Over in America Fox's new comedy New Girl has started very strong with a 4.7 in the demo. Its been a good season for comedies so far this year what with CBS on Monday night and Up All Night debuting big for NBC.

EDIT - Also NCIS beat Glee in the demo it seems. (Glee being reported as a 3.8 whilst NCIS looks to have broken a 4)

US Ratings

Glee down massively from last year and easily beaten by NCIS in both total viewers and the demo. Fox’s new comedy New Girl however did big business at 9PM and much like NCIS out performed Glee in both the demo and total viewers. None of the 10PM dramas cracked a 3 in the demo by CBS’ Unforgettable started out ok. Body of Proof is down vs. last season and Parenthood continues to struggle although after Monday night it’s the least of NBC’s worries. Biggest Loser also very disappointing for them. ABC may also be worrying about Dancing with the Stars which didn’t bounce back from Monday’s lows.

While New Girl is off to a great start, I think FOX should be worried that Glee was down. Isn't this the final season with most of the cast?

NCIS is still a juggernaut and Unforgettable did good, think it was slightly up on The Good Wife's number although the timeslot skews old.

I think the BBC got a bargain

No one seems to know what the hell is going on with the Glee cast situation. Ryan Murphy said some of the cast would be graduating and leaving at the end of season in an interview. Apparently though he hadn't told those cast members or his other executive producers that was happening because another exec said that whilst cast members would be graduating this year they wouldn't be leaving. I feel the whole incident was a telling insight into the creative process at Glee.

Worth mentioning that Glee dropped 1.7 in the demo vs. last seasons opener and is down 0.8 vs the season two finale (although that had an American Idol lead-in). Those are big drops it needs to at the very least hold steady next week.


But on the minus side the BBC also got John Barrowman.

Fox have released time zone adjusted figures for their line-up which results in increases for both Glee and New Girl.

4.0 is a reasonable start for Glee, considering most people thought Season 2 was weak. Was never going to get anywhere near last years, and obviously makes money for Fox in other ways, Fox will be delighted with the night, I'd have thought.

Big rating for NCIS looks like it could be yet another year-on-year increase for the show. 9th season and still increasing!

Standout rating for the Great British Bake-Off, which is a really big hit for BBC2. It pinned down Holby on an otherwise pretty buoyant night for BBC One. EastEnders managed a pretty impressive total, and The Body Farm didn't fall as far as I had anticipated considering the reaction. Could still be touch and go over the next 4 weeks as to whether it's considered a keeper, though.

From two sublime evenings to a frankly ridiculous one for ITV1. It confuses me why ITV keep commissioning and placing these shows in slots where everyone with any sort of interest in ratings knows they're going to fail. They have just never bothered trying to break out of the rut on Tuesdays and I suppose now they never will - just bide their time until the football moves back there.

Channel 4 - well, with the exception of Hollyoakes, thats a really ugly looking evening. Inside Nature's Giants just doesn't suit 8pm, Seven Dwarves got a big build-up in the seeming hope that it was the new BFGW but has now sunk, and Shameless has been steadily run into the ground. On the back of those dismal year-on-year share comparisons, it just highlights the mess that channel is in.


It's very lazy, but I suppose they do it because it guarantees them two lots of pretty respectable-to-strong ratings at minimal-to-zero cost.


Is this the same Sky1 whose controller, in every interview I've ever heard, rallies so passionately against derivative programming?

Its a reasonable start for Glee assuming it maintains at this kind of level.

Worth remembering that season 2 started with a 5.1 before settling in the 3.7 range and then getting an American Idol spike for the season finale. If it sees that kind of audience erosion again it'll settle at a 3 if not lower. That's not good.

A lot of ifs and buts in there, but why is even a 2.8 that worrying? It's not an expensive show, they pay most of the cast peanuts, and make loads on digital sales, DVDs, merchandising.

Because...

a) It is an increasingly expensive show. Any show that becomes a hit inevitably becomes increasingly expensive and Glee was actually never that cheap to begin with.

b) If the shows popularity decreases the digital sales, DVD's and other merchandising sales decrease with it. They released a big Glee 3D movie over the summer that bombed for example.

c) A 2.8 would be a worrying number for any show that's supposed to be a flagship show.

d) It wouldn't stop at a 2.8. If the audience erodes at a similar rate and level this year as it did last year then a potential fourth season would see even bigger drops you'd be looking at it starting at 3 and ending at a 2 (if not lower).

Keep in mind that its taken a show like House 7 seasons to see the kind of drops we're hypothetically throwing around for Glee here and its now entering what is likely its final season. Right now Glee is actually reminding me a lot of Heroes.

Season 1 - Huge international phenomena that became a global brand.
Season 2 - Creatively terrible season that destroyed the audiences good will toward the show and brand
Season 3 - Couldn't recover from season two and just kept dropping
Season 4 - Died.

We'll see if Glee can do what Heroes couldn't and rebound from a terrible second season or not. Also keep in mind Heroes aired on NBC and that's pretty much the only reason it got a fourth season (although the international success helped a little).

Were they the top AI figures for the week?

