Great thread and some great videos on show here so thanks for the trip down memory lane.

Any Dave Dee, Dozy Beaky Mick and Titch fans?
I enjoy their singles. My favourite is this one from 1968.

A few more hits from '68 I love:

Cupid's Inspiration - Yesterday Has Gone

The Herd - I Don't Want Our Lovin' To Die

The Honeybus - I Can't Let Maggie Go

The Casuals - Jesamine

The Equals - Baby Come Back

True. But in theory it should also be '60s
Strangely enough my wife and I had a discussion about that leading apostrophe the other day...

We know how to make the most of the good weather in our house!

I’ve decided to devote my first few posts to this thread to my favourite UK Number One singles from each year of the sixties.
Here are my five favourite UK Number One singles from the year 1963 (in order of preference):-

1. Gerry and the Pacemakers - You'll Never Walk Alone
I can’t stand Gerry’s two other Number One singles of 1963, but I love this one. My favourite version of my favourite Rodgers and Hammerstein song.

2. Cliff Richard - The Next Time
My favourite Cliff Richard track of the sixties. Lovely song.

3. Jet Harris and Tony Meehan - Diamonds
Two ex-Shadows with an instrumental as good as anything they ever recorded with their former group.

4. Billy J. Kramer and the Dakotas - Bad to Me
A Lennon and McCartney song (never recorded by the Beatles themselves) that I actually prefer to all three of the Number One singles the Beatles had during 1963.

5. The Beatles - I Want To Hold Your Hand
The final Number One single of 1963, a year which was one of the most significant in British pop music history. At the start of 1963 Cliff Richard and the Shadows were absolutely massive, more popular than they’d ever been, and their dominant position at the helm of British pop music looked almost unassailable. However, by the end of 1963. a bunch of moptops who had seemingly emerged from nowhere (well, Liverpool actually) had replaced the Shadows as the UK’s most popular musical group, had replaced Cliff as the UK’s most popular musical act and were now about to take America (and the World) by storm.

And here’s the full list of UK Number One singles from that year:-

Cliff Richard and the Shadows - The Next Time / Bachelor Boy (3 January 1963 - 3 weeks at no. 1)

The Shadows - Dance On! (24 January 1963 - 1 week)

Jet Harris and Tony Meehan - Diamonds (31 January 1963 - 3 weeks)

Frank Ifield - The Wayward Wind (21 February 1963 - 3 weeks)

Cliff Richard and the Shadows - Summer Holiday (14 March 1963 - 2 weeks)

The Shadows - Foot Tapper (28 March 1963 - 1 week)

Cliff Richard and the Shadows - Summer Holiday (4 April 1963 - 1 week)

Gerry and the Pacemakers - How Do You Do It? (11 April 1963 - 3 weeks)

The Beatles - From Me To You (2 May 1963 - 7 weeks)

Gerry and the Pacemakers - I Like It (20 June 1963 - 4 weeks)

Frank Ifield - Confessin' (18 July 1963 - 2 weeks)

Elvis Presley - (You're the) Devil In Disguise (1 August 1963 - 1week)

The Searchers - Sweets For My Sweet (8 August 1963 - 2 weeks)

Billy J. Kramer and the Dakotas - Bad to Me (22 August 1963 - 3 weeks)

The Beatles - She Loves You (12 September 1963 - 4 weeks)

Brian Poole and the Tremeloes - Do You Love Me (10 October 1963 - 3 weeks)

Gerry and the Pacemakers - You'll Never Walk Alone (31 October 1963 - 4 weeks)

The Beatles - She Loves You (28 November 1963 - 2 weeks)

The Beatles - I Want To Hold Your Hand (12 December 1963 - 5 weeks)

I've always enjoyed music/songs that stand out against the general flow of the era as many of the Seekers songs did... possibly none more so than this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xfYTEiFIZik

... Although the Tommy Makem version is probably my favourite http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7A4NEma5HcM

Oh, and do listen to the Liar http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7A4NEma5HcM just brilliant!.

Was 'From Me to You' the beatles first number one ?

I've always thought Please Please Me was the first number one although it was the second single. Love Me Do being the first single which maybe re-entered the charts after Please please Me hit number one ?

Also interesting from that 1963 list that US artists were only top for one week

Bet that didn't happen very often !

I believe that there were four different charts in the early sixties (Melody Maker, NME and two others). "Please Please Me" got to no. 1 on two of those charts and to no. 2 on the remaining two. "From Me To You" got to no. 1 on all four.

Some sort of algorithm (now there's a good word!) has been introduced since and is used on all four charts to retrospectively determine the definitive chart (i.e. the one you see on websites like Wikipedia and Everyhit.com), and that algorithm doesn't favour "Please Please Me", because it is has it peaking at no. 2, meaning that "From Me To You" is now generally accepted as being the Beatles' first ever no. 1 single.

