Another one to add- ''Dock of the Bay' by Otis Redding. I think it was late '67 early '68.

I love the 1960s. Better than any of the rubbish released over the last 20 years. I don't even follow the charts any more and have never heard the majority of the songs. Most of the songs I have heard have been crap which is why I don't follow it. My favourite year for music was 1966. |

Anyone with a good memory will remember that in my post reviewing the UK Number One singles of 1967 I had a good old whinge about how sub-standard they were. I couldn’t feel more different about the American Number One singles of 1967; some cracking tracks topped the US chart that year.
Here are my favourite Number One singles in the USA during the year 1967 (in order of preference):- 1. The Doors - Light My Fire JohnnyForget previously submitted this magnificent track to the thread on 20th October 2011, but the clip he supplied has been removed from Youtube, so here’s an alternative clip. First single and first track on the album, a stomper of an opener. Break on through (to the other side) b-side to Light My Fire. Although most of the songs contain some reference to drugs, this sounds the most like it was written under the influence. Crystal Ship Probably something of a tribute to the many bars they frequented in San Francisco when they started out, this is one of two brilliant covers on this album. Alabama song (Whisky Bar) Time to live, Time to lie, Time to laugh, Time to die.. Take It As It Comes This song sounds apocryphal to the many Doors fans who believe Jim Morrison killed himself in that Paris hotel room bath. (I myself believe in the counter-theory that he died on a nightclub toilet and was whisked there by the publicity-shy owner) The End |

In my first ten posts to this thread I submitted my five favourite UK Number singles of each year of the sixties. I’ve now decided to do something similar in my next ten posts with the American Number One singles of each year of the sixties.
I’ve noticed that quite a few of my favourite American Number Ones of the sixties are tracks that have already featured on the thread, so instead of supplying Youtube clips for my five favourites from each year I’ll be listing all my favourites but only supplying Youtube clips for five that are new to thread. If you look below you’ll see what I’m getting at. 1. Paul Mauriat - Love Is Blue Beautiful orchestral version of (and imho far superior to) Luxembourg’s entry to the 1967 Eurovision Song Contest. The original song, L’amour Est Bleu, sung in French by the Greek singer Vicky Leandros, could only manage fourth place in the contest, a long way behind the United Kingdom’s first ever winner, Puppet On A String, sung by Sandie Shaw. 2. The Doors - Hello I Love You Superb track by imho one of the all time great American bands. 3. Simon and Garfunkel - Mrs. Robinson Already submitted to the thread by JohnnyForget on 1st November 2011 (Page 6). 4. Herb Alpert - This Guy's in Love With You Already submitted to the thread by mushymanrob on 13th November 2011 (Page 8). 5. The Lemon Pipers - Green Tambourine Psychedelia meets bubblegum pop. 6. Marvin Gaye - I Heard It Through the Grapevine Marvin Gaye recorded I Heard It Through the Grapevine in early 1967, but the song sat on the shelf for more than a year because Motown chief Berry Gordy was underwhelmed by it. However, when eventually released it topped the US charts for seven weeks and became Motown's most successful song of the decade. 7. The Rascals - People Got to Be Free This fine piece of blue-eyed Soul gave the Rascals (previously known as the Young Rascals) their third and final American Number One single. And here’s the full list of Number One singles in the USA during that year (in chronological order):- The Beatles - Hello Goodbye (6 January 1968 - 2 weeks at no. 1) John Fred and his Playboy Band - Judy In Disguise (20 January 1968 - 2 weeks) The Lemon Pipers - Green Tambourine (3 February 1968 - 1 week) Paul Mauriat - Love Is Blue (10 February 1968 - 5 weeks) Otis Redding - (Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay (16 March 1968 - 4 weeks) Bobby Goldsboro - Honey (13 April 1968 - 5 weeks) Archie Bell and the Drells - Tighten Up (18 May 1968 - 2 weeks) Simon and Garfunkel - Mrs. Robinson (1 June 1968 - 3 weeks) Herb Alpert - This Guy's in Love With You (22 June 1968 - 4 weeks) Hugh Masekela - Grazing in the Grass (20 July 1968 - 2 weeks) The Doors - Hello I Love You (3 August 1968 - 2 weeks) The Rascals - People Got to Be Free (17 August 1968 - 5 weeks) Jeannie C. Riley - Harper Valley PTA (21 September 1968 - 1 week) The Beatles - Hey Jude (28 September 1968 - 9 weeks) Diana Ross and the Supremes - Love Child (30 November 1968 - 2 weeks) Marvin Gaye - I Heard It Through the Grapevine (14 December 1968 - 7 weeks) |

