Sneezing and middle lanes. A right thrill ride tonight's episode is...
And shoelaces?

I don't even get the middle lane thing? What is supposed to be wrong about driving there?

And also, Jo Brand wins the one with her expensive and crippling shoes.

There is invariably a thread in General discussion on middle lane drivers

I'd like to see Janet Street-Porter in Room 101. Ignorant, sexist, dinosaur that she is.

Frank was right in the end though. Baiting these half-wits is highly amusing.

I thought that was better than some of the previous ones. As much as I love Ben it was a bit odd that he won them all, shoelaces was ridiculous, it's only because he can't do them (which I find hard to believe). He was spot on with homeopathy though.
I think he missed his target to be honest.

Forget homeopathy, it's the quacks who sell this stuff who I find to be uttely inhuman, uncaring monsters who should be rounded up and fed to the wolves.

Having seen a work colleague die of cancer having refused real medicine, and seen one of these smiling assassins continue to take his money without a hint of guilt or remorse, I would happily have tore her limb from limb with my bare hands.

Beneath contempt.

Those were questions. So answer the questions.

Why shouldn't I drive in a lane that has been stripped from the countryside and paved over? It's got to be some UK convention, eh? Because over here (US) when we go to the trouble and cost of adding a lane to a road it's for moving more traffic. The only lane we would tend to try and move out of is the enter/exit lane on high/freeways which is the rightmost lane.

My husband was nearly knocked off his motorbike by a middle lane driver. There was nothing for miles around on the M1 and he saw this range rover comming down the slipway so he moved into the middle lane to let them on. The driver came on and kept moving across the lanes even though there was still nothing around. The driver had no care and attention and just wanted to sit in that lane. Also in the UK it's illegal to undertake someone on the left (as we drive on the left) you get points and a fine.

Read the Highway Code about driving on a motorway.

Though the example in the photograph was probably acceptable as there appeared to be very little traffic on that section of motorway. The real annoyance is when Lane 1 is empty but Lanes 2 and 3 are both busy which can result in being given a fixed penalty by the police.

I don't think there is a specific offence in passing on the nearside but it is not recommended and if it results in an accident then will be a major factor in any prosecution. The police do sometime charge with general offences is they see someone doing it.

Do not overtake on the left or move to a lane on your left to overtake. In congested conditions, where adjacent lanes of traffic are moving at similar speeds, traffic in left-hand lanes may sometimes be moving faster than traffic to the right. In these conditions you may keep up with the traffic in your lane even if this means passing traffic in the lane to your right. Do not weave in and out of lanes to overtake.
If illegal then the Highway Code uses 'must not'.

Yes, middle and outer lanes are also there to increase capacity when the traffic is busy (many seem to forget that).

But with lighter traffic, the recommendation is to keep left. In practice what happens is that trucks keep to lane 1, and cars to lane 2.

The problem is that illustrated on the show, where there is very light traffic but someone still insists on staying in the middle lane; in the UK, someone in lane 1 isn't allowed to 'undertake' on the inside, but is expected to swerve across two lanes to overtake then back again.

Sometimes the left hand lane is full of slow moving lorries to the horizon. In that situation I will keep to the middle lane, which seems only common sense if I'm going consistently quicker than all those on the left. It would be perverse to do otherwise.
I also keep to the right for as long as possible on a two-lane dual carriageway, because if not, you can guarantee that a moronic lorry driver will try to overtake another lorry, forming a road block for the next two miles or more.

I love Jo Brand.

When Ben put shoelaces in I laughed as I cannot tie them either (maybe he has co-ordination or spatial awarness issues like me). Also has anybody in the history of the show ever had the guts to put The Daily Mail in Room 101?.

Read the Highway Code about driving on a motorway.
All I was doing was asking because it makes no sense to me.

I don't even get the middle lane thing? What is supposed to be wrong about driving there?
I suppose I could go read the Highway Code. I suppose I could research everything I ever wanted to know.

But I thought maybe I'd just ask about it here where the subject is at hand and the people who would simply and kindly be able to respond would be able to do so.

Though the example in the photograph was probably acceptable...

I don't think there is a specific offence in passing on the nearside...

What I see is a lot of "must not / illegal / isn't allowed" Vs "recommended / I don't think ". It's clearly not clear.

And I also see people saying they often stay in the middle lane because it's "only common sense", "it would be perverse to do otherwise", and that "middle and outer lanes are also there to increase capacity when the traffic is busy (many seem to forget that)."

So it's clearly acceptable and, what's more, sensible to do so...

My questions were valid, the issue is not a matter of law, the practice of using the middle lane as a place to move traffic is something that can be seen as sensible and the idea that it shouldn't be used is what is perverse...

So I'm glad I asked.

And! Bonus! I was able to bother one silly and pathetic bigot. YeeHawwwr!!! (Az uz Mercans say when we get them slugs to crawl out from under thems rocks uh thars.)

I would hope that if you drive in the UK then you will already have read the Highway Code and have kept up to date with changes. Ignorance is no excuse to the courts!

You seem to be missing the point of what middle lane hogging is.

As glad as I am at the return of Room 101 in any form, why did they have to bring it back as a panel show???

Frank Skinner is a superb host, no changes needed there.

But the existing format was fine. One celebrity a week, usually with a really great list of angry dislikes, many memorable ones but the John Peel one has to be my favourite. Much more focus and effort went into each subject and it was far less watered down.

One of the main hooks was that it was one solitary persons grumpy dislikes. As soon as you make it more than one person you have completely spoiled that dynamic.

I'm sure this has all been said already, but I thought I'd echo that view if it has.

Maybe the BBC will see sense and revert back to the old format. It's not supposed to be a damn Buzzcocks, 8 out of 10 cats, mock the week type show, so why do this?

The extra storage edition is even worse. As if the edited show isn't boring enough, we get 10 minutes of material that was too dull even for that show.

There were some real uncomfortable silences during this weeks show, some terrible misfires. This format isn't working.
