Two very different versions of the same song... Sailor...

The first by Petula Clark http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ERy5sp3-jf0

And the second by IMO a much neglected singer Jean Campbell http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hMckpUU6MP0

Both from 1961.

The first was released in 1958 but finally made it right at the start of the 60s.

Brenda Lee must have been about 14 years old when she recorded that! Good choice, Gneiss, one of my favourite Christmas songs.

Here are two Christmas songs that I like even more. Just like the Brenda Lee song, they too were recorded in the fifties, but did not enter the British charts until re-released in the sixties:-

Chuck Berry - Run Run Rudolph (1958 / 1963)

Elvis Presley - Blue Christmas (1957 / 1964)

We’ve now arrived at 1964, the year of the so-called British Invasion. Nine British singles topped the American chart that year, of which six were by the Beatles.

Here are my favourite Number One singles in the USA during the year 1964 (in order of preference):-

1. The Animals - The House of the Rising Sun
Already submitted to the thread by Vabosity on 7th October 2011 (Page 3).

2. The Four Seasons - Rag Doll
Already submitted to the thread by JohnnyForget on 16th November 2011 (Page 8).

3. The Beatles - Love Me Do
Already submitted to the thread by mushymanrob on 25h October 2011 (Page 4).

4. The Beatles - I Want To Hold Your Hand
Already submitted to the thread by Vabosity on 3rd October 2011 (Page 3).

5. The Beatles - A Hard Day's Night
The title song from a terrific film (imho much better than Help!) and also the title track from the only Beatles album on which every song was written by Lennon and McCartney.

6. Manfred Mann - Doo Wah Diddy Diddy
Manfred Mann were one of Britain’s best blues bands of the day and they also recorded some terrific Dylan covers, but they could still put out great pure pop singles like this one. Versatile bunch.

7. The Beach Boys - I Get Around
Not one of my favourite Beach Boys tracks, but still a goody.

8. Mary Wells - My Guy
Classic Motown.

9. The Beatles - I Feel Fine
This track marks the earliest example of the use of feedback as a recording effect.

And here’s the full list of Number One singles in the USA during that year (in chronological order):-

Bobby Vinton - There! I've Said It Again (4 January 1964 - 4 weeks at no. 1)

The Beatles - I Want to Hold Your Hand (1 February 1964 - 7 weeks)

The Beatles - She Loves You (21 March 1964 - 2 weeks)

The Beatles - Can't Buy Me Love (4 April 1964 - 5 weeks)

Louis Armstrong - Hello, Dolly! (9 May 1964 - 1 week)

Mary Wells - My Guy (16 May 1964 - 2 weeks)

The Beatles - Love Me Do (30 May 1964 - 1 week)

The Dixie Cups - Chapel Of Love (6 June 1964 - 3 weeks)

Peter and Gordon - A World Without Love (27 June 1964 - 1 week)

The Beach Boys - I Get Around (4 July 1964 - 2 weeks)

The Four Seasons - Rag Doll (18 July 1964 - 2 weeks)

The Beatles - A Hard Day's Night (1 August 1964 - 2 weeks)

Dean Martin - Everybody Loves Somebody (15 August 1964 - 1 week)

The Supremes - Where Did Our Love Go (22 August 1964 - 2 weeks)

The Animals - The House of the Rising Sun (5 September 1964 - 3 weeks)

Roy Orbison - Oh, Pretty Woman (26 September 1964 - 3 weeks)

Manfred Mann - Doo Wah Diddy Diddy (17 October 1964 - 2 weeks)

The Supremes - Baby Love (31 October 1964 - 4 weeks)

The Shangri-Las - Leader Of The Pack (28 November 1964 - 1 week)

Lorne Greene - Ringo (5 December 1964 - 1 week)

Bobby Vinton - Mr. Lonely (12 December 1964 - 1 week)

The Supremes - Come See About Me (19 December 1964 - 1 week)

The Beatles - I Feel Fine (26 December 1964 - 3 weeks)

Here are my favourite Number One singles in the USA during the year 1965 (in order of preference):-

1. The Righteous Brothers - You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'
Already submitted to the thread by Vabosity on 12th October 2011 (Page 3).

2. The McCoys - Hang On Sloopy
Already submitted to the thread by JohnnyForget on 4th November 2011 (Page 6).

3. The Temptations - My Girl
This Motown classic was not a hit in the UK until re-released in 1992.

4. The Rolling Stones - (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction
The Rolling Stones had eight American Number One singles (five in the sixties and three in the seventies), of which this was their first.

5. Herman's Hermits - Mrs. Brown, You've Got A Lovely Daughter
Very quaint and very English, which is probably why it appealed to the Americans so much.

6. The Beatles - Eight Days A Week
Already submitted to the thread by Vabosity on 30th October 2011 (Page 5).

7. The Byrds - Mr. Tambourine Man
Dylan's original and the Byrds' chart topping cover are very different. The latter is very much an abridged version of the song and its famous intro was written by Roger McGuinn and not Bob Dylan, so is not found on the original. I like both versions. When I'm in the mood for superior mid-sixties pop I'll listen to the version by the Byrds and when I'm in the mood for some lyrical wizardry I'll listen to the original. Currently, I'm in the mood for superior mid-sixties pop.

8. Sonny and Cher - I Got You Babe
There have been times when I’ve tended to judge Cher rather harshly because of (what I consider to be) the dross she released in the eighties and nineties, but back in the mid-sixties she did record (what I consider to be) some wonderful tracks with and without her then husband.

