Very good for Doc Martin once more. Traffic Cops collapsed in opposition. It's not your usual monday night fare, but then the BBC would probably be criticised (a la Spooks) if they ran something stronger there to be pinned down by ITV. Not sure they can really win, to be honest. Soaps seemed a bit hit and miss, with EE and Corrie 2 having very low shares by their own high standards.

A great premiere for Terra Nova on Sky1, but the scheduling at 8pm seems really weird. Doubtful that we're looking at that much of a long runner, either, given the premiere numbers on Fox. We'll probably be able to say a lot more about it's future quite shortly.

I'm impressed by that - a young, current, credible act. Just what was needed. Interesting they've announced it now - perhaps to try and cajole a few others into the chairs by offering some reassurance about the direction they're going. We should give Danny Cohen credit for being far, far more in touch than his predecessors on things like this - it looks like he's going to leave the casting of the show to the producers who really know, which would be refreshing.

I'm sure it won't air opposite BGT, but it is rather looking like it could be running in the same months of the year. I'd have totally gone for the Saturday night soft spot of January, but there's no way - surely - it could be on air for then given where they are. So it looks like a post-Six Nations thing, which I don't think is great. The press will build up a battle with BGT even where there isn't one - and The Voice would have to compete for attention. It could still work, but I think it makes the whole thing much harder.

Did they get criticised for that? Must have missed it. I don't think there's much of a crossover between Spooks and Downton to be honest, completely different dramas.

Episode 1 of Downton Abbey got a consolidated rating of 10.94m (inc HD)

As things stand there's next to no chance that Fox won't air all 13 episodes they've ordered. They have far too much invested in the show not to make them and show them so the show would have to spectacularly collapse for them to pull it. It does however seem incredibly unlikely that a second season will happen though.

Its really, really boring having to trawl through your blind defensiveness of C5 all the time on this thread. I mean, I can understand supporting of an underdog, but your aggressive, dogmatic approach just makes the channel and this thread look bad now. Stop attacking posters who make reasonable critisms of Channel 5! It's a forum in which discussion should be free, not people having to be treading on egg shells whoever C5 is mentioned in case of load of from you.

The title for the discussion was crass, as you admitted.

That Amy Childs programme just looks like drivel.

Poor start for Celebrity Wish List and Hotel Inspector. ITV had a good night.

Jessie J is a brilliant choice for The Voice. Popular, good looking, talented and very current.

Speaking of Terra Nova it held up very well in week two (episode three) in the US with a 3.0. That's still a lot lower than Fox would have wanted but at least it hasn't shed its audience from last week. House returned with a decent 3.9

According to provisionals at TVByTheNumbers, it did a 3.0 in the demo last night and only fell 3%.

You are defending the indefensible. The numpty on the Wright production team who came up with "Foxy Knoxy - Would Ya?" should be asked to go round and justify his fun and amusing tag line to the Kercher family in person.

I would.

Someone let Matthew Wright know...

I've got no more to say on this subject, we're going round in circles and it has nothing to do with TV ratings anyway. But you can find a full response from Matthew Wright and the show team on the Metro article:

Quote:
“Presenter Matthew Wright defended the segment, telling Metro.co.uk: 'For the last four years, the world has been more than happy to refer to a woman, then presumed to be a killer, as "Foxy Knoxy" something I find appalling. 'I thought it would be interesting to find out if mud sticks, or whether an innocent young woman could now go out and behave in a perfectly normal way. The real disgrace is the Foxy Knoxy epithet.'

A Wright Stuff spokesperson added: 'The discussion conducted between Matthew Wright and our panel of Kelly Hoppen, Christopher Biggins and Liz McClarnon was handled extremely sensitively and at no point did we lose sight of the fact that at the heart of the matter is the tragic death of a young girl - Meredith Kercher.'”

Why are Channel 5 starting this Amy Childs documentary in December? Why not start it in January surrounded by the complementary Celebrity Big Brother? And that would also avoid it having to air over Christmas/New Year

Presumably they want to fill the void so that 16-34s don't desert the channel en masse in November. There is also Tamara Ecclestone's new reality show starting around the same time.

The real story of Monday’s numbers might very well be the disaster at ABC.

Dancing with the Stars at another series low for a performance show and the only 10PM hour they had last week above a 3 gone with Castle’s drop. They have to be incredibly worried by the rest of the season.

