I’ve decided to devote my first few posts to this thread to my favourite UK Number One singles from each year of the sixties.
Here are my five favourite UK Number One singles from the year 1962 (in order of preference):-

1. The Shadows - Wonderful Land
An absolute gem from (with all due respect to the Ventures) the kings of early-sixties guitar instrumentals. This single stayed at Number One in the UK for more weeks than any other single during the whole of the sixties (a good one for your pop quiz, Rob ).

2. The Tornados - Telstar
This classic Joe Meek production would very soon afterwards repeat its UK success in the USA. So the Tornadoes (and NOT the Beatles) were the first British group to top the American singles chart (another good one for your pop quiz, Rob ).

3. B. Bumble and the Stingers - Nut Rocker
This terrific rock ‘n’ roll version of a fine old Tschaikovsky tune means that my top three UK Number One singles of 1962 are all instrumentals.

4. Cliff Richard and the Shadows - The Young Ones
Guilty pleasure.

5.Frank Ifield - I Remember You
Another guilty pleasure.

And here’s the full list of UK Number One singles from that year:-

Cliff Richard and the Shadows -The Young Ones (11 January 1962 - 6 weeks at no. 1)

Elvis Presley - Rock-A-Hula Baby / Can't Help Falling in Love (22 February 1962 - 4 weeks)

The Shadows - Wonderful Land (22 March 1962 - 8 weeks)

B. Bumble and the Stingers - Nut Rocker (17 May 1962 - 1 week)

Elvis Presley - Good Luck Charm (24 May 1962 - 5 weeks)

Mike Sarne with Wendy Richard - Come Outside (28 June 1962 - 2 weeks)

Ray Charles - I Can't Stop Loving You (12 July 1962 - 2 weeks)

Frank Ifield - I Remember You (26 July 1962 - 7 weeks)

Elvis Presley - She's Not You (13 September 1962 - 3 weeks)

The Tornados - Telstar (4 October 1962 - 5 weeks)

Frank Ifield - Lovesick Blues (8 November 1962 - 5 weeks)

Elvis Presley - Return To Sender (13 December 1962 - 3 weeks)

thanks vabosity..........that's terrific

I remember when Helen Shapiro burst on the scene........I suppose she was portrayed as the English Brenda Lee and she got a lot of coverage as the girl who walked out of the classroom and to the top of the Hit Parade..........

Here's a really great song of hers as mentionned by Vab

Just like Brenda, she had a fantastic voice for a little girl............

You Don't Know.........

brenda was only about 4 foot 10..............but she had the voice of a sargeant-major...........

After such a promising start this thread seems to have stalled. I find this a bit baffling, because there was so much fantastic non-rare (for want of a better term) music around in the sixties and there are a fair number of sixties music fans on the forum (who may not know the "rare" stuff but certainly know and love the popular stuff) that I thought the thread would run and run.

Its definitely time to bump the thread.

Here are half a dozen of my favourite tracks from the years 1962 to 1965:-

Chris Montez - Let’s Dance (1962)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WiE_3...eature=related

The Swinging Blue Jeans - Hippy Hippy Shake (1963)

Dionne Warwick - Walk On By (1964)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kvZFznCn6cc

Manfred Mann - 5-4-3-2-1 (1964)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZxDJ6_v3Tlo

The Kingsmen - Louie Louie (1964)

Them - Baby Please Don’t Go (1965)

Van Morrison in that 'Them' video............

I never liked Dave Dee..........there was that awful film, Catch Me If You Can...............and I always thought he hogged the limelight too much for a drummer..........

Talking of drummers.........is this the most famous 'pop' drummer of the early 60s.........

The Honeycombs - Have I the right

I think you're confusing Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick and Titch with The Dave Clark Five.

Ringo was probably the most famous pop drummer of the early sixties, but Honey Lantree (of the Honeycombs) was certainly prettier! "Have I The Right" is a fantastic pop record.

One of the most beautiful songs i've ever heard, I'm wondering whether or not to include this song in the thread since this version was released in 1971. But the song was conceived and part of this song was done in 1966/67. It was originally going to be on their album "SMiLE" (It's being finally released in October 31st this year after 43 years.) In my opinion this song beats almost every Beatles song ever made and best conveys Brian Wilson's genius. (and i'm a massive Beatles fan!)

I get chills at 3:03 until the end of the song.

I loved that song....

For me as a child my lasting memories of the 60s were long hot summers with the Seekers and the adorable Judith on the radio. As a young boy I was a little bit in love with Judith.

So two by them...

Gamechangers............

You know when you're a teenager and everything is extreme...........you're madly in love with that girl you met 2 minutes ago, society needs to be destroyed and started again, your team gets knocked out in the 3rd round of the cup and you might as well be dead...............

Well..........sometimes a song comes along and you think the world can never be the same again...........

Here's the first of my gamechangers from the 60s

The Rolling Stones - Jumpin Jack Flash

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e9XKVTNs1g4

I'll try and remember some more as we go along..........

Yeah.........it's great innit ?..........I loved the Four Tops but for me that song was itself 'topped' when Gloria Gaynor had her mix of Never Can Say Goodbye/Reach Out in the 70s

Four Tops classics.........

That's something else that can be "appreciated" about the sixties, they were a lot stricter when it came to good grammar!