A Beatles post.
Ideally, I should have made this post to the Beatles Appreciation thread, which is in dire need of a bump as it's currently languishing at the bottom of Page 2 of the Music Appreciation sub-forum. The thing is that most people are completely oblivious of the Music Appreciation sub-forum and are totally unaware that a Beatles Appreciation thread even exists. I have therefore decided to make this post to this thread which, being on the main forum, is likely to get a larger audience. Here are some very good Beatles songs, all written by George Harrison:- The Beatles - Don't Bother Me (1963) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uGxvhAiOt-A The Beatles - I Need You (1965) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zO8KUfGihyM The Beatles - If I Needed Someone (1965) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lCNqHIKJ4wk The Beatles - Piggies (1968) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sXdKlpBOvs0 The Beatles - Long Long Long (1968) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qkmrjrfitBo The Beatles - Here Comes the Sun (1969) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U6tV11acSRk The Beatles - Something (1969) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xzkhOmKVW08 |

Right on both counts, Teresa. Otis recorded it 2 days before his death in December 1967 and it was released early in 1968. A great record.

It's a sad case when I mainly have to rely on the old rock dinosaurs like Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen, Brian Wilson, Bob Dylan, Paul Simon etc. When it comes to new album releases, and there are fewer and fewer of them around each passing year.
God knows how Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry and Little Richard are still around and touring(!) Still there are some good "newish" band around if you look, Wilco, Fleet Foxes, Foo Fighters, Radiohead, even Gorillaz (although not in the same league as Blur for me, sorry Damon ) etc.Oh and speaking of Brian Wilson, I am so excited for the BEACH BOYS REUNION this year!!!!! New tour and album!!! ![]() ![]()

The Rolling Stones - Honky Tonk Women Already submitted to the thread by Vabosity on 27th October 2011 (Page 5). 2. Henry Mancini - Love Theme From Romeo And Juliet Superb cover version of Nino Rota’s beautiful piece of music first heard in Franco Zeffirelli’s 1968 film adaption of a famous play by Shakespeare. 3. The Beatles with Billy Preston - Get Back Already submitted to the thread by Vabosity on 27th October 2011 (Page 5). 4. The Fifth Dimension - Wedding Bell Blues Brilliant version of a brilliant song written by the brilliant Laura Nyro. 5. The Fifth Dimension - Aquarius / Let The Sunshine In Already submitted to the thread by Multimedia81 on 10th December 2011 (Page 11). 6. Steam - Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye The superb original version of a song famously mutilated in the eighties by Bananarama. 7. Tommy James and the Shondells - Crimson And Clover The band’s second and final American Number One single. This is the abridged single version. For the full five and half minutes album version please see my post dated 19th November 2010 on Page 24 of the Rare 60’s Classics thread. 8. The Beatles - Something Already submitted to the thread by JohnnyForget on 20th January 2012 (Page 14). 9. The Beatles - Come Together The best Beatles nonsense song since I Am The Walrus imho. At least I think Come Together is a nonsense song, unless those bizarre lyrics have a very profound, hidden meaning that I’m completely unaware of. And here’s the full list of Number One singles in the USA during that year (in chronological order):- Marvin Gaye - I Heard It Through The Grapevine (14 December 1968 - 7 weeks) Tommy James and the Shondells - Crimson And Clover (1 February 1969 - 2 weeks) Sly and the Family Stone - Everyday People (15 February 1969 - 4 weeks) Tommy Roe - Dizzy (15 March 1969 - 4 weeks) The Fifth Dimension - Aquarius / Let The Sunshine In (12 April 1969 - 6 weeks) The Beatles with Billy Preston - Get Back (24 May 1969 - 5 weeks) Henry Mancini - Love Theme From Romeo And Juliet (28 June 1969 - 2 weeks) Zager and Evans - In the Year 2525 (Exordium and Terminus) (12 July 1969 - 6 weeks) The Rolling Stones - Honky Tonk Women (23 August 1969 - 4 weeks) The Archies - Sugar, Sugar (20 September 1969 - 4 weeks) The Temptations - I Can't Get Next To You (18 October 1969 - 2 weeks) Elvis Presley - Suspicious Minds (1 November 1969 - 1 week) The Fifth Dimension - Wedding Bell Blues (8 November 1969 - 3 weeks) The Beatles - Come Together / Something (29 November 1969 - 1 week) Steam - Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye (6 December 1969 - 2 weeks) Peter, Paul and Mary - Leaving On A Jet Plane (20 December 1969 - 1 week) Diana Ross and the Supremes - Someday We'll Be Together (27 December 1969 - 1 week) |

