I must congratulate Multimedia81 on his Top 100. I’m not too keen on a few of the tracks, but I like the overwhelming majority a great deal.

I’m rather fond of making lists myself and below I have listed my Top Thirty tracks of the sixties. If I were to post my Top Thirty sixties tracks again in, say, a month’s time the list will more than likely look very different to the one below. Well, that decade had so much amazing music and I’m very fickle by nature anyway.

1. I Put A Spell On You - Nina Simone (1964)
2. House Of The Rising Sun - The Animals (1964)
3. Waterloo Sunset - The Kinks (1967)
4. Light My Fire - The Doors (1967)
5. Purple Haze - The Jimi Hendrix Experience (1967)
6. Louie Louie - The Kingsmen (1963)
7. Caroline No - The Beach Boys (1966)
8. Moon River - Danny Williams (1961)
9. Gimme Shelter - The Rolling Stones (1969)
10. Get Together - The Youngbloods (1967)
11. Alone Again Or - Love (1967)
12. I’m Gonne Be Stong - Gene Pitney (1964)
13. All Along The Watchtower - The Jimi Hendrix Experience (1968)
14. The Warmth of the Sun - The Beach Boys (1964)
15. I Am the Walrus - The Beatles (1967)
16. You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling - The Righteous Brothers (1965)

For anyone interested, "Telstar: The Joe Meek Story", a biopic of the legendary and tragic sixties producer, Joe Meek, who produced such classics as "Johnny Remember Me" by John Leyton, "Telstar" by the Tornadoes and "Have I The Right" by the Honeycombs, can be seen tonight on BBC-2 from 11.15pm,

Actually I must thank you for pointing out some lists of 60s songs. I may well have forgotten to include Love's Alone Again Or otherwise.

Needle in a Haystack could be my fave song to miss the UK top 40 of all-time. Ironically, Do It Again features a mention of California Girls.

Before deciding my top 100 songs of the 60s, I anticipated 1968 being my fave year. I think I had a soft spot for 1968 as my nos 1, 3 and 7 came from then. In practice, 1967 was the most represented year with no fewer than 22 entries! I guess the variety of music must have hit an all-time high then. Indeed, about 7 years ago Radio 2 did a survey of people's favourite year for music, and Simon Mayo broadcast the results one Bank Holiday, when 1967 was revealed as the public's most popular year for music.

About 1968, I reckon on deciding my fave 30 or 40 songs from that year one Bank Holiday next year.

Of all the examples of acts with at least 2 songs in my top 100, I particularly liked it when these were successive singles. The cases in point came from Cream, the Kinks, Loving Spoonful, the Rolling Stones, the Supremes, Traffic, the Turtles and the Yardbirds. More impressive was the Animals and the Beatles releasing 3 singles in a row that would make my top 100! The Beach Boys had a unique feat, of sending songs to my top 100 from 4 successive years.

1. I Put A Spell On You - Nina Simone (1964)”

A chance to hear what is currently my favourite track from the sixties, then a chance to compare it with two other very different versions of the same song.

Nina Simone - I Put A Spell On You (1964)
I'm not really a Nina Simone fan, most of what she recorded is not exactly my cup of tea, but this particular track is one of the best two and half minutes of music I have ever heard.

The Alan Price Set - I Put A Spell On You (1966)
This was a Top Ten hit single in the UK, and so is probably the best known version. Good track.

Creedence Clearwater Revival - I Put A Spell On You (1968)
This is fabulous. CCR are imho one of the all time great bands. Such a pity that nowadays they don't generally seem to be as appreciated as some of their contemporaries.

Screaming Jay Hawkins' wonderfully manic original version of I Put A Spell On You, which I like almost as much as Nina Simone's cover, was recorded in 1956 and so is not eligible for this thread, but if you like what you've just heard then I think it might be worth your while checking out that original version.

It's been a great week for sixties music related birthdays.

Last Monday Paul McCartney reached the grand old age of 70, a couple of days later Brian Wilson also reached the grand old age of 70, and yesterday Ray Davies reached the not so grand old age of 68.

A retrospective happy birthday to all three of you.

To celebrate these three songwriting geniuses here are half a dozen great tracks that have never been on the thread before, two each from the Beatles, the Beach Boys and the Kinks respectively:-

The Beatles - I'm Down (1965)

Well I don't think people being made redundant, people kipping on the streets, people who haven't got a pot to piss in would agree. In fact the Beatles when they were first starting out weren't singing All you need is Love - no they were singing I want money (that's what I want). The sentiment expressed in All you need is love can only come from someone who is doing very well thank you very much and doesn't have to worry about paying the bills. I still get goosebumps when I see the Our World clip though. Makes you proud to be British - even if the lyrics are bs.

More great tracks from the 60s:

I remember You

Can't include the Rolling Stones or the Beach Boys as their best were later imo.

Why don't they write songs like these anymore!!

The Tremeloes had a big hit with this one, but I prefer the songwriter's version:-

This song was a hit for P.P.Arnold in 1967 and for Rod Stewart in 1977, but here again is the songwriter's version:-

This was his last hit single until "Lady D'Arbanville" in 1970:-

I can't seem to find "Kitty", which is probably my favourite Cat Stevens track of the sixties, on Youtube, but hopefully it'll turn up one of these days.”

I see this thread has been moved from the main forum to the Music Appreciation sub-forum.

Even though this means that the thread is likely to stay on Page 1 of the sub-forum a lot longer than it usually did on Page 1 of the main forum, I'm still not convinced that this move is necessarily a good thing.

A lot more people view the main forum and are completely oblivious to the sub-forums, so I've got a feeling that the thread may lose a lot of viewers.

Here are four very good singles, each one very different from the other three, each one a top ten hit, and each one, surprisingly perhaps, making its first appearance on this thread.

This tremendous early sixties instrumental, which peaked at No. 8 in the charts, is as good as anything recorded back then by the Shadows or the Ventures (imo):-

The Ramrods - Riders In The Sky (1961)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gWTjjm-Gg3c

Chris Andrews wrote a number of hit songs for Sandie Shaw and Adam Faith, but decided to record what was perhaps his best song himself:-

Chris Andrews - Yesterday Man (1965)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oF4-0kwnubE

Here's the very popular title song from a very popular film of the day:-

Traffic - Here We Go Round The Mulberry Bush (1967)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IvGIf_Ivclc

Very few Gospel tracks crossed over and became pop hits, but here's one that did:-

The Edwin Hawkins Singers - Oh Happy Day (1969)
