Did anyone on this thread watch EastEnders tonight? Just wondering if the whole country got a trail between the end of 'Enders and the start of the news summary, or if it only happened in Wales?

I did, but I switched off when I saw that awful half finished looking black screen for "if you have been effected by any of issues..." so I didnt see the promo.

What issues would you have been effected by in EastEnders? I didn't think anything was happening in EastEnders at the moment...

Or do they just run that as a default these days just in case someone complains?

Just wondering because BBC Wales showed a trail for their Welsh language S4C soap, and it got me thinking how ratings would be affected if a programme started 30 seconds earlier in Wales than it did on the network. Would the Wales viewers be counted in the officials for the period of time the programme was shown both in Wales and on the network (i.e. all but 30 seconds of the network broadcast), or would the Wales viewers be discounted as they would be if the programme was shown in Wales later in the evening or the next night?

I think I need to get out more.

It was for the cervical cancer storyline, although it tends to appear at the end of most episodes these days, for one reason or another.

There was also Ben who continues to struggle with being a Mitchell, and his sexuality.

Jodie coping with the fact Darren left her on his wedding day, whilst Syed and Christian continue to struggle with family and their wedding plans.

Also Yusef gave Zainab an over dose of drugs, after she said she wanted to reconnect with her family.

Personally I dont know how I cope with EE these days, there is that much happening, its a wonder im not a nervous wreck.

And now I'm starting to remember why I don't watch EastEnders.

And its still not as depressing as Corrie at the moment. Rape, brain tumours, miscarriages and kidnap all up north.

And now I'm remembering why I don't watch Coronation Street.

That's a superb figure for Modern Family! The Middle and Revenge performed reasonably well around it; and ABC'll be pleased that they've bounced back after a slightly limp start to the season.

CBS had a reasonable night considering the opposition. Survivor seems slightly low though - does it usually rate that low in the demo?

That's not a brilliant start for The X Factor, but then the first series didn't do brilliantly in the UK or Australia...the question is, will it improve with age?

Law and Order's figure looks pretty good considering NBC's previous week. Harry's Law performed very poorly and did Free Agents. Up All Night did ok considering.

I think CW would prefer to be around 1.0 mark; especially for America's Next Top Model but they were hurt by the scheduling from ABC, FOX and CBS.

I most confess there is alot of scheming men in the square at the moment, be it Michael Moon, or Yusef, that and being a Mitchell is hard work, I wouldnt want to be one.

Its usually a little higher. The X Factor appears to have dented it slightly.

Relatively disappointing for X Factor USA. Of course under normal circumstances a 4.4 would be excellent for a new show's premiere, but with all the hype and fuss I expected a bit more. If it can hold at that sort of level then FOX will definitely keep it as those are still big numbers. It'll dip tonight (probably below a 4) but it will hopefully bounce back next Wednesday.

It does however seem a bit silly to be picking at a 4.4 when you look at NBC. What a dreadful start to the season they've had. Playboy Club, Free Agents and Harry's Law are all horrendous flops, whilst Biggest Loser is really tired now. Parenthood isn't exactly a smash either. The Sing-Off got off to a low start but if it can go up into the 2s they should be relatively happy with it. SVU didn't do well by it's own standards, but did quite well by NBC's standards. That's reasonably promising for Up All Night.

As for tonight, I think both Whitney and Prime Suspect will start OK but I can't see Whitney lasting long. If Prime Suspect can settle in the low-2s or higher they'll probably stick with it. I can't help wondering whether NBC would be better off with something like this in the Spring:

With WDYTYA and Dateline on Fridays and Celebrity Apprentice and The Firm on Sundays. That schedule has the obvious advantage of bringing an extra hour of The Voice into the schedules (which would knock Glee further) and provide Awake with a good lead in as well as Smash. Biggest Loser could hold up OK against Idol and could give Up All Night some sort of lead in support. Biggest Loser would also probably benefit from being shorter. I've swapped SVU and Parenthood just because they fit better with the rest of the nights they are on that way around.

One other thing - wow at Modern Family! That's a fantastic start and it's so deserved as it really is the best comedy on TV.

I can’t help but wonder if they’re getting cold feet about airing The Voice on Monday nights midseason. I suspect if The Sing-Off doesn’t grow over the coming weeks NBC may quietly shift The Voice back to Tuesday nights and perhaps move Biggest Loser to Monday in its place.