6. Steam - Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye
The superb original version of a song famously mutilated in the eighties by Bananarama. Interesting, though. It didn't make the British charts until 1970, so I always think of it as a seventies track, when it's quite evidently a sixties one. This has given me an idea. The following great tracks were all hits in Britain in early 1970, implying they were all recorded in 1969, which means I ain't really breaking any rules by posting them to a sixties thread:- Badfinger - Come And Get It http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DY4BjGFzwu0 Boris Gardiner - Elizabethan Reggae http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EZYCfkWLWZI Shocking Blue - Venus http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=auoAr...eature=related Canned Heat - Let's Work Together http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IsRUi...eature=related Jethro Tull - The Witch's Promise http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=usL3iL03ldg John Lennon - Instant Karma http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F3qvo...eature=related Simon And Garfunkel - Bridge Over Troubled Water http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H_a46WJ1viA Norman Greenbaum - Spirit In The Sky http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OTu3M6wsaiU The Band - Rag Mama Rag http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHy_XeBMagU |

The nifty guitar work on this track is from a guy called Dave Edmunds, who would go on to achieve a fair amount of success in the following decade with a very different type of music:- Love Sculpture - Sabre Dance http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=skrW7...eature=related |

For lovers of sixties music there are some interesting looking documentaries on BBC-4 this evening:-
9pm: "How The Brits Rocked America" A look at how the British invasion led by the Beatles conquered the US in the 1960s. 10pm: "The Beatles: The First US Visit" The story of two weeks in 1964, when Beatlemania ignited in America. From airport to hotel to TV studio, the Maysles brothers filmed the Beatles on tour, off guard and off duty. 11.10pm: "Vox Pop: The British Beat Boom" Iain Lee recounts how a small company in Dartford manufacturing Vox amplifiers came to define the sound of the 60s. Featuring contributions from Brian May and Bruce Welch. 11.40pm: "The Electric Proms" Paul McCartney performs a selection of old Beatles hits plus newer solo songs at the Roundhouse in London. |

Here are my favourite Number One singles in the USA during the year 1965 (in order of preference):-
1. The Righteous Brothers - You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin' Already submitted to the thread by Vabosity on 12th October 2011 (Page 3). 2. The McCoys - Hang On Sloopy Already submitted to the thread by JohnnyForget on 4th November 2011 (Page 6). 3. The Temptations - My Girl This Motown classic was not a hit in the UK until re-released in 1992. 4. The Rolling Stones - (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction The Rolling Stones had eight American Number One singles (five in the sixties and three in the seventies), of which this was their first. 5. Herman's Hermits - Mrs. Brown, You've Got A Lovely Daughter Very quaint and very English, which is probably why it appealed to the Americans so much. 6. The Beatles - Eight Days A Week Already submitted to the thread by Vabosity on 30th October 2011 (Page 5). 7. The Byrds - Mr. Tambourine Man Dylan's original and the Byrds' chart topping cover are very different. The latter is very much an abridged version of the song and its famous intro was written by Roger McGuinn and not Bob Dylan, so is not found on the original. I like both versions. When I'm in the mood for superior mid-sixties pop I'll listen to the version by the Byrds and when I'm in the mood for some lyrical wizardry I'll listen to the original. Currently, I'm in the mood for superior mid-sixties pop. 8. Sonny and Cher - I Got You Babe There have been times when I’ve tended to judge Cher rather harshly because of (what I consider to be) the dross she released in the eighties and nineties, but back in the mid-sixties she did record (what I consider to be) some wonderful tracks with and without her then husband. And here’s the full list of Number One singles in the USA during that year (in chronological order):- The Supremes - Come See About Me (16 January 1965 - 1 week at no. 1) Petula Clark - Downtown (23 January 1965 - 2 weeks) The Righteous Brothers - You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin' (6 February 1965 - 2 weeks) Gary Lewis and the Playboys - This Diamond Ring (20 February 1965 - 2 weeks) The Temptations - My Girl (6 March 1965 - 1 week) The Beatles - Eight Days A Week (13 March 1965 - 2 weeks) The Supremes - Stop! In the Name Of Love (27 March 1965 - 2 weeks) Freddie and the Dreamers - I'm Telling You Now (10 April 1965 - 2 weeks) Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders - Game Of Love (24 April 1965 - 1 week) Herman's Hermits - Mrs. Brown, You've Got A Lovely Daughter (1 May 1965 - 3 weeks) The Beatles - Ticket To Ride (22 May 1965 - 1 week) The Beach Boys - Help Me, Rhonda (29 May 1965 - 2 weeks) The Supremes - Back In My Arms Again (12 June 1965 - 1 week) The Four Tops - I Can't Help Myself (19 June 1965 - 1 week) The Byrds - Mr. Tambourine Man (26 June 1965 - 1 week) The Four Tops - I Can't Help Myself (3 July 1965 - 1 week) The Rolling Stones - (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction (10 July 1965 - 4 weeks) Herman's Hermits - I'm Henry VIII, I Am (7 August 1965 - 1 week) Sonny and Cher - I Got You Babe (14 August 1965 - 3 weeks) The Beatles - Help! (4 September 1965 - 3 weeks) Barry McGuire - Eve Of Destruction (25 September 1965 - 1 week) The McCoys - Hang On Sloopy (2 October 1965 - 1 week) The Beatles – Yesterday (9 October 1965 - 4 weeks) The Rolling Stones - Get Off Of My Cloud (6 November 1965 - 2 weeks) The Supremes - I Hear A Symphony (20 November 1965 - 2 weeks) The Byrds - Turn! Turn! Turn! (4 December 1965 - 3 weeks) The Dave Clark Five - Over And Over (25 December 1965 - 1 week) ![]() http://nohardchords.wordpress.com/ |

