378,800 (2.2%) for last night's series premiere. This was down over 10% on the series 1 average of 426,200 (2.4%).

However, 115,400 (1.3%) caught up on E4+1 at 11pm.

The drop for the inappropriately scheduled Queens Palaces seems to explain the DM uplift?

Well it's better than scheduling a new drama against Doc Martin. Oh, wait...

The 8% share was an improvement on the previous night's disaster. Came 5th in its time slot though which must come as some relief for 4.

1.6 for Hollyoaks, incredible! Highest of the year by far and nearly the highest since PM took over I bet. Brilliant when e4 on friday got 620k and usually with those figures, Hollyoaks tends to get 1.1 to 1.2 million the next day.

Better than usual performance from Dispatches - very close to beating Panorama.

But I still thought it would rate better than that, given the subject matter.

C4 (inc C4+1)
18:30 - Hollyoaks: 1.6m (7.5%)
Although the raw number includes +1 here, I don't think the share does (that's how these ratings work right?). And that is Hollyoaks biggest share since July last year. Very good. Year-on-year monthly average for this month is still down however.

With +1 excluded it will have to beat 1.41m to become the highest rating Hollyoaks of 2011 so far.

Did it come 5th? I reckon 3rd. DS makes it 1.38m for lazy clip show Rude Tube. And I'd be surprised if BB wasn't easily ahead of Newsnight.

BB had a round 1.4m, same as most of last week. RT managed a slightly higher share due to the usual Channel 4 trick of 65 minute runtimes.

Both are in today's Digital Spy article:

I wonder if that was blip or if it is to do with the Silas storyline which i am finding great at the moment. Jeff Rawle is such a great actor. I do think if Hollyoaks focused on more drama with 18+ students it would do much better. If you look at the times of their peak of the years, its always involved older characters (Max, Claire saga for example)

Agreed. I think the current serial killer storyline will be helping, it seems to be big on Twitter and is supported by online viral activity (http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/soaps/s1...ans-video.html) and word-of-mouth. If these ratings are maintained it looks like it's paying off.

If there wasnt the hype (or promotion!) maybe DA would have launched lower. but anyway the DA hype is coming from public interest and isnt manufactured.
I can't help but laugh at the suggestion the Downton Abbey hype isn't manufactured. Of course it is.

22:00 - BBC News at Ten: 3.9m (19.6%)
22:35 - A Question of Sport: 2.4m (16.4%)
23:05 - Spooks: 0.8m (9.3%)
Anyone know why they didn't just run that Spooks repeat at 10:30? Surely if the point of this repeat is to give viewers who watched Downton instead the chance to catch up scheduling it so that it ends before midnight might be a little more helpful and likely mean it rates better?

I don't watch Hollyoaks, but a few of my friends have posted on Facebook saying that the storyline is getting ridiculous and has been going on for too long?

They are people who wouldnt usually post about television shows as well...

I used to watch Hollyoaks and they did tend to drag out their storylines.

Maybe the Emmys were fake too?

I think its fair to say from comments from real people who watch tv as a hobby and live a balanced life, that they were actually looking forward to Downtons return

And its amazing how many of these real people who watch television as a hobby whilst living their balanced lives (did you just lift that sentence from an ITV PR piece?) work in the media and are in a position to share this not at all manufactured love for the show with the nation via absurd levels of press coverage.

The idea that the Downton Abbey hype is 'normal people' talking about it and not manufactured is possibly one of the most ridiculous things I've heard in a long time. Yes, undoubtedly, it is popular with audiences but that doesn't negate the obscene level of manufactured hype that surrounds the show.

And don't even get me started on the absurd nature of the Emmys (and that's not specifically Downton's win but the Emmys in general).

I can testify that a lot of friends and family have been discussing the show for many weeks, and since it finished last year they have been awaiting its return. I have also overheard a conversation in a coffee shop about the new series, people purchasing the new book and lots seeking out the first series on DVD.

Red or Black was hyped, Downton Abbey is just liked by lots of people.

I can't imagine why, it just seemed like glossy period soap to me.
