I’ve noticed that quite a few of my favourite American Number Ones of the sixties are tracks that have already featured on the thread, so instead of supplying Youtube clips for my five favourites from each year I’ll be listing all my favourites but only supplying Youtube clips for five that are new to thread. If you look below you’ll see what I’m getting at.”
This is my tenth and final post devoted to my favourite American Number One singles from each year of the sixties. I previously did ten similar posts devoted to my favourite UK Number One singles from each year of the sixties, so I now need to put on my thinking cap and come up with some themes for future posts. I suppose I don’t really need to make posts with themes, I could just make them featuring random tracks that I like ... no, too boring!
In the meantime ...
Here are my favourite Number One singles in the USA during the year 1969 (in order of preference):-
1.. The Rolling Stones - Honky Tonk Women
Already submitted to the thread by
Vabosity on 27th October 2011 (Page 5).
2.
Henry Mancini - Love Theme From Romeo And Juliet
Superb cover version of Nino Rota’s beautiful piece of music first heard in Franco Zeffirelli’s 1968 film adaption of a famous play by Shakespeare.
3. The Beatles with Billy Preston - Get Back
Already submitted to the thread by
Vabosity on 27th October 2011 (Page 5).
4.
The Fifth Dimension - Wedding Bell Blues
Brilliant version of a brilliant song written by the brilliant Laura Nyro.
5. The Fifth Dimension - Aquarius / Let The Sunshine In
Already submitted to the thread by
Multimedia81 on 10th December 2011 (Page 11).
6.
Steam - Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye
The superb original version of a song famously mutilated in the eighties by Bananarama.
7.
Tommy James and the Shondells - Crimson And Clover
The band’s second and final American Number One single. This is the abridged single version. For the full five and half minutes album version please see my post dated 19th November 2010 on Page 24 of the
Rare 60’s Classics thread.
8. The Beatles - Something
Already submitted to the thread by
JohnnyForget on 20th January 2012 (Page 14).
9.
The Beatles - Come Together
The best Beatles nonsense song since
I Am The Walrus imho. At least I think
Come Together is a nonsense song, unless those bizarre lyrics have a very profound, hidden meaning that I’m completely unaware of.
