Getting earphones to fit into my ears!

I've been given an ancient iPod (which is perfectly satisfactory for my needs) so I've bought a set of noise isolating earphones from Amazon. These have collected well over 1000 customer reviews with an average rating of 3.9 out of 5 stars which suggests that they're decent value for the cheap price.

Now, as I understand it, for this sort of earphone to work properly it actually needs to fit into the ear canal. Well, for the life of me, I can't get the damned things to do this! The fitting seems no different from the ordinary earphones and I obviously haven't done it correctly because traffic noise was no different from usual when I tried them. Any hints on how to do it?

You need the proper sized buds for your ears. People's ear canals are not all the same size. The Shures I use come with 3 different types of buds in 3 different sizes each. Only one of these nine different buds do I find work for me. The Shures are expensive, however.

When you put the buds into your ears, push them well in and then twist them around to get a seal. If you don't get a good seal they phones lose their noise reducing abilities - and most of their bass response too.

Might sound a bit daft, but use the opposite hand to the ear you want to put the earphone in and pull your ear up slightly. This will make it easier to fit.

I'll give it a try. I'm starting to wonder if I have unusually small ear canals. I'm using the smallest of the 3 sets of buds supplied and I still can't manage it.

As a last resort I shall get Mrs T to watch exactly where I'm trying to put the things and just ignore the laughter.

The wife swears by these, she prefers them to a £40.00 pair she has - Goldring? I can't quite remember the name.

I have the ear-fitting problem too. I have a pair of Bose earphones which came with 3 sets of buds. I struggle to get them to stay on place with the smallest set - I wonder who could wear the largest set?

I had to get a 'non-bud' set to use at the gym as every set with ear buds continually fall out.
