Humax Foxsat HDR - Picture breakup
flemmo
21-09-2011
Hi all,
I've been having an issue with picture breakup over the last two weeks. It seems to happen at random but usually at least once every 10 minutes. Sometimes the sound cuts out and very occasionally I get the "bad signal" message.

I've been in the diagnostics and the strength is between 90 and 100% and quality at 100% for both tuners. Ive sat and watched the bars for an hour and not once do they drop below 90%. If the signal kept dropping off i would expect the bars to drop right down.

Does anyone have any thoughts what might be wrong?

Not a lot to go on there..For instance..What set is it?..
How long have you had the set working well before the intermittent issue arose?
For that matter ..Have you easy access to the Dish?
So on a broad brush advice basis..
SET up the Foxsat to be one cable input and run like that for several days or untill the break up starts..
Then ..disconnect that cable and use the other one and let us know what difference.. if any ...you notice..

Thanks for the reply.
I'm not sure what you mean by "set"? Is this the satellite receiver? Other than it being a Humax Foxsat HDR I'm not sure what else I can say about it. I've had it for a couple of years now. About 2 months ago I noticed I was getting signal strength issues on some of the higher numbered channels. After a bit of tweaking to the position of the lnb those issues have been resolved. I now get a really strong solid signal according to the diagnostics menu.

See below for the thread I started with those previous issues:

It might be my imagination but BBC channels seem to break up more often than others. Just been watching channel 5 for an hour with no breakup.

I do have easy access to the dish but not sure what to do as the signal is really good and everything seems to be in order.
Ill certainly try the single feed thing to see if one could be causing a problem.

A Factory Reset and full channel rescan would be a good place to start.

I am not sure what the diagnostics menu shows you - It may well be the freesat transponder frequency.

Use the "i" info button on the channels in question to see the quality and strength of what you are tuned to.

Also try some other channels like the CBS ones to see if these are any different.

Diagnostics shows the info for the transponder you are currently tuned to. If you need to check the home transponder tune to 999 first.

I've tried a single cable feed using the same coax from the Humax. In the left socket on the wall I still experienced breakup. However on the right hand socket everything seemed fine.
So it looks like there is an issue with feed 1 somewhere. It could be the wall socket, coax to the lnb or even the lnb itself. This could take some sorting!

This gives me a solid 90% strength / 80% quality on Tuner 1 (in its original combination before I switched over the feeds) and the same on Tuner 2... however Tuner 2 is all over the place and frequently dips to 0%.

I'm assuming then that this isn't the positioning of the dish/lnb? My assumption here is that if it was, both tuners would be affected?

Do you, or does anyone else nearby, have a DECT cordless phone? These can cause interference which can be picked up into the coax cable from the LNB if the screening isn't effective. One cable could be more susceptible than the other due to a bad connection. Just a thought.

Thanks for the reminder Graham - I find it much faster using the "i" information key then using channel up to check a selection of channels.

Hi. Yes I have a DECT phone. I turned it off and moved the handset. It didn't have any effect but thanks for your suggestion.

Try refitting the F connectors on cable 2 (Both ends).

Check the f connectors on the dish for signs of water ingress into one of the cables.