There's only one way to follow great tracks from 1966 ^^ and that's with some great tracks from 1967:-
Buffalo Springfield - For What It's Worth (1967) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gp5JC...eature=related Arthur Conley - Sweet Soul Music (1967) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DYIqxDfg2bQ Tommy James And The Shondells - I Think We're Alone Now (1967) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KegtnzBJuyY Jefferson Airplane - Somebody To Love (1967) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Jj3wZVc7nw Traffic - Hole In My Shoe (1967) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a77yHpjdUtU The Mamas And The Papas - Creeque Alley (1967) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZLC2bf4jfPE The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Purple Haze (1967) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W55Smyyzs58 The Cowsills - The Rain The Park And Other Things (1967) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8q6fLhnwEKk The Monkees - Pleasant Valley Sunday (1967) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sUzs5dlLrm0 |

Waterloo Sunset - The Kinks
Could have chosen Days or Autumn Almanac. Quote:
2. The Kinks - You Really Got Me
A fantastic track by a fantastic band. However, it is the track that many claim is the blueprint for what later became Heavy Metal , so it’s certainly got a lot to answer for! ![]() Quote:
4. The Kinks - Sunny Afternoon
Their third and final UK Number One single. Only three Number One singles, eh? Imho this great band should have had at least half a dozen! Then again, I suppose that three Number One singles is not so bad really; it’s three more than The Who ever achieved. Quote:
The Kinks - Victoria (1969)
I would imagine that a song glorifying Great Britain’s imperial past was considered very uncool in the late sixties, which may explain why this magnificent track was only a minor hit single. Quote:
9 kinks - see my freinds
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S2Al7u0cKRk The Doors denied borrowing the riff from this classic for "Hello I Love You", but there is a definite similarity:- All Day And All Of The Night (1964) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F4DV-5d6a5g This tremendous track has already been on the thread, but the clip used has been removed from Youtube, so here's another clip:- Tired Of Waiting For You (1965) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMcA-HGVo6o An all but forgotten gem:- Set Me Free (1965) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ccvPWTRDcu8 Another all but forgotten gem:- Till The End Of The Day (1965) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BIc-RnqjwWA I tend to sing this song to myself quite a lot, but change the lyrics to "Where Has All The Good Music Gone?", a question many people seem to be asking:- Where Have All The Good Times Gone? (1965) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0v34aT2jQb0 It was 1966, the height of Swinging London, and Ray Davies decided to mock those who were making it swing:- Dedicated Follower Of Fashion (1966) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TQAR-nx4w88 Famously covered by the Jam, but the original is much better (imo):- David Watts (1967) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hd9SboFlWyc |

God knows how Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry and Little Richard are still around and touring(!)
, so it’s certainly got a lot to answer for!
