Does anyone think if Celine was an American, or even if her 1st language was English, that she would have reached even higher levels of success?

Some people argue that she sounds better singing in French, and obviously so as it is her 1st language, and that her English singing, although good, doesnt have the same 'spark' as her French material.

What are your thoughts?

I don't think nationality has anything to do it. Plus why would she need more success. She has reportedly sold over 200 million records. That's amazing. She's had an incredible career. She's only 100 million copies away from Madonna.

I don't think so, maybe slightly, but only ever so slightly - she's still had a ridiculously brilliant career and still going strong now. She's like the 2nd best selling female artist of all time isn't she?

Edit: Sorry, it was Madonna who is first and then Celine and Mariah have around 200 million albums sold WW. Celine has sold more in the UK than Mariah though by around 3 or 4 million

I'm no Celine fan, but i'm pretty sure that she's one of the biggest selling female artists of all time. Not quite in Madonnas league, but certainly not miles behind.

She was the biggest selling female artist of all time at one point.

In 2004, after surpassing 175 million in album sales worldwide, she was presented with the Chopard Diamond Award at the World Music Awards for becoming the best-selling female artist of all time. According to Sony Music Entertainment, Dion has sold over 200 million albums worldwide.
I think it's now:

Madonna
Mariah
Celine

I don't think her being American would have made all the difference. Maybe a little more but it wouldn't change the way she sings, and that's what got her the success she has had. She's had an amazing career. She seems to e seeling more concert tickets than records these days which is where the money is really, so good for her haha

I doubt she's complaining about what she's got

I don't think she could have had more success than she had. She was of Streisand proportions about ten years ago. I don't think of her as a current artist today though and I can't see her ever making a big comeback like Madonna or Maria Carey could do. I think her day is gone.

She probably only slipped from top sellling female artist of all time because she gave up making records to rake it in from doing live shows in Vegas about 8 years ago. But she no doubt made more money from that than she ever would from selling records, so even without the record sales she's probably more "successful" than the female artists who have now outsold her - her Vegas show must have taken hundreds of millions $$ over the years.

The might have actually had less success if she'd been American, as she wouldn't have been able to release all those French language albums etc.

She might not have sold as many records as Madonna, but can Madonna say she won Eurovision?

Album wise maybe, but *points to the following below*

I think you've hit the nail on the head there, she's not so bothered about recording anymore - she knows the market has changed, but she knows that her fans from all over the globe will still want to see her perform.

I will say however, I have liked her last few albums - One Heart in particular, which was quite contemporary, and had some good classic Celine style songs, but with a contemporary twist. Taking Chances was also a very strong album.
It's a shame she wouldn't appeal to the 'younger' generation, and it's often seen as 'embarrasing' to like her - but I'm 21 and I grew up listening to her, Madonna and Michael Jackson so I actually couldn't care less if anyone thought I was weird for liking her. I love Celine and if I don't get to see her within the next few years, I will be VERY annoyed

When I read the title of this thread it left me confused because she is already one of the most successful female artists in music history.... not to mention one of the biggest selling..... so therefore I'm not sure how much more successful she could be.

She has 2 albums coming out next year, 1 english, 1 french. Both them albums together will probably sell over 10 million so she still has that loyal fan base

She needs to lose a few embarrassing habits - beating her chest etc. Some of her facial expressions look a bit daft too.

Less is more, Celine....

I heard that, the english one is only from her Vegas show though with 3 'bonus tracks' which are new

The French album is full of new songs though! Which actually goes back to the point that someone made about her not sellilng as much if she hadn't made those French albums (and it being her first language), I have to agree - and I have to say, I LOVE hearing her sing in French. Beautiful <3

I've always wanted to see her live, I missed my chance three or four years ago when she came to tour in the UK.
