What a great time that was. The good old days. Back when you could find people just a few streets away from you and ............magical things happened in real life

Didn't use chat much as we were using dial up anyone remember that

The groups were good though many animal charities started up in them, I adopted two dogs through the groups system.

MSN got rid of it thanks to the PC brigade saying peodphiles were always on it targeting kids. IMO it was a knee jerk reaction and Microsoft missed out as they would have easily incorporated a social network had they just waited 2 more years. They would have had the biggest social network.
Oh yes.....many a happy hour spent there in the wee small hours

Don't you agree Facebook is no match for the chat rooms?

I used to frequent trivia rooms in both MSN Chat and MSN Groups (used to be called MSN Communities). They closed the chat rooms first and moved them into internal Groups then the Groups quickly followed with closures.

I miss them

yes, msn chat was much better than the other ones

it always seemed like when you were chatting to your friends on the other ones unknown Americans used to turn up uninvited and join in and ask who everyone was..........nightmare !

at least with msn there was control over who was invited in !

also remember the equivalent of msn forums........we had one for 'When ds is down' because the forums used to crash a lot more often in the olden days.......you could go on there and make sure it just wasn't your computer.......

I do miss the internet of the early to mid 2000s. There was just something special about it.

It probably isn't that the internet is so different now or what it offers but rather it's relative 'mass' infancy and you would probably have been in your late teens and found it opened up avenues of communication and friendship that wasn't there before.

I do really miss the Yahoo! chat rooms. I used to literally stay up all night talking, particularly in the movie rooms. I remember receiving (and occasionally indulging) requests to 'cyber' which I never really took seriously (think "I put on my robe and wizard hat"). I gained a proper old school penpal in one of the music rooms that I would exchange actual hand written letters with for years. I often think of looking her up...

Didn't MSN Messenger just morph into Skpe?
My OH and I chatted for hours on Messenger, annoying when it kept dropping out but it was from here to Belgium
That was ten years ago, still together

MSN said it was too expensive to police the chat rooms and cited, "safety" as a reason to move the rooms into internal Groups for the Managers to police their own rooms. They then got rid of Groups citing "safety" too!

Did anyone ever have Trivium? It was a software that allowed you to make quizzes for the AOL chat rooms. Does AOL still exist?

I remember it fondly, the good old days!

Got chatting to someone who I now consider to be one of my best mates through MSN Messenger.

I think it started to die a slow death once it changed its name to Windows Live Messenger.

That is true mostly but it also did seem like another world at the time and not part of the real world as much as it is now and people did not take everything as seriously as they do now. It was also before twitter took off which i have never liked. And that and its toxicity has had a damaging affect on the web. Even if you don't use it you cant escape it.

Only ever used MSN occasionally as this was the pre-smartphone era when I had to be physically sat in front of a computer to use it. Post-millennium I had the nursery slope of WAP phones which had dedicated mobile-friendly social pages (Mopilot for instance) and it's staggering to think something once so futuristic is now decidedly retro... O'course, nowadays I'm all about yer Twitter, with longer screeds dumped elsewhere (DS for one), but it'd be nice to have some sort of one-on-one conversation function back...
