From Vabosity's list from 1962 above , I'm afraid DJ Otzi's ? version of Hey Baby passed me by , but never mind a different version from above this time named Hey Sweet Baby by Bruce Channel

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pxAxU...eature=related

Was never a hit in The UK in The 60's but made The top 3 in the early 90's .

Bobby Vinton - Blue Velvet

Also passed me by, thankfully. DJ Shadow's Moonlight Shadow is bad enough. A few more covers that made it as hits post 60's.

Blondie cleverly changed the gender of this US one hit wonder.

Randy & The Rainbows - Denise (Blondie)

I wrongly posted this brilliant glam rock cover of The Exciters hit in the rare 70's classics thread. It did of course get into the UK top 5 in 1974.

Exciters -Tell Him (Hello)

It may not change much from the original but I find it an improvement nonetheless.

Turtles - You Showed Me (Lightning Seeds)

Some covers I'm less keen on include Madonna's dance version of American Pie, that oh-so-trendy cover of A Little Less Conversation and anything by Shakin' Stevens!

60's hits that were successfully revived through covers in future decades is the subject of this post.

Into the 90's with a Sonny and Cher classic that was covered by dance group All Seeing I.

Sonny and Cher - Beat Goes On (All Seeing I)
I heard this All Seeing I song, then in 2006 heard Sonny & Cher's original. I found S&C's version brilliant from first hearing. I just listened back to ASI and would not have recognised it as the same song it is that bland and inferior.

one of our underrated classics, it was much bigger in the usa.

often acts are remembered for one big hit (which is often not their 'best'), in this case s&c are remembered mainly for 'i got you babe', yes it was great, but 'the beat goes on', and 'baby dont go' were fantastic tracks that got overlooked here.

Good artist. Good track. Here's a not so well known Neil Sedaka track that I really like:-

Neil Sedaka - One Way Ticket (1961)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4xUl_jck27I

I wrongly posted this brilliant glam rock cover of The Exciters hit in the rare 70's classics thread. It did of course get into the UK top 5 in 1974.

Exciters -Tell Him (Hello)
Here's another great version:-

Billie Davis - Tell Him (1963)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CeGRpaVCVFY

It may not change much from the original but I find it an improvement nonetheless.

Turtles - You Showed Me (Lightning Seeds)
I love both the Turtles' and Lightning Seeds' versions of the song, but I slightly prefer the Turtles' version, if only because I've got a natural bias towards the sixties!

Actually, the Turtles' version is not the original, this one is:-

The Byrds - You Showed Me (1964)

I didn't know that one but I can see why The Turtles version is more popular!

Two brilliant Turtles hits were Happy Together and She'd Rather Be with Me. Whenever I hear either song, it sounds better than the other one. I think SRBWM sounds more uplifting while I prefer the production on Happy Together.

I don't remember Billie Davies at all...........

Just following your link led me to 'Angel of the Morning' from that German Beat Club show (thank God for the Germans - all our 60s hits are preserved on film !)

I think "Tell Him" was her only big hit, but she recorded some great tracks. My favourite is this one, previously posted by Barney on Page 1:-

Have always loved this track from Billie Davies - I Want You To Be My Baby

Of the two tracks I definitely prefer "Happy Together", which as you can see I've previously posted to the thread. Having said that, I think the other one is pretty good too, so here it is:-

The Turtles - She'd Rather Be With Me (1967)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OCcPo8TPjlQ

The Turtles had two vocalists, Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan, both of whom were uncredited backing singers on the classic 1971 T-Rex hit, "Get It On". T-Rex, one of the most successful British bands of the early seventies, had evolved from the acoustic psych-folk duo, Tyrannosaurus Rex, who had managed to score a minor hit with this gem:-

Tyrannosaurus Rex - Debora (1968)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQpexFBNYSQ

The main man in both Tyrannosaurus Rex and T-Rex was, of course, Marc Bolan, who had previously been a member of John's Children, a band who were commercially unsuccessful, but had achieved notoriety with their outrageous live performances and were booted off a tour with The Who in Germany in 1967 when they upstaged the headliners. This Marc Bolan composition is my favourite track by the band:-

John's Children - Desdemona (1967)

Hello...first time in this thread but I love the 60's music....it probably makes up at least half or more of what's on my Ipod. Huge Bobby Darin fan but like most other stuff too.

A couple of my non-Bobby favourites from the era (apologies if they've been done and I've missed them)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X3yN0JvG5co
Chris Farlowe - Handbags and Gladrags

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bAmHh...eature=related
Carla Thomas - Gee whizz

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=98HLe...eature=related
The Toys - Lover Concerto
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5QCp2...eature=related
The Shirelles - Baby It's You

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L-5LwRinkJ0
Ray Charles - You Don't Know Me
I really cannot express just how much I love this song.

Not sure if these have been mentioned around here, sorry, I haven't read all the thread. I have a particular soft spot for P J Proby - either "Together" or "Hold Me".

Similarly Crispian St Peters' "Pied Piper" and "You were on my mind."

I knew that "Release Me" was a cover, but like you I don't know who did the original. I do know the song dates back to the 1940's.

I also knew that "Green Green Grass Of Home" had previously been recorded by Jerry Lee Lewis. I don't know if Jerry Lee's version was the original, but it was certainly the one that inspired Tom Jones, who has always been a big fan of Lewis, to record it. I actually like Jerry Lee's version of the song, which is more that I can say for the Tom Jones version.