ABC

8PM: Dancing with the Stars – 3.0
9PM: Dancing with the Stars – 3.1
10PM: Castle – 2.6

CBS

8PM: How I Met Your Mother – 4.5
8:30PM: 2 Broke Girls – 4.4
9PM: Two and a Half Men – 6.1
9:30PM: Mike & Molly – 4.3
10PM: Hawaii Five-0 – 3.2

Fox

Terra Nova – 3.1
House – 3.9

NBC

8PM: The Sing-Off – 1.8
9PM: The Sing-Off – 1.8
10PM: The Playboy Club – 1.2

The CW

8PM: Gossip Girl – 0.7
9PM: Hart of Dixie – 0.8

So why is Dancing with the Stars not so popular this season? It seems odd. Are viewers just bored with it, or is it do with the cast?

It's a shame it's hurting Castle.

I agree. When they came up with the title, it had nothing whatsover to do with ratings.

Who knows. It may just be burnout with the format ABC have been running two cycles a season since 2005 or it might be part of a larger burnout on reality competition shows. ABC should be terrified though because The Voice is now looming large for midseason and that might very well crush its second cycle.

In additional news Terra Nova has been adjusted up already and achieves 100% retention with last week. That's very impressive.

Most discussions about Ch 5 programmes seldom have anything to do with TV ratings!

I can see this one having legs, frankly. If Sachsgate brought down Ross and Brand, then this could have ramifications for Ch 5.

What a sad indictment of modern Britain that the convicted killer of a British citizen in what was clearly a sordid and sorry tale should have her conviction quashed and all a mainstream British TV channel wants chav Brits to phone in and debate is whether they'd now try and sh@g her if they met her in a bar!

And then said channel shamelessly seeks to justify its position.

I wonder what the Daily Mail and The Sun will make of this tomorrow?

You could say the same about discussions about BBC/ITV/Ch 4/Sky programmes in here. We don't all like to talk about the same things, it's what keeps the thread interesting.

Impressive once again for the CBS comedies. All 4 of those shows look in excellent health - and the block just works really nicely, with the veterans aiding the debut or sophomore shows. Obviously TAAHM has come out of the turmoil smelling of roses, but I'm also really impressed by HIMYM. The numbers looked like they were flagging towards the end of last season but it's come out fighting this year - it's nearly a whole ratings point ahead of the year ago equivalent, and coming close to series highs in total viewers. Extremely good for a seventh season of a show where there seems no rhyme or reason for people to be tuning in now.

Fox will be mightily relieved that Terra Nova held up so well. And a bit surprised too, I'd imagine. House obviously isn't the titan it once was, but its still a player.

And very concerning news about DWTS. A collapse there is pretty much the worst thing ABC could imagine considering how much of the primetime schedule the show holds up each year. I don't suppose The Sing Off is hitting it? Can't be doing too much damage with a 1.8 - but maybe its another small contributing factor. ABC never had non-scripted opposition before - if it is a factor, then god knows what The Voice will do!

Actually, NBC will probably be satisfied with The Sing Off. It doesn't stink any worse there than scripted shows did last season and must be considerably cheaper. Has more of a chance of growing too, if viewers do slowly start to drift away from the likes of the CBS comedies as winter properly hits.

All in all, there's definitely something funny going on with Mondays this season. It's been very difficult indeed to predict.

With Terra Nova how relevant is it that the first episodes time shifted like Doctor Who does here (from 3.1 to 4.1) ??

Are the US so much more instant viewing fixated that this will not help secure the show?

Still very strong for CBS, I thought episode 2 of TAAHM was poor so I'm surprised it didn't fall further this week. Ashton Kutcher is running into scandal after just 2 weeks in the job so that might help keep the buzz going. Everything else doing well for CBS. Even H50 looking decent enough at 10pm with a win in the demo.

FOX must be relieved - great hold for Terra Nova which means that with that, X Factor and New Girl, FOX can boast the 3 best second episode retentions of the new season. House is probably benefitting from it as well FOX will be 1st on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and 2nd on Sunday and Monday. The big swings might not be posting massive numbers at this point, but put together, FOX is looking very strong across the week right now.

It helps. But not too much. It's all about commercial viewing - so some people will be watching the ads despite recording it and that will help.

But it's the overnights that count. You only start to look at the other stuff for borderline shows. Right now, it's international sales that are Terra Nova's biggest asset.

For the broadcast networks in the US, the overnight ratings are the most important because that's what determines ad rates. Not that networks don't care at all if an extra 2 million people watched a show within 7 days of its premiere, but that won't help get more money from advertisers!

Regarding Dancing with the Stars, I think the "lack of a compelling cast" is the primary reason for the drop. I'm sure ABC was hoping that including Chaz Bono would stir up some positive buzz/interest, but it hasn't.
