Advice on my first Digital Camera please
Swiftly Does It
20-09-2011
My brother in law has just had a newborn and is wanting to get his first digital camera to take stills and good videos.

His budget is 160 to 200 pounds.

His criteria is.

easy to use
nice and portable
with good quality stills and vids (just amateur use, pics of baby and vids of baby etc)

Just wondered if you guys had any recomends to start looking at as I nor my BIL do not know where to start.

Many thanks for the advice

Canon powershot range are supposed to be easy to use, good picture quality (including low light) and decent video capability.

Don't forget to budget for memory card as well, 16GB should be fine.

Unless you want magnificent quality you should be able to beat that price considerably. I purchased a perfectly acceptable digital camera for £60, plus £10 for a memory card and £5 for a case.

Decide whether you want it to take standard AA/AAA batteries (including the possibility of using rechargeables) or specialist calculator-type button cell batteries. Opinions seem divided on this question.

Check the build quality, especially of the various little hinges and doors for the battery, memory card and cables, as on some models they can be a bit flimsy.

I'd second the call on the Canon. Yes, you can get cheaper cameras, but if you want something with up to date specs (so will last a few years of the kid growing up) and that will output great quality photos and video in a variety of different situations, then it's worth spending a little extra.

Have a look at the Canon Powershot D10.
You may think that you don't need an underwater camera, but it gets the most use in our house. It can go almost anywhere the kids will. Dust proof, sand proof, water proof and shock proof. If you get mud, sand or baby sick on it just run it under the tap. Great pictures too.

Canon or Fuji, can't really go wrong.