We don't seem to hear much about AI figures anymore.

a) Maybe it is expensive, I don't know, doesn't really compare to sci-fi shows, or things were they pay Hugh Laurie squillions.

b) It would go down, but it's still a big plus for the show Glee 3-d was very disappointing, but still made more then double it's production costs, and that's before DVD sales. After all it was just basically a camera following around an incredibly successful tour.

c) is it the flagship show, would have thought American Idol was.

d) Oh so now 2.8 is disappointing, because it would fall even lower, ok not sure how we're turning 3.8, into 1.8, but even if that did happen, Fringe survives on the network with 1.4 doesn't it? It's not a network over-run with big scripted success. A lot of emphasis on Terra Nova, I think for Fox.

Hey, I'll admit I'm a Gleek, but I'm always constantly amazed at the alarm bells sounding with every slight dip in ratings for the show. It's been going on since season 1.

Edit Hasn't collapsed like Heroes yet, but I take your point.

What a figure for The Great British Bake Off! Next up for it...daytime! The Hairy Bikers did reasonably well at 9pm and Dragons' Den managed to attract a decent figure for a repeat. I don't think Later has ever achieved a fantastic rating.

It was avery good night for BBC One. EastEnders recorded a strong figure and a superb share and Holby City bounced back after an ever so slight slump. I think The Body Farm will slowly see viewers trickle away, like many BBC One Tuesday night dramas. The Bomb Squad pulled in an adequate figure though could've done better considering how other post news slots have done.

The 7.30pm slot is a really hard one to fill for Channel 5. I think they should run an hour long show from 7pm and see how it does, with the news taking the 6.30pm slot. The news can't do much worse against the big two than it is already and they may be more competitive at 7pm. CSI: Miami was hurt by The Body Farm; Big Brother seems to be a consistent performer between Monday and Friday and Revealed didn't do too badly at 8pm.

As said by Robbie, the plus one figure for Mayday, Mayday is absoluely stunning. 71 Degrees North would perform much better in a different slot; ITV1 shouldn't be sacrificing returning shows just to try and gain respectablity on a night they can't be bothered to sort out. It think it could rate around 4m with support.

Seven Dwarves has really been cut down to size very quickly considering how the launch rated. Shameless is a shadow of it's former self and Channel 4'll be disappointed to see Inside Nature's Giants being bettered by Revealed. Hollyoaks did well again, though.

I see ABC are continuing the pointless filler show before the Results for Dancing on the Stars...and they wonder why it's struggling! Body of Proof's figure isn't the best.

CBS will be delighted that NCIS beat Glee in the demo, though should NCIS have lost so many viewers considering it's the same franchise? Unforgettable performed adequately; it'd probably look a whole lot better had it achieved 0.1 more in the demo!

Glee needs to bounce back; that isn't a brilliant figure for it on Fox by any stretch of the imagination. The New Girl performed very well for them, though, and Raising Hope at least maintained a demo figure above 3.0 in the 9.30pm slot though should it have managed more considering it was away from a natural junction on the other big channels?

I don't think Tuesday's will be NBC's first point of call to clear up what is quickly becoming a poor fall. At least all three shows achieved above 2.0 in the demo; Parenthood only 0.2 off Body of Proof despite a smaller lead in.

The CW had a poor night; I noticed aa repeat of Ringer was aired on Monday in the same slot. I'm not sure if that's wise; it's no better than ITV2 running the same film over two nights TBH.

Will 2011's average rise much for the last two episodes?

You do know that 10 million people watch it in total and that talking about overnights on their own is grossly misleading, don't you?

a) The licensing of songs is a complicated and expensive business especially when you have to license them internationally and for DVD releases and digital downloads and CD releases as well. Fox spend a lot on promoting the show and brand as a whole as well. Network drama and comedy isn't cheap in general and Glee certainly isn't an example of something on the cheaper end of the spectrum.

b) Absolutely the additional revenue streams are important although they don't matter to Fox (the network). The issue will be whether Fox (the production company) are willing to use those additional revenues to off set the cost of the show to Fox (the network). Discussing all of this gets very confusing...

c) Glee is absolutely a flagship show for Fox. Its replaced House as the flagship scripted show on the network.

d) Fringe survives because its produced by Warner Bros. who are willing to take a front end hit on producing the show in the hopes of making money in the back end with syndication, DVD sales and international sales. From Fox's perspective Fringe is a cheap show. Their license fee for it is relatively small. There's also a major difference between Fringe and Glee (in so, so many ways) in terms of public perception and importance to the network.


Alarm bells would be ringing for any show that starts its season at a 5.1 and then proceeds to drop down to a mid-3 across the season. That is a huge drop. Like I said Glee's problems start if it continues to fall and repeats the audience erosion it saw last year. It cannot afford to do that. No show can afford to drop that hard that fast.


I think it made (some) sense this time around to have a recap show given that the first show was going up against a big night on CBS on Monday. Also as low as these filler numbers are history suggests that actually trying in that slot doesn't work out a whole lot better for them and costs a whole lot more.


It was up against two unscripted shows though both of which have some degree of audience overlap with the Glee/New Girl lead-ins. Although Ringer saw noticeable gains at 9:30 so it looks as if at least part of the audience who sampled New Girl weren't interested in Raising Hope at all.


You'd think so but as things stand Parenthood only has a 16 episode order. The thought was/is that it'll make way for Awake midseason but NBC might change that plan moving forward. Unless the rest of the schedule over performs (and I don't see that happening) I'm guessing Parenthood gets more episodes ordered sooner rather than later although I could see it moving to Wednesday 9PM midseason (I don't see Harry's Law surviving that slot) or Thursday 10PM (I don't see Prime Suspect surviving that slot).
