In the first ten posts I made to this thread I submitted my Top Five UK Number One singles for each year of the sixties. A few weeks later I did something very similar with regard to my favourite U.S. Number One singles from each year of sixties.
I’ve now come up with a slight variation on this theme and from today will be submitting my Top Five UK Number Two singles for each year of the sixties. I’m referring to singles whose highest position in the UK charts was Number Two. Thus, any single that may have occupied that position after previously being at or subsequently getting to Number One will be ignored.”
Anyone with a good memory will remember that in my post reviewing the UK Number One singles of 1967 I was not too complimentary about that year's chart toppers. I have a somewhat more favourable opinion of the UK Number Two singles of 1967. While I would not hesitate to describe some of that year's UK Number Two singles as
real stinkers, my five favourites (shown below) are far more to my liking than my five favourite UK Number One singles of 1967 (please see Post #83 on Page 4 of the thread).
Here are my five favourite UK Number Two singles (i.e. highest position Number Two) from the year 1967 (in order of preference):-
1. The Kinks - Waterloo Sunset
This magnificent track is not only my favourite Number Two single of 1967 it is also my favourite Number Two single of all time.
2. The Beatles - I Am The Walrus (from The Magic Mystery Tour EP)
The Magical Mystery Tour was a critically panned TV film starring the Beatles. The film featured six new Beatles tracks, which was not really enough for an album, so the six were released on a double EP called, unsurprisingly,
The Magical Mystery Tour. Despite not being, strictly speaking, a single, this EP sold enough to get it to Number Two on the UK singles chart, which is the main criterion here.
I Am The Walrus is by far my favourite track on
The Magical Mystery Tour EP.
3. The Mamas and the Papas - Dedicated To The One I Love
The 1957 original by the Five Royales is excellent, the 1959 cover by the Shirelles is also excellent, but imho neither can hold a candle to this beautiful version by the Mamas and the Papas.
4. Traffic - Hole In My Shoe
A hugely enjoyable piece of nonsense, albeit not very typical of the groundbreaking music that Traffic were making at the time.
5. The Move - Night Of Fear
The Move’s debut single was this fine song written by Roy Wood and a certain Mr. Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (the main riff was derived from
The 1812 Overture).
And here’s the full list of UK Number Two singles (i.e. highest position Number Two) from that year:-
Donovan - Sunshine Superman (reaching no. 2 on 12th January 1967)
The Move - Night Of Fear (26th January 1967)