Please Please Me was one of very few Beatles songs I actually liked...

I love music from the entire decade, but if I was asked to pick my favourite year of the sixties for music I would have to say 1966.

So here are some of my favourite tracks from my favourite year:-

Dusty Springfield - You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me (1966)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i_AtGUyu64s

The Who - Substitute (1966)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eswQl-hcvU0

The Byrds - Eight Miles High (1966)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WH6UnvSlahc

The Mamas and the Papas - California Dreaming (1966)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V0UcQDUR-fU

Ike and Tina Turner - River Deep Mountain High (1966)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SRSrp...eature=related

Simon and Garfunkel - Homeward Bound (1966)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7z9wd...eature=related

The Lovin’ Spoonful - Daydream (1966)

I’ve decided to devote my first few posts to this thread to my favourite UK Number One singles from each year of the sixties.
Here, in order of preference, are my five favourite UK Number One singles from the year 1964 (with apologies for including any track that may have previously featured in the thread):-

1. The Animals - House of the Rising Sun
Stunning.

2. The Kinks - You Really Got Me
A fantastic track by a fantastic band. However, it is the track that many claim is the blueprint for what later became Heavy Metal , so it’s certainly got a lot to answer for!

3. The Rolling Stones - It's All Over Now
The first chart-topping single by the Stones was not a Mick and Keith original, but a cover version of a song written by Bobby and Shirley Womack and originally recorded by the Valentinos. I personally prefer the Stones’ version, but if you want to compare them, you’ll find the Valentinos’ version featured in my post dated 22-10-2010 on Page 21 of the Rare 60's Classics thread

4. The Rolling Stones - Little Red Rooster
As far as I am aware this is the only straight blues to ever top the UK singles chart. A very different, but just as excellent version by the great Sam Cooke is also worth a listen, and you’ll find it featured in my post dated 28-01-2011 on Page 30 of the Rare 60's Classics thread.

5. Roy Orbison - It's Over
Roy Orbison had two UK Number One singles in 1964: It’s Over, which I absolutely love, and the much more famous Oh, Pretty Woman, which I’m not too keen on. Give me Roy’s big emotional ballads over his more up tempo stuff any day of the week.

And here’s the full list of UK Number One singles from that year:-

The Dave Clark Five - Glad All Over (16 January 1964 - 2 weeks at no. 1)

The Searchers - Needles and Pins (30 January 1964 - 3 weeks)

The Bachelors - Diane (20 February 1964 - 1 week)

Cilla Black - Anyone Who Had a Heart (27 February 1964 - 3 weeks)

Billy J. Kramer and the Dakotas - Little Children (19 March 1964 - 2 weeks)

The Beatles - Can't Buy Me Love (2 April 1964 - 3 weeks)

Peter and Gordon - A World Without Love (23 April 1964 - 2 weeks)

The Searchers - Don't Throw Your Love Away (7 May 1964 - 2 weeks)

The Four Pennies - Juliet (21 May 1964 - 1 week)

Cilla Black - You're My World (28 May 1964 - 4 weeks)

Roy Orbison - It's Over (25 June 1964 - 2 weeks)

The Animals - House of the Rising Sun (9 July 1964 - 1 week)

The Rolling Stones - It's All Over Now (16 July 1964 - 1 week)

The Beatles - A Hard Day's Night (23 July 1964 - 3 weeks)

Manfred Mann - Do Wah Diddy Diddy (13 August 1964 - 2 weeks)

The Honeycombs - Have I the Right? (27 August 1964 - 2 weeks)

The Kinks - You Really Got Me (10 September 1964 - 2 weeks)

Herman's Hermits - I'm Into Something Good (24 September 1964 - 2 weeks)

Roy Orbison - Oh, Pretty Woman (8 October 1964 - 2 weeks)

Sandie Shaw - (There's) Always Something There to Remind Me (22 October 1964 - 3 weeks)

Roy Orbison - Oh, Pretty Woman (12 November 1964 - 1 week)

The Supremes - Baby Love (19 November 1964 - 2 weeks)

The Rolling Stones - Little Red Rooster (3 December 1964 - 1 week)

The Beatles - I Feel Fine (10 December 1964 - 5 weeks)

Here are some more classic tracks from the 'Orrible 'Oo.

Let's start with their first ever hit single:-

The Who - I Can't Expain (1965)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1uFcPjILC7k

Secondly, what is probably their most famous song:-

The Who - My Generation (1965)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P3z0D...eature=related

Next, a song inspired by Pete Townshend's childhood holidays in the Isle of Man:-

The Who - Happy Jack (1966)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=chjFHD5694I

Finally, a song that Pete Townshend was convinced would be the band's first ever no.1 single, but when it got no higher than no.10 he felt betrayed by the British record buying public and could barely conceal his contempt for them:-

The Who - I Can See For Miles (1967)

Just a suggestion. If the OP disagrees with me, that's fine, no problem.