It’s going to be interesting to see where they put Awake midseason. The general assumption has been that it’ll land Tuesday at 10PM in place of Parenthood but I wonder if they might end up shifting it to Thursday 10PM and the old ER slot. Although that assume Prime Suspect won’t hit (although that feels like a safe assumption). Also worth remembering that NBC have a few comedies in reserve for midseason including the Chelsea Handler multi-cam which seems to have some degree of potential. Again the general thought was that NBC was gearing up for a ‘female night’ with their comedies with Whitney and Chelsea (assuming Whitney can last that long). There’s 30 Rock, Bent and BFF (and possibly something I’m forgetting) waiting as well. On paper Bent seems like a good pairing with Up All Night although so does 30 Rock.

NBC’s midseason is difficult to work out right now. I will however say there's probably zero chance 30 Rock gets The Office lead-in again and I doubt SVU moves from Wednesday 10PM.

ANTM has been struggling in recent cycles, but was not as damaging as cycle 16 and this one. Until then, they were on a decline, but still managed to get by. This must really hurt CW, as this cycle is their all-star cycle and they were hoping for a bounce in numbers. They have started casting for cycle 18. If it declines further, CW might not see the light of day for Cycle 19 and 20. Then again, H8R is doing much worse.

the way the Mitchell family tree is on the show, we might all be Mitchells, and just not know it yet.

Chances are we are either Mitchells or Dingles if we look back far enough.

Not a good night to head into after a shaky start for FOX. American Idol dropped 20% from Wednesday to Thursday earlier this year. Throw in the fact that X Factor is a new show...

If it does lose 20% then that'll be a 3.5 (based on final ratings). There are only 2 shows (the 8pm hour NBC comedies) that I'd be 100% sure in saying will rate lower than a 3.5.

The Big Bang Theory, Grey's Anatomy and The Office will definitely be higher.

I think both Charlie's Angels and particularly Person of Interest would hope to be higher than a 3.5.

Given the lead-in, I think Whitney could be in mid 3's. Depending on how PoI does, The Mentalist should stay in the mid 3's.

So out of the 11 shows, X Factor could potentially finish 8th or 9th tonight. It will finish 2nd at best at 8pm, possibly 3rd. And will likely finish last at 9pm.

The BBC1 lineup did OK against the stronger than usual ITV1 lineup last night. The Scottish football would have boosted Waterloo Road and Planet Dinosaur last night but dented Who Do You Think You Are?, as it was 7:15pm kickoff and so would have been largely post match analysis after 9pm. Scottish football has seen Waterloo Road overnights boosted by around 1 million viewers in the past, although it was a much lower profile game last night so would not have been that much. Waterloo Road's highest ever overnight rating of 6.0m was recorded on a Scottish football night, however Waterloo Road's highest ever regular (non-football) overnight rating is only 5.3m so that shows how significant it can be.

Over on ITV1 last night, Coronation Street did well for an episode out of its normal slot and it certainly bodes well for the permanent move back there next year. New Midsomer did reasonably by its standards, (and wasn't shown in Scotland either), it will be very useful as a repeatable program later on for ITV3.


I absolutely think that Holby City should be left to a graveyard post-news slot in Scotland, it rates horrifically. The equivalent rating networked across the UK would be less than 2m - and this is a weekly rating on primetime BBC1 (Scotland). I personally am a fan of Holby City but it clearly does not work being chucked into any old slot in Scotland, and to think that it is pushing high rating programs like Outnumbered into 10:35pm slots is ridiculous. If Holby were put into a regular late evening or even night time slot then fans could still at least record it. River City, which airs instead of Holby in Scotland 8pm Tuesdays, does well; rzt posted some shares a few months ago showing it about 1 share point below what Holby City gets.

Next week Holby City in Scotland is airing at 9pm on Thursday whilst the rest of the UK gets Outnumbered and Would I Lie To You? Strictly Come Dancing is on Friday next week, hence the move.

I don't think The X Factor will drop that hard. If it does then Fox (and the show itself) is in some serious trouble. It should stay above a 4 tonight.

Oh and I'm 99% sure that NBC's 8PM hour won't make it to a 2.5 let alone a 3.5. Poor Community and Parks.

that is a big prediction for Charlies Angels, im not going to predict any US ratings, im pulling back from US TV at the moment, want to focus on British, and TV from elsewhere in the world.
