I’ve noticed that quite a few of my favourite American Number Ones of the sixties are tracks that have already featured on the thread, so instead of supplying Youtube clips for my five favourites from each year I’ll be listing all my favourites but only supplying Youtube clips for five that are new to thread. If you look below you’ll see what I’m getting at.”
Here are my favourite Number One singles in the USA during the year 1963 (in order of preference):-
1.
Kyu Sakamoto - Sukiyaki
You don’t get too many songs sung in the Japanese language topping the American charts. I think this may be the only one ever. Great little ditty, I absolutely love it.
2.
The Essex - Easier Said Than Done
A track I’m particularly fond of, although as there's nothing that special about it, I cannot honestly say why.
3.
Nino Temple and April Stevens - Deep Purple
Apparently, this was the 100th single to top the American pop charts. Excellent track.
4. Bobby Vinton - Blue Velvet
Already submitted to the thread by
Barney06 on 15th December 2011 (Page 12).
5. Lesley Gore - It's My Party
Already submitted to the thread by
ironjade on 25th November 2011 (Page 9).
6.
Little Peggy March - I Will Follow Him
An excellent English language cover version of Petula Clark’s superb French language track
Chariot. Neither Little Peggy March nor Pet Clark had a hit with this song in the UK.
7. Ruby and the Romantics - Our Day Will Come
Already submitted to the thread by
Croctacus on 10th December 2011 (Page 11).
8.
Steve Lawrence - Go Away Little Girl
Gerry Goffin and Carole King wrote many fine pop songs in the sixties and this is yet another. Mark Wynter had the hit in the UK, but imho the Steve Lawrence original is the superior version.
And here’s the full list of Number One singles in the USA during that year (in chronological order):-
Steve Lawrence - Go Away Little Girl (12 January 1963 - 2 weeks at no. 1)
The Rooftop Singers - Walk Right In (26 January 1963 - 2 weeks)
Paul and Paula - Hey Paula (9 February 1963 - 3 weeks)
The Four Seasons - Walk Like A Man (2 March 1963 - 3 weeks)
