Shocking figures. I hope they don't realise the UTV schedule is just the same as the ITV1 London schedule. or they'll stop watching that too!

The demographics of Northern Ireland are such that UTV always does better than BBC One. If you have any figures for the South of England for that night the story would be rather different.
But yes the Norn Iron folks dont like the southern English much - neither side. They much prefer the Northern English which I suppose ITV still best represents.

Ah you have IVC - otherwise known as In Vision Continuity. Northern Ireland is the last place in the western world to practice this.
![]() There are some disturbing YouTube clips of the BBC dabbling in In Vision Continuity in the late 1970s or early 1980s.For some reason those ratings have given me a mental image of people in NI rigging up coathanger aerials to watch EastEnders on RTE1 rather than BBC One, cos watching it on RTE would stop it being a BBC show.

NBC air Sunday Night Football exclusively (and pay a lot for it). CBS and Fox share the rights to afternoon games and alternate national Sunday airings. ABC did own the rights to Monday Night Football but Disney opted to move it to ESPN to boost it. The big downside for that move for Disney is that it means ABC can no longer air the Super Bowl which alternates between NBC, CBS and Fox.
It seems a bit stupid - losing ABCs right to the Superbowl just to boost a sports channel.Who's got the rights to it this year, and are there any rumours about how they're going to use it? |

It has an ad break on RTE - it does ok for RTE but its a bit behind Coronation Street and Fair City, RTEs own 4 night a week soap
Does RTE have fewer ads than we get on ITV etc here, and fewer trails than we get on BBC and ITV? |

It's a shame that new or growing ABC shows cannot benefit from a Superbowl lead-in anymore. The last ABC show to get the Superbowl push was Grey's Anatomy with 38 million viewers, way back in season 2 (2006). In the long run, did moving MNF to ESPN help or hurt ABC/Disney?
Quote:
I do wonder why ESPN doesn't air the Superbowl, I imagine it would the highest rated programme on cable. ESPN pay a lot more money for Monday Night Football compared to NBC, CBS and FOX. I do wonder if SNF would be lucrative for CBS at the expense of Sunday Afternoon football and it solve their woes on Sundays,
In terms of Sunday Night Football I’m sure CBS would be interested in it but NBC won’t let it go without a huge fight since it pretty much keeps their schedule afloat single handed. Last year NBC ended the Fall season a tenth ahead of ABC in the demo average pretty much entirely because of Sunday Night Football. By the end of the season they were two tenths behind ABC in the demo average. Quote:
It'll be interesting how Terra Nova does tonight, I think if it can break 10m, it'll be considered a success. After X Factor fell short of expectations, FOX must have finger crossed this will perform well,
On an X Factor related note its Live+3 numbers took it up to a 5.0 which is still below the Live+SD numbers of The Voice's debut on NBC. That's actually quite a terrible stat for Fox. Some selected highlights from Live+3 Modern Family – 7.7 (1.7 / 28%) Two and a Half Men – 12.1 (+1.4 / 13%) New Girl – 6.0 (+1.2 / 25%) Glee – 5.0 (+1 / 25%) 2 Broke Girls – 7.9 (+0.8 / 11%) Up All Night – 3.1 (+0.7 / 29%) X Factor [Wednesday] – 5.0 (+0.6 / 14%) Ringer – 1.2 (+0.3 / 33%) Dancing with the Stars [Monday] – 4.4 (+0.4 / 10%) |

TV3 used to do the same with Coronation Street to annoy UTV - start a little before the network so viewers watch it on TV3 not UTV It annoys UTV as they sell quite a lot of Dublin based ads for the cable audience

So Dr Who is at 8.4m in total?
It does seem to be routinely coming in a 8m+ once timeshift is taken into account. |

Good article by the always interesting Steve Hewlett in today's Media Guardian: BBC3 and BBC4 need to be sorted out if the BBC is to save itself
I agree with a lot of what he has to say. Certainly the importance of multi-channel offerings was totally overstated 10 years ago, and the importance of the big channels was very undervalued. He is spot on though with his assessment of BBC2 and how it was hit by both BBC3 and BBC4, plus of course any of it's big hits being snatched by BBC1. I still think Newsnight is an issue for BBC2 aswell - not so much the bulletin itself, but it being placed at 10.30pm. If BBC2 could play out films, drama etc. at 10pm I think it would have a much more appealing schedule. |

I suspect ive been just as harsh on BBC Two, as anyone. Part of what needs to happen with DQF is that all of the BBC’s channels and stations need to be given their own specific remit and focus. Everything has started to overlap and become very integrated which isn’t strictly speaking a bad thing but it isn’t a great thing either and is no doubt leading to wasted spending. |

IMoving Monday Night Football has helped Disney as a whole greatly. There’s no chance ESPN would have grown as strong as it has without the aid of Monday Night Football and ESPN is now a huge money spinner. Bigger picture wise it has hurt ABC but not to the degree that many predicted it would although that’s primarily because they’ve had the likes of Dancing with the Stars, Grey’s Anatomy and Desperate Housewives sustaining them since it departed. With those shows now faltering things may be about to get incredibly uncomfortable for ABC.
ESPN would absolutely love to air the Super Bowl but they aren’t allowed. The NFL is insistent it airs on broadcast television to ensure that it remains the biggest television event of the year (the broadcast nets are pretty insistent on this as well). And they also insist that the broadcasters of the Super Bowl air regular season games as well which is a large part of the reason Fox and CBS lay down such a large chunk of change for the afternoon games, without them they wouldn’t be able to air the Super Bowl. The Sunday Afternoon Games tend to do very well sometimes even better than Monday and Sunday Night Football especially when they overrun. Think CBS' afternoon football overrates FOX's afternoon football even though FOX pays $100m more for it. |

Interesting figures from UTV in Ulster regarding Saturday nights - figures for 3rd Sept
7pm Red Or Black 248k 40% 8.15pm X Factor 474k 60% 9.15pm Red Or Black 321k 44% 9.45pm Jonathan Ross 150k 22% and on BBC1 7.00pm Doctor Who 69k 12% 8.35pm Casualty 70k 9% Primetime Share 6pm-10.30pm BBC1 63k- 10% UTV 262k - 40% Maybe as well, though, UTV is a very well established brand with its own announcers and identity and isn't run from London like the BBC, which is important to people over there. |

This really is the best thread on DS, I know some people get a little carried away but in the main most people get on fine.
Enjoy university time D.M.N. but be sure to keep checking in during your down time or you will miss the GeorgeS / Robbie Sykes battles, the anti-BBC / ITV / C4 / C5 (delete as applicable) rants.... The last 3 months of the year are the real highlights of TV ratings - even if I can't get to my laptop, I always keep my phone close at hand. |

Junior MasterChef seems to have gone off the boil, TEN must be praying that doesnt happen to MasterChef itself.