And here’s the full list of Number One singles in the USA during that year (in chronological order):-

The Supremes - Come See About Me (16 January 1965 - 1 week at no. 1)

Petula Clark - Downtown (23 January 1965 - 2 weeks)

The Righteous Brothers - You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin' (6 February 1965 - 2 weeks)

Gary Lewis and the Playboys - This Diamond Ring (20 February 1965 - 2 weeks)

The Temptations - My Girl (6 March 1965 - 1 week)

The Beatles - Eight Days A Week (13 March 1965 - 2 weeks)

The Supremes - Stop! In the Name Of Love (27 March 1965 - 2 weeks)

Freddie and the Dreamers - I'm Telling You Now (10 April 1965 - 2 weeks)

Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders - Game Of Love (24 April 1965 - 1 week)

Herman's Hermits - Mrs. Brown, You've Got A Lovely Daughter (1 May 1965 - 3 weeks)

The Beatles - Ticket To Ride (22 May 1965 - 1 week)

The Beach Boys - Help Me, Rhonda (29 May 1965 - 2 weeks)

The Supremes - Back In My Arms Again (12 June 1965 - 1 week)

The Four Tops - I Can't Help Myself (19 June 1965 - 1 week)

The Byrds - Mr. Tambourine Man (26 June 1965 - 1 week)

The Four Tops - I Can't Help Myself (3 July 1965 - 1 week)

The Rolling Stones - (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction (10 July 1965 - 4 weeks)

Herman's Hermits - I'm Henry VIII, I Am (7 August 1965 - 1 week)

Sonny and Cher - I Got You Babe (14 August 1965 - 3 weeks)

The Beatles - Help! (4 September 1965 - 3 weeks)

We’ve now got to 1966, imho a terrific year for American Number One singles. I’ve listed eleven favourites, but I love about 90% of the singles that topped the American charts in that year.

Here are my favourite Number One singles in the USA during the year 1966 (in order of preference):-

1. The Beach Boys - Good Vibrations
Already submitted to the thread by Barney06 on 23rd September 2011 (Page 1).

2. ? and the Mysterians - 96 Tears
Sixties garage rock classic.

3. The Rolling Stones - Paint It Black
Already submitted to the thread by Vabosity on 16th October 2011 (Page 4).

4. The Association - Cherish
An excellent track from a fine American sixties band who were criminally ignored in the UK.

5. Tommy James and the Shondells - Hanky Panky
Another excellent track from another fine American sixties band who were (despite their 1968 UK chart topper Mony Mony) also criminally ignored in the UK.

6. Lou Christie - Lightnin' Strikes
Already submitted to the thread by Barney06 on 16th October 2011 (Page 4).

7. The Troggs - Wild Thing
This song was written by an American chap calling himself Chip Taylor, whose real name is James Voight, and who is the brother of actor Jon Voight and the uncle of actress Angelina Jolie - how’s that for trivia?

8. Simon and Garfunkel - The Sound Of Silence
Already submitted to the thread by JohnnyForget on 1st November 2011 (Page 6).

9. The Lovin' Spoonful - Summer in the City
Already submitted to the thread by Barney06 on 16th October 2011 (Page 4).

If you look below you’ll see what I’m getting at.”

Anyone with a good memory will remember that in my post reviewing the UK Number One singles of 1967 I had a good old whinge about how sub-standard they were. I couldn’t feel more different about the American Number One singles of 1967; some cracking tracks topped the US chart that year.

Here are my favourite Number One singles in the USA during the year 1967 (in order of preference):-

1. The Doors - Light My Fire
JohnnyForget previously submitted this magnificent track to the thread on 20th October 2011, but the clip he supplied has been removed from Youtube, so here’s an alternative clip.

2. Strawberry Alarm Clock - Incense and Peppermints
Let’s follow one psychedelic classic with another.

3. The Young Rascals - Groovin'
Already submitted to the thread by Capablanca on 22nd September 2011 (Page 1).

4. The Turtles - Happy Together
Already submitted to the thread by JohnnyForget on 20th October 2011 (Page 4).

5. The Association - Windy
Like most Association singles this gem was completely ignored in UK.

6. The Box Tops - The Letter
Already submitted to the thread by swingaleg on 2nd October 2011 (Page 2).

7. Aretha Franklin - Respect
Already submitted to the thread by JohnnyForget on 20th October 2011 (Page 4).

8. The Monkees - I’m A Believer
Already submitted to the thread by Vabosity on 18th October 2011 (Page 4).

9. Bobbie Gentry - Ode to Billie Joe
Already submitted to the thread by Vabosity on 10th November 2011 (Page 7).

10. Lulu - To Sir With Love
This fine track, Lulu’s only chart topper in the USA, was not released as a single in its own right in the UK. Instead it was released as the B-side to Let’s Pretend, a single which would neither set the world alight nor make the UK Top Ten. It would seem that someone at Lulu's record company may have made a bad decision.

11. The Rolling Stones - Ruby Tuesday
Already submitted to the thread by Vabosity on 30th October 2011 (Page 5).

12. The Monkees - Daydream Believer
The second of two Monkees singles to top the US chart in 1967; two very different songs, but each having the word Believer in its title. Unfortunately, my favourite ever Monkees single, Pleasant Valley Sunday, which was also released in 1967, never hit the top spot. Perhaps it would have done had they called it Pleasant Valley Believer.

And here’s the full list of Number One singles in the USA during that year (in chronological order):-

The Monkees - I’m A Believer (31 December 1966 - 7 weeks at no. 1)

The Buckinghams - Kind of a Drag (18 February 1967 - 2 weeks)

It's bloody annoying when that happens!
