Rob, presumably your request to get this and the other retro threads you started put on a Retro forum was rejected by the powers that be?

If that's true, it's a great pity.

I cannot believe the sort of dross we have to wade through the find this and the other threads:-

Do You Think This Person Is An Icon?

Do You Think That Person Is An Icon?

Beyonce - 4 - You Can Do It B!

Are JLS Growing On People?

Etcetera! Etcetera! Etcetera!

Good grief!

i presume not as well, no ones had the courtesy (so far ) to inform me of any decision. completely agree...

i tend to get the idea though that this forum wants to acomodate the 'towie', paris hilton, jordan' gypsy wedding, spray tan airheads and other morons fans, possibly because they are 'hip' and young and fit the demograph the sites aimed at.

of course, i might be completely wrong!

Good track, but pretty obscure, so is probably more suitable for this thread:-

i like marianne faithful , 'this little bird' and 'come and stay with me' and 'summer nights' were also great tracks imho.

think she is overlooked in favour of dusty, cilla, lulu, sandie and pet who were more prolific but her few singles were all really good.

One of the finest songs of the '60s:

Janis Joplin - Little Girl Blue

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FVpDOIPx_sY

I'd like to add a few underrated Mamas and the Papas songs:

Look Through My Window:

Dancing Bear

Here's another, more famous song about a dancing bear:-

The Alan Price Set - Simon Smith And His Amazing Dancing Bear (1967)

I didn't know that the Mamas and the Papas had covered "Spanish Harlem". This is the first time I've heard it. I think it's fantastic. I like it almost as much as Ben E. King's tremendous original version:-

Ben E. King - Spanish Harlem (1961)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OGd6CdtOqEE

Aretha Franklin's cover version of "Spanish Harlem" was a big hit in the seventies. As sacrilegious as this might sound I don't like her version very much. Here's an Aretha Franklin track I do like:-

Aretha Franklin - I Say A Little Prayer (1968)

In my first ten posts to this thread I submitted my five favourite UK Number singles of each year of the sixties. I’ve now decided to do something similar in my next ten posts with the American Number One singles of each year of the sixties.

I’ve noticed that quite a few of my favourite American Number Ones of the sixties are tracks that have already featured on the thread, so instead of supplying Youtube clips for my five favourites from each year I’ll be listing all my favourites but only supplying Youtube clips for five that are new to thread. If you look below you’ll see what I’m getting at.

Here are my favourite Number One singles in the USA during the year 1960 (in order of preference):-

1. Percy Faith - Theme From A Summer Place
Already submitted to the thread by mushymanrob on 10th October 2011 (Page 3)

2. The Everly Brothers - Cathy's Clown
Already submitted to the thread by Vabosity on 23rd September 2011 (Page 1)

3. Marty Robbins - El Paso
In a previous post I mentioned that although I’m not a big fan of Country and Western music what I do like about the genre is how well some Country songs tell stories, and no Country song tells a story better than this one. Utterly brilliant.

4. Elvis Presley - Stuck On You
Already submitted to the thread by JohnnyForget on 24th October 2011 (Page 4)

5. Brenda Lee - I'm Sorry
I love this one, a terrific piece of Country-flavoured pop by the diminutive lady known as Little Miss Dynamite.

6. Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs - Stay
This track holds the record for being (at 1’39”) the shortest single ever to top the American singles chart.

7. The Drifters - Save The Last Dance For Me
Written by Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman, produced by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller and recorded by an incarnation of the Drifters that featured Ben E. King on lead vocal. Sheer class.

8. Chubby Checker - The Twist
Already submitted to the thread by Vabosity on 24th November 2011 (Page 8).

9. Connie Francis - My Heart Has A Mind Of Its Own
I know that at least one of you is a much bigger fan of Connie Francis than I am, but I still like her a great deal, she has a fabulous voice, and this track is a particular favourite.

And here’s the full list of Number One singles in the USA during that year (in chronological order):-

Marty Robbins - El Paso (4 January 1960 - 2 weeks at no. 1)

Johnny Preston - Running Bear (18 January 1960 - 3 weeks)

Mark Dinning - Teen Angel (8 February 1960 - 2 weeks)

Percy Faith - Theme From A Summer Place (22 February 1960 - 9 weeks)

Elvis Presley - Stuck On You (25 April 1960 - 4 weeks)

The Everly Brothers - Cathy's Clown (23 May 1960 - 5 weeks)

Connie Francis - Everybody's Somebody's Fool (27 June 1960 - 2 weeks)

The Hollywood Argyles - Alley Oop (11 July 1960 - 1 week)

Brenda Lee - I'm Sorry (18 July 1960 - 3 weeks)

Brian Hyland - Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini (8 August 1960 - 1 week)

Elvis Presley - It's Now Or Never (15 August 1960 - 5 weeks)

Chubby Checker - The Twist (19 September 1960 - 1 week)

Connie Francis - My Heart Has A Mind Of Its Own (26 September 1960 - 2 weeks)

Larry Verne - Mr. Custer (10 October 1960 - 1 week)

The Drifters - Save The Last Dance For Me (17 October 1960 - 1 week)

Brenda Lee - I Want To Be Wanted (24 October 1960 - 1 week)

The Drifters - Save The Last Dance For Me (31 October 1960 - 2 weeks)

Ray Charles - Georgia On My Mind (14 November 1960 - 1 week)

Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs - Stay (21 November 1960 - 1 week)

Elvis Presley - Are You Lonesome Tonight? (28 November 1960 - 6 weeks)

I think I've already posted this one earlier in the thread

It's not a song I remember from my youth, I first heard it in the soundtrack of a great B movie from the 80s..........Loveless

It's a biker/road film which saw the debut of Willem Dafoe

Here's the scene from the film........

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WHlNFyRzuxI

It took me years to find the track as I couldn't work it out from the film credits...........I thought it must be 'Coffee House Blues'.........and spent ages searching for it !

Well, good for you.

You may not know this but "Appreciation" threads are for appreciation. There's a DS code of practice whereby a poster is not supposed to make derogatory comments on an appreciation thread about the object of that appreciation.

For the record, although I quite like the early eighties, I think the late eighties and early nineties were utter shite. It's ok to say that as this is not "the late 80's/early 90's Appreciation" thread, but I wouldn't dream of saying that if it were. Respect.

this thread isnt to discuss the fav eras people have... if you want to argue that point please start your own thread . this thread is for fans of 60's music, so coming here making that statement can be construed as trying to wind us up...which is against the rules.

About the only thing they have in common is their diversity...

...and you list your services as 'totally inpartial'... thats hardly an impartial comment is it!

if you were being impartial, youd regard the 60's in context, putting aside your personal preferances, and be able to make an intelligent comment regarding the 60's true worth.

as for the late 80's early 90's... worst ever era in music!
