Westlife. How are they still going?!
They were never that good but they must currently be the most lazy, uninspiring, personality-free collection of people in the music industry. They churn out the same stuff over and over, and it sounds like the only people who go to their concerts are the middle-aged housewives crowd. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but Westlife don't appear to have any credibility, yet they are releasing a new album and are showing no signs of bowing out gracefully. At this point I can imagine them on stage as old men with canes, still singing the same old ballads.
It baffles me that they still sell records and get bums in seats. |

I don't know. Coverlife or Blandlife is what they should be called really. They are well past their sell-by date

They have a large fanbase who are over 25 and don't change their favourite band every week. If it ain't broke don't fix it. Not my cup of tea but it should be bloody obvious why they are still doing well. Groups like that don't have a sell by date. Look at Cliff.

Like I have posted before- 15 number one singles and absolutely no musical legacy.
Which when you think about it sums up Simon Cowell and Syco as well. |

The only songs of theirs I would be able to hum would be Uptown Girl, World of Our Own, Queen of My Heart and their cover of I Have A Dream (which I only know as I'm an Abba fan). None of their songs inspire me and they all sound the same.

I resent all this 'their fanbase are middle ages house wifes' nonsense. I'm only 19!
Their albums are very good. The majority of their (later) singles are piss poor and ironically don't showcase their albums at all. They pull off one hell of a performance live, the favourite act I've seen live in fact, absolutely amazing vocals and generally great, fun, performances. The lack of personality thing is laughable too as they can be hilarious in interviews, especially irish ones and watching them on stage is always fun. It's weird though, I'm a big fan but I can see why people wouldn't be. I too wouldn't be if I judged them off their singles alone. They are very likable people when you see them on stage. But they were designed and marketed to appeal to a certain marker and therefore the music they released was never going to gain critical aclaim. Up till now they've never shown any signs of wanting to move massively away from that. They've said they want to release more originals, more uptempos and generally have longer campaigns rather than banging out the albums every year. They moved away from SyCo to do that. However, they're last album, there 'flop' album sold 300,000 of one song alone. If thats the worst you can do then can anyone blame them for not changing? As a massive fan I would love to see Mark write more, he is brilliant from the little we've heard. I hope for more uptempos and a few more creative songs, something a bit fresh. And obviously the main thing is the no covers, but Louis is still their manager so that might be hoping for a miracle. For me, they are amazing vocalists, they put on great shows, are very genuine and likable people and they have some amazing songs buried in those albums. That is why I and I'm sure many others are fans. |

Can't believe they've lasted as long as they have done to be honest.

I think it's pretty bloody amazing really, given the expected shelf-life of a boyband. There were DOZENS of boybands around at the time when Westlife were first huge, who all either split by choice or went down the 'dumper' (God I miss Smash HIts
). They're the only one left from that era I think. Fair play, they've done something right.

Uptown Girl isn't a Westlife original. It's a Billy Joel song, and he did it so much better.

I know it's a cover but I just never knew who sang it first. I must listen to the original. Me knowing only those few songs proves how forgettable their music is really - and I have heard a lot of it as mum's a fan.
Billy Joel's million plus seller (UK sales only) 5 weeks at number 1 hit from 1983 ![]() The only other songs I know by them where originally made famous by someone else-Miss You Nights (Cliff R) Mandy (Barry Manilow) I have a Dream (ABBA) Against All Odds Phil C) When You Tell Me (Diana Ross-originally a solo hit for her in 1991) and that 'Season's in the Sun' one. Then we have the other covers, the old Boyzone /Ronan Keating trick of picking some obscure track and covering it-ummmm Mr Walsh-your bands/artists are so original and here is you sitting on XFACTOR week in, week out, mocking contestants and making bitchy comments about other pop stars. All so wrong really when you think about it. |
