I think the issue is more about it being 'water cooler TV' rather than whether or not people vote. People need to have watched both shows by Monday morning when they go to school/work.

Comedy is a very subjective thing though.
If you look at something like My Family I suspect that before its debut the vast majority of people would have looked at that and predicted it would bomb and yet it was incredibly popular (and I suspect John Cleese wouldn't have been singing its praises had the script been sent to him). Who would have predicted the success Miranda has seen? Very few people I suspect.
Ultimately though comedy in this country has suffered because we just don't make it anymore. The Cleese comments tend to sum it up nicely. We've gone from a situation in the 70's-90's where we had an endless supply of comedy writers to now just having a handful of them. I think BBC1's new commitment to comedy is a good thing but they have to stick with it and actually start grooming new comedy writers. That both BBC3 and BBC4 are becoming more overt feeders for BBC1 and 2 should help that and give them somewhere to develop new comedy writers in a relatively low pressure environment. Sky's commitment to comedy helps a lot as well.

I agree and I think not only the BBC, but Channel 4 as well, they need to reestablish a comedy night, the pilot season is good but they need to mix it up a little so say they had Friday Nights as a two hour comedy block, they could do:
9pm US comedy or British comedy
9.30pm British Comedy or US comedy

With Fox ordering time-zone adjusted fast national ratings, we've known for a while that Terra Nova was adjusted up a tenth to a 3.1 (and flat vs. last week's premiere)

It would be nice to see some original scripted commissions from Five and comedy would certainly be a good place to start there. They should probably buy in some US imports to start paving the ground for original comedy somewhere in much the same way Sky has over the past couple of years.
The utterly random way in which C4 have scheduled all of their comedies in recent times is somewhat mind blowing. I agree that refocuses on a comedy night is something they need to do. It'll be interesting to see how they schedule 2 Broke Girls which I believe was brought for Channel 4 and not E4.

I think this was posted earlier in the week but week two (episode three) of Terra Nova pulled a 3.1 in the demo on Fox which was flat with the debut. That would be less than Fox were hoping for before the show started but that it was stable in its second week would likely have been more than they were hoping for. I still don't see how they can possibly renew at this level but we'll see...

That's excellent for SCD - although it lost 750k viewers to TXF at a stroke come 7.30pm, the audience stayed at 9m for the final half hour which is massively, massively more than it could ever have got at 5.30 to 6pm had they moved it completely out of TXF's path. And that is so impressive against TXF when in 2009, it just got blown out of the water.
As ever, the early teatime starts hurt SCD badly - just look how rapidly the audience builds on BBC1 from 6pm to 6.30pm. Next week SCD starts at 6.25pm so should be hooking 8m from the start, not the 6m it had to make do with at the outset last night.
The 9.40pm start didn't really help Casualty - although it went easily through 4m and presumably overtook Jonathan Ross in the 10-10.30 half hour, it had to make do with 3.7m at the start. That is poor, and particularly as TXF was only getting 10.8-11m at that point, not 15m or anything excessive. With an early 9pm start next week against TXF's second hour, Casualty looks like tanking big style next Saturday with probably no better than 3.7m.
It needs to find a new home, at least in the autumn because they cannot justify spending so much on a flagship show to see it rating so low - admittedly, it will timeshift over 4m.

And that breakdown shows Rossy looks like becoming the latest recipient of the "biggest turn-off on TV" award - he didn't even manage to hang on to half of TXF's closing audience for his first 15 minutes, averaging 4.7m across the first 15 mins from an 11m lead in. Be interesting to know how many ITV viewers had switched off before his titles even rolled.

I've said this before and I'll say it again - the BBC needs to dramatically reduce the episode order for Casualty. Airing it (basically) year round is doing it and them no favours. The same is probably true of Holby City. Not having both of those shows on the schedule for half of the year would free them up greatly and allow them to add something new to their line-up and they desperately need that (on Saturday night in particular).

IIRC they bought Joey and Two and a Half Men to establish a comedy block but it fell by the wayside although they did commision a few comedies like Suburban Shootout. Personally I think a homegrown crime drama would be better for them and would be compatible with their US dramas. Co-productions or outside funding should be looked at as models for funding homegrown drama and comedy.

It has remained relatively flat series on series although I think the last series was down due to airing in January against tough competition. Think it'll do 1.6-1.8m for the first episode. I do think should there be another series and if they can fit in Paul's schedule, they should send him to Australia!

Agreed. They resume showing Season 4 of The Big Bang Theory tonight by the way, if you've been following the ongoing rants of mine about their god awful treatment of their funniest show perhaps as a fellow frustrated viewer, after a break of over 6 weeks. I say tonight, but really I should say Monday morning:
12:10am: The Big Bang Theory: 4x22 The Wildebeest Implementation
12:35am: The Big Bang Theory: 4x23 The Engagement Reaction
4x24, the series finale no less, has not yet been scheduled. But I guess they might show it, if they can be bothered to source the tape. And you can make life interesting by playing the "what night will they bury it on this week?!" game when the next set of schedules come out.

I'd forgotten that Five were the UK broadcaster who got saddled with Joey. That show just screwed every network it was on.
A British crime drama sounds good in theory but once again raises this issue of exactly what audience Five want. They brought Big Brother with this idea of attracting a new and younger audience and I don't see a British crime drama really fitting in with that drive. One of the major failings on Five's part with Big Brother has been a lack of compatible programming to run with it. I think some comedy potentially works much better alongside what Five is apparently going for than a crime drama would.

This is so annoying - I honestly think C4/E4 could push this show to around 2 million viewers - it's been getting 1.1m on E4 - and I think with better advertising and consistent airings it could really be a big hit for them!

That would be good. Although Stephen Tompkinson did an Aussie travelogue series for ITV1 not so long ago, and it didn't really rate.

It's plain to see they only care about the E4 viewers so I'm wondering why they bother to show it on Channel 4 at all. I only waited for HD - big mistake - as the fifth season is now well underway in the US and the fourth is out to buy here in the UK and they still haven't finished showing it.
Next year I think I'll buy the boxset and boycott Channel 4's ridiculous handling of this show altogether. E4 is okay if you don't mind the big gap in the middle and a low quality picture on Freeview.
I don't know the details of Channel 4's rights deal for the show but I would urge Channel 5 to look into it. This would be a big ratings banker for them in the 6:30pm timeslot. They could also play new episodes in between Big Brother evictions. Think about it 5!

I think that would be a mistake. They can't buy another 'former' Channel 4 show this soon. There's a decent number of comedies nobody has brought still out there that they can (and should) grab.

Why not? It's not like when Sky grab shows from other broadcasters and they go behind a paywall. Every Tom, Dick and Harry can receive 5.
US comedy imports are dodgy. Only one or two shows max seem to take off and some just bomb completely. Last season I don't recall any of the new ones making it to a second season? And also with something established like Big Bang they've got 100 odd episodes to play with straight away, so that's another advantage.
Interesting news about Family Guy though. I really do think we could see a bidding war for that one, wouldn't be surprised to see C4/E4 win the rights.

I'm sure I've read that C4 have a life long deal for Big Bang Theory. It's clearly an E4 show though and rightly so - it's only on C4 as schedule filler really, and indeed I think is about the only E4 imported comedy to get a C4 airing.
