The 5th Dimension are one of my favourite vocal groups of the late sixties. They are best known for the tracks "Aquarius / Let The Sun Shine In" and "Wedding Bell Blues" which you can find in the "Quotes" above, and "Up Up And Away" which you can find immediately below:-

The 5th Dimension - Up Up And Away (1967)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5akEgsZSfhg

Here's another version of the song, not as well known today as the one by the 5th Dimension, but a much bigger hit in Britain back in the sixties:-

The Johnny Mann Singers - Up Up And Away (1967)

In for a penny, in for a pound, here's the virtually unknown original version:-

Joan Baez has a beautiful voice, was one of the most popular artists of the sixties folk revival and has not appeared on the thread before, so here are four of her best known tracks:-

Many quite talented British pop singers saw their charts careers come to a premature end when the Beatles came along and turned the whole British pop scene on its head.

One of those singers was a guy called Jimmy Justice. Here are his two very good top ten singles:-

Jimmy Justice - When My Little Girl Is Smiling (1962)

The thread is once again on the lower half of the page, and we can't have that, can we? So time to bump it yet again, this time with four mid sixties hits that have not appeared on the thread before.

Let's start start with this good fun cover version of a vintage Bing Crosby song:-

Big Dee Irwin and Little Eva - Swingin' On A Star (1963)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FVPVN8mHtD4

Next, here's the fifth and final top ten hit by the oldest of the three Sarstedt brothers:-

Eden Kane - Boys Cry (1964)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xiL06JcBHxI

I like "I Got You Babe", but this is my favourite track by Mr. and Mrs. Bono:-

Sonny and Cher - Baby Don't Go (1965)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yPvsM1YPf5M

Finally, here's Chris Montez with a track that's very different from his rock'n'roll classic "Lets Dance", but just as successful, and just as good in its own way:-

Chris Montez - The More I See You (1966)

Donovan's music is gorgeous for me, enjoying him lots right now.

Van Dyke Parks is class.

The Moody Blues with "In Search of The Lost Chord".

Harry Nilsson, Nico, Simon & Garfunkel, Glen Campbell, The Incredible String Band, The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown, Family, Pearls Before Swine, Free, Dr John, Frank Zappa, The Mandrake Memorial, Dr. Strangely Strange, King Crimson, Fairport Convention, The End, Randy Newman, Pretty Things, The Soft Machine.....

Here are the hit versions of four Jagger and Richards songs:-

Gene Pitney - That Girl Belongs To Yesterday (1964)

Marianne Faithfull - As Tears Go By (1965)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1az3STKt3ac

Chris Farlowe - Out Of Time (1966)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpDjbul0WyE

It's interesting to compare the above tracks with the Stones' own very different versions of the songs:-

The Rolling Stones - That Girl Belongs To Yesterday (1963)

I should have made this post on Tuesday, but I wasn't aware of this information then. Anyway, better late than never.

The great Jimi Hendrix was born on 27th November 1942, which means that, had he lived, it would have been his 70th birthday two days ago.

Here are four classic Hendrix tracks:-

P.J. Proby was one of the great characters of the sixties music scene. We've already two of his hits on the thread, let's have some more.

Starting with his most successful single:-

P.J. Proby - Hold Me (1964)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2w5AQX2WrB4

Here's a very good track that just scraped into the top twenty:-

P.J. Proby - Let The Water Run Down (1965)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=05AIlhFn6Vc

Next, a great ballad that missed the top ten by a whisker:-

P.J. Proby - I Apologise (1965)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bRNy61Zy3Mc

Finally, a single that should have gone top five (imo), but only peaked at no.30 in the charts:-

Jazz legend, Dave Brubeck, died yesterday aged 91. Not only was Brubeck's style of Jazz unique and innovative it was also surprisingly commercial with three of his singles making the top forty.

We've already had his biggest hit, the fantastic "Take Five" on the thread (see above), so here are the other two:-

All four of these tracks were big-ish hits and yet they wouldn't have been out of place on the "Rare 60's Classics" thread, so little known are they today. Like them all.

Thanks for the post, Mushymanrob. After half a dozen consecutive posts by me it was good to see someone else post for a change. I was beginning to think that this thread had been renamed the "JohnnyForget Is The Only One Who Appreciates Sixties Music" thread!

Vabosity returns once again to the 1960’s Appreciation Thread after yet another long absence, and once again not before time.

In the first ten posts I made to this thread I submitted my Top Five UK Number One singles for each year of the sixties.

A few weeks later I submitted my Top Five U.S. Number One singles for each year of the sixties.

Then from late August to early October 2012 I submitted my Top Five UK Number Two singles for each year of the sixties.

The next logical step is to submit my Top Five U.S. Number Two singles for each year of the sixties, and that's exactly what I am going to do, starting today.