Jerry Lee Lewis also did an earlier version (again I don't know if it was the original) of the Rod Stewart hit, "What Made Milwaulkee Famous". Again I prefer Jerry Lee's version to the hit cover version.

Years ago I used to record various songs off Radio 2's Sounds of the 60s. I recently was listening to one tape (yes, tape! lol) and came upon a song I would like to download from ITunes...the only problem is I don't know the official song title, and all attempts at guessing the title come back with a big zero!

I wrote down some of the lyrics...do they ring a bell with anyone?

Yesterday I was thinking of calling you, wondering if you had see her with somebody new, now it all fits in place, i remember his face, i remember she said he was handsome and now he has taken the Light, he has taken the light from my life when the night closes in i know I'll be without her again.

Light, he has taken the light from my life when the light closes in i know I'll be without her again.

Thanks

Great , a chance to post my favourite all time favourite track , just think it's the perfect pop song.

Good Vibrations - Beach Boys

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TCeD_6Y3GQc
Some Christmas songs

Little Saint Nick - Beach Boys

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aSynDh_K0EE

You can never have too much of the Beach Boys. Here are half a dozen of my favourite tracks by this tremendous band:-

The Beach Boys - Surfin USA (1963)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gbRKf...eature=related

The Beach Boys - Don't Worry Baby (1964)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7QB2Ck00YZ8

The Beach Boys - The Warmth Of The Sun (1964)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_TcWUslfvE

The Beach Boys - Do You Wanna Dance (1965)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nrj91gwuONM

The Beach Boys - California Girls (1965)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=boVY83PQvX8

The Beach Boys - God Only Knows (1966)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AOMyS78o5YI

Picking just half a dozen was an almost impossible task. I definitely need to make another Beach Boys post some time in the future.

More on the Beach Boys, and while I agree Good Vibrations is a masterpiece, Do It Again is my fave song of the 60s and potentially of all-time! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bB-evm8Got0

In my first ten posts to this thread I submitted my five favourite UK Number singles of each year of the sixties. I’ve now decided to do something similar in my next ten posts with the American Number One singles of each year of the sixties.

I’ve noticed that quite a few of my favourite American Number Ones of the sixties are tracks that have already featured on the thread, so instead of supplying Youtube clips for my five favourites from each year I’ll be listing all my favourites but only supplying Youtube clips for five that are new to thread. If you look below you’ll see what I’m getting at.
Here are my favourite Number One singles in the USA during the year 1963 (in order of preference):-

1. Kyu Sakamoto - Sukiyaki
You don’t get too many songs sung in the Japanese language topping the American charts. I think this may be the only one ever. Great little ditty, I absolutely love it.

2. The Essex - Easier Said Than Done
A track I’m particularly fond of, although as there's nothing that special about it, I cannot honestly say why.

3. Nino Temple and April Stevens - Deep Purple
Apparently, this was the 100th single to top the American pop charts. Excellent track.

4. Bobby Vinton - Blue Velvet
Already submitted to the thread by Barney06 on 15th December 2011 (Page 12).

5. Lesley Gore - It's My Party
Already submitted to the thread by ironjade on 25th November 2011 (Page 9).

6. Little Peggy March - I Will Follow Him
An excellent English language cover version of Petula Clark’s superb French language track Chariot. Neither Little Peggy March nor Pet Clark had a hit with this song in the UK.

7. Ruby and the Romantics - Our Day Will Come
Already submitted to the thread by Croctacus on 10th December 2011 (Page 11).

8. Steve Lawrence - Go Away Little Girl
Gerry Goffin and Carole King wrote many fine pop songs in the sixties and this is yet another. Mark Wynter had the hit in the UK, but imho the Steve Lawrence original is the superior version.

And here’s the full list of Number One singles in the USA during that year (in chronological order):-

Steve Lawrence - Go Away Little Girl (12 January 1963 - 2 weeks at no. 1)

The Rooftop Singers - Walk Right In (26 January 1963 - 2 weeks)

Paul and Paula - Hey Paula (9 February 1963 - 3 weeks)

The Four Seasons - Walk Like A Man (2 March 1963 - 3 weeks)

Ruby and the Romantics - Our Day Will Come (23 March 1963 - 1 week)

The Chiffons - He's So Fine (30 March 1963 - 4 weeks)

Little Peggy March - I Will Follow Him (27 April 1963 - 3 weeks)

Jimmy Soul - If You Wanna Be Happy (18 May 1963 - 2 weeks)

Lesley Gore - It's My Party (1 June - 2 weeks)

Kyu Sakamoto - Sukiyaki (15 June 1963 - 3 weeks)

The Essex - Easier Said Than Done (6 July - 2 weeks)

Jan and Dean - Surf City (20 July - 2 weeks)

The Tymes - So Much In Love (3 August 1963 - 1 week)

Little Stevie Wonder - Fingertips Pt. 2 (10 August 1963 - 3 weeks)

The Angels - My Boyfriend's Back (31 August 1963 - 3 weeks)

Bobby Vinton - Blue Velvet (21 September 21 - 3 weeks)

Jimmy Gilmer and the Fireballs - Sugar Shack (12 October 21 - 5 weeks)

Nino Tempo and April Stevens - Deep Purple (16 November 1963 - 1 week)

Dale and Grace - I'm Leaving It Up to You (16 November 1963 - 1 week)

The Singing Nun - Dominique (7 December 21 - 4 weeks)