As there is now a Music Appreciation sub-forum I'm surprised this thread hasn't been moved there.

On the main forum, when this thread hasn't been posted to for a few days it quickly finds itself on Page 3 or 4 or maybe worse. If it were on the sub-forum it is likely to remain on the front page (albeit towards the bottom) even if it were not posted to for more as much as a week.

If the OP agrees with me perhaps he could request a move to the Music Appreciation sub-forum (with perhaps a comment in the Rare 60's Classic thread to inform 60's music fans that the 1960's Appreciation thread has now moved to that sub-forum).

P.S. Although a retro sub-forum where this thread, as well as the Rare 60's Classics, Rare 70's Classics, Rare 80's Classics, SAW threads, etc. could reside would be even better!

theres an appreciation sub forum/?... lol.. shows how much notice i take of it!

personally id prefer a retro sub forum. there are alot of older guys popping in from time to time but i expect find it hard to get interested when the majority on here are younger fanboys. i know that on buzzjack older people steered clear of retro because the sites image was one of young people.

if there was a retro sub forum there could also be a pinned beatles thread, with a major contribution from a big fan highlighting their acheivements and why they are not a boyband.... then instead of repeated arguments on the main forum, people could be directed to read that first!

however IF this thread ends up in the appreciation thread, then so be it! i only started the thread, i dont own it, nor have i often the time to post in it....although i have a few ideas to boost it when i get time!

Some good choices. Love the "Gurney Slade" theme!

I like the Jimmy Jones, Johnny Preston and Michael Cox tracks less that the other seven, but I certainly wouldn't call them turkeys - imo they're still more listenable than anything in the charts today!

Simon, instead of supplying a Youtube link for the Velvet Underground, you've duplicated the link for Francoise Hardy.

Not that I have any problem whatsoever listen to or looking at that particularly lady twice.

I’ve decided to devote my first few posts to this thread to my favourite UK Number One singles from each year of the sixties.
Here, in order of preference, are my five favourite UK Number One singles from the year 1965 (with apologies for including any track that may have previously featured in the thread):-

1. The Righteous Brothers - You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'
Magnificent.

2. The Kinks - Tired Of Waiting For You
I’ve seen Ray Davies in concert several times in recent years. He always performs a large number of classic Kinks songs, but I don’t believe I’ve ever seen him perform this one. Maybe it’s just not one of his favourites. It’s certainly one of mine.

3. The Walker Brothers - Make It Easy On Yourself
A marvellous Bacharach and David song, Scott Walker’s amazing voice and a superb production all combined to give the Walkers their first ever UK Number One single. Fabulous track.

4. The Rolling Stones - The Last Time
The first ever Stones single to be written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. I marginally prefer this track to the rather more iconic (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction, which fails to make my Top Five by a whisker.

5. Jackie Trent - Where Are You Now My Love
Guilty pleasure.

And here’s the full list of UK Number One singles from that year:-

Georgie Fame - Yeh Yeh (14 January 1965 - 2 weeks at no. 1)

The Moody Blues - Go Now (28 January 1965 - 1 week)

The Righteous Brothers - You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin' (4 February 1965 - 2 weeks)

The Kinks - Tired Of Waiting For You (18 February 1965 - 1 week)

The Seekers - I'll Never Find Another You (25 February 1965 - 2 weeks)

Tom Jones - It's Not Unusual (11 March 1965 - 1 week)

The Rolling Stones - The Last Time (18 March 1965 - 3 weeks)

Unit 4 + 2 - Concrete and Clay (8 April 1965 - 1 week)

Cliff Richard - The Minute You're Gone (15 April 1965 - 1 week)

The Beatles - Ticket to Ride (22 April 1965 - 3 weeks)

Roger Miller - King of the Road (13 May 1965 - 1 week)

Jackie Trent - Where Are You Now My Love (20 May 1965 - 1 week)

Sandie Shaw - Long Live Love (27 May 1965 - 3 weeks)

Elvis Presley - Crying in the Chapel (17 June 1965 - 1 week)

The Hollies - I'm Alive (24 June 1965 - 1 week)

Elvis Presley - Crying in the Chapel (1 July 1965 - 1 week)

The Hollies - I'm Alive (8 July 1965 - 2 weeks)

The Byrds - Mr. Tambourine Man (22 July 1965 - 2 week)

The Beatles - Help! (5 August 1965 - 3 weeks)

Sonny and Cher - I Got You Babe (26 August 1965 - 2 weeks)

The Rolling Stones - (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction (9 September 1965 - 2 weeks)

The Walker Brothers - Make It Easy On Yourself (23 September 1965 - 1 week)