Here are my five favourite U.S. Number Two singles (i.e. highest position Number Two) from the year 1960 (in order of preference):-

1. The Ventures - Walk Don’t Run
Excellent instrumental by the American equivalent of the Shadows.

2. Sam Cooke - Chain Gang
I love everything Sam Cooke ever recorded, so it’s no real surprise that this gem would make my top five.

3. The Brothers Four - Greenfields
Beautiful song by one of the leading folk groups of the day.

4. Roy Orbison - Only The Lonely
Not one of my favourites by the Big “O”, but certainly worthy of inclusion in my top five.

5. Johnny Tillotson - Poetry In Motion
The quintessential early sixties pop song; rather corny, but very difficult to dislike.

And here’s the full list of UK Number Two singles (i.e. highest position Number Two) from that year:-

Jim Reeves - He’ll Have To Go (reaching no. 2 on 7th March 1960)

Jimmy Jones - Handy Man (29th February 1960)

Bobby Rydell - Wild One (28th March 1960)

Paul Anka - Puppy Love (4th April 1960)

The Brothers Four - Greenfields (18th April 1960)

Roy Orbison - Only The Lonely (25th July 1960)

The Ventures - Walk Don’t Run (29th August 1960)

Sam Cooke - Chain Gang (3rd October 1960)

Johnny Tillotson - Poetry In Motion (14th November 1960)

Floyd Cramer - Last Date (28th November 1960)

For a list of all the U.S. Number One singles of the year 1960, and my Top Five from that list, please see Post #537 on Page 22 of the thread.

Here are my five favourite U.S. Number Two singles (i.e. highest position Number Two) from the year 1961 (in order of preference):-

1. Roy Orbison - Crying
One of Roy’s finest songs.

2. Bobby Vee - Run To Him
For an extremely brief period very early in Bobby Vee’s career the piano player in his backing band was a then unknown Bob Dylan. For more information please click here.

3. The Miracles - Shop Around
Motown’s first ever hit single.

4. Shep and the Limelites - Daddy’s Home
Classic doo-wop track. A cover version by Cliff Richard was one of his biggest UK hits of the eighties.

5. The Dovells - Bristol Stomp
Afaic you can never have too much doo-wop, so the previous slow doo-wop track is followed by this somewhat more up tempo one.

And here’s the full list of U.S. Number Two singles (i.e. highest position Number Two) from that year:-

Ferrante and Teicher - Exodus (reaching no. 2 on 23rd January 1961)

The Miracles - Shop Around (20th February 1961)

Jorgan Ingmann - Apache (3rd April 1961)

Shep and the Limelites - Daddy’s Home (29th May 1961)

Dee Clark - Raindrops (26th June 1961)

Brook Benton - The Boll Weevil Song (10th July 1961)

Chris Kenner - I Like It Like That (31st July 1961)

Roy Orbison - Crying (9th October 1961)

Dick and Deedee - Mountains High (25th September 1961)

The Dovells - Bristol Stomp (23rd October 1961)

Bobby Vee - Run To Him (25th December 1961)

Happy Boxing Day.

Here are my five favourite U.S. Number Two singles (i.e. highest position Number Two) from the year 1962 (in order of preference):-

1. Dion - The Wanderer
One of the great Rock ‘n’ Roll songs of the early sixties. Classic track.

2. Kenny Ball and his Jazzmen - Midnight In Moscow
The official (for want of a better term) British Invasion of the American charts began in 1964. However, two years earlier, there was what you might call a mini invasion, when three superb British instrumental singles sold by the bucket load over there (Stranger On The Shore by Acker Bilk and Telstar by the Tornados both topped the U.S. singles chart in 1962, and the brilliant Midnight In Moscow by Kenny Ball and his Jazzmen failed by just a whisker to do the same).

3. Chubby Checker - Limbo Rock
How low can you go? Not one of Mr. Checker’s best remembered tracks, but imho one of his finest.

4. Ray Charles - You Don’t Know Me
Ray Charles (one of the true greats of Rhythm ‘n’ Blues and one of the pioneers of Soul) and Country music seem an unlikely combination, but how well the two went together!

5. Dee Dee Sharp - Mashed Potato Time
I have a real fondness for this type of early sixties dance track.

And here’s the full list of U.S. Number Two singles (i.e. highest position Number Two) from that year:-

Elvis Presley - Can’t Help Falling In Love (reaching no. 2 on 3rd February 1962)

Dion - The Wanderer (24th February 1962)

Kenny Ball and his Jazzmen - Midnight In Moscow (17th March 1962)

Dee Dee Sharp - Mashed Potato Time (5th May 1962)

The Orlons - Wah Watusi (21st July 1962)

Ray Charles - You Don’t Know Me (8th September 1962)

Nat King Cole - Ramblin’ Rose (22nd September 1962)

Gene Pitney - Only Love Can Break A Heart (3rd November 1962)

Elvis Presley - Return To Sender (17th November 1962)

Chubby Checker - Limbo Rock (22nd December 1962)
