is terribly written, comparing overnights with officials for Downton.Really great start for Downton, it was pretty much where I expected it to be and I'm sure it'll either stabilise or improve further from here. I wouldn't read too much into the 1.3m drop off as the first 15 mins will have been inflated by TXF, and the last 15 mins will have been dented by people tuning out early as the show ended. Bearing in mind that last year's finale had a 17m lead in and aired against a sub-3m documentary, to be only 0.8m off it is really good going. Last night had similar competition to episodes 2-6 of last year's series, and they mostly got 8.8m, so to be +0.5m on those episodes despite a longer running time and a lower lead in is terrific. Spooks held up pretty well but it still seems a bit of a waste to put it there when it could do a million more elsewhere. Seems a bit of a shoddy way to treat the last series of a show that's done so well for them over the years. The X Factor did really well last night. It was up +0.7m on last week, and was almost identical to the same episode last year. Overall this year's auditions have averaged 11.0m (inc +1) and are up +0.2m (+2%) on last year to make them the highest rated auditions ever. Really impressive stuff. I suspect that for bootcamp and judges houses, the Saturday ratings will be about the same as last year, but the Sunday ratings will be a bit down as they got crazily high last year and I can't see them being matched. Having said that, they should make up the shortfall with the first few Sunday live shows, which I think could be up on last year as the show dipped a bit for a few weeks at that stage last year. Holding Out For A Hero should be pulled immediately. It's had 2 chances now and it didn't improve last night. Imagine how low it would be without TXF to prop it up! ITV have another series of The Cube ready to air, so they should bring that forward a few weeks to run instead of HOFAH, and sort out something to fill the couple of weeks after The Cube has ended later. |

Holding Out for a Hero will cost ITV next week if it remains in the schedule. I predict Channel 4's family movie premiere X-Men Origins: Wolverine will beat it, bringing in close to 3 million viewers similar to previous big premieres Iron Man and Taken earlier in the year. And viewers will be unlikely to ditch the movie when it's in full swing, in turn denting The X Factor, which won't be able to match the 12.6m rating it managed for the equivalent episode last year.

I know ITV1 want to get their money's worth out of Downton but I think the 90 minute episodes are dragging down the average, I wonder how it'll do with 75 minute episodes which probably is 50 minutes with ads, last night's episode was 67 minutes without ads.
Big Brother did alright but I think Warship hurt it, why put a repeat on when they could fill that slot with a film? |

It's quite confusing. I think, that the 8.9m rating is the tapechecked average excluding +1, the 9.0m rating is the full slot rating excluding +1, 9.2m is the tapechecked rating including +1, and 9.3m is the full slot rating including +1.
When did ratings get so confusing? That BBC article is terribly written, comparing overnights with officials for Downton.I read the 9.3m figure on BBC Text this morning, and spent the rest of the day thinking I'd gathered more RPG points than I actually had!

The ridiculous to the sublime is really summed up by ITV1's ratings last night, with Holding Out for A Hero Holding Out for a Viewer at 7pm before the big shows kicked in. That's another disaster to put next to Elaine Bedell's name; can she survive in her post much longer? Superb for The X Factor and Downton Abbey performed brilliantly despite what some may say.
BBC One yet again held up very well; their Sunday night schedule is very settled but I fear that means that's another couple of slots lost to different programming on the channel as Countryfile and Antiques Roadshow take over. Spooks held up very well considering the opposition and Nature's Miracles Babies did ok in it's slot. That's a terrific figure for Match of the Day 2 - only 0.5m off the Saturday show. Top Gear did well for a repeat at 7pm, but is it ever going to get a rest between series or will it be used as filler? World's Most Dangerous Roads performed reasonably but A South American Journey struggled slightly in comparison at 8pm. Big Brother has bounced back slightly, and should really gain again tonight considering the lack of competition compared to the weekend. The early film also performed well for Channel 5 though some momentum was lost with Warship - the 8pm documentaries are very strangely scheduled; why not start the film an hour later and forget about the documentary? I assume Grand Designs is a repeat on Channel 4? If so, that did pretty well. Back From the Dead struggled in the 8pm slot and He's Just Not Into You didn't light up the ratings board at 9pm. We're still waiting for this creative renewal from Channel 4 - do you think they've forgotten about it? |

If you'd told someone twenty years ago, that 7 to 9pm on Sunday night would be taken up with that and the Antiques Roadshow, rather than drama and comedy, they'd have thought you were mad! |

The admin guys are complete chickens now with this thread - go on, dare you to let it get to 150+ pages. And it's always a new thread of the back of eagerly anticipated ratings - looks like the next one might fall around the weekend of The X Factor live shows beginning. Picking up two comments from the last thread: Quote:

That's interesting that the Health Lottery will also be screened on ITV1 as well as Channel 5 every Saturday night. If it takes off it will be interesting to see if the two channels can use it in a similar way to the BBC and The National Lottery, building successful formats around it that incorporate the draw.

Both are perfectly valid sets of numbers, as yours are the tapechecked numbers and mine are for the full slots I think.
