A nice little tune, I can't enjoy how much the Shadows can envoke a lot of emotion with instruments alone. See, you don't really need a singer.

Yes, possibly an element of bias with regard to Judith but if you listen to the two back to back there is no denying that the harmonies are also much tighter on the Seekers versions.

Roy Orbison - In Dreams. My fave song by The Big O
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZPmhNJbhiBo Quote:
5. Roy Orbison - It's Over
Roy Orbison had two UK Number One singles in 1964: It’s Over, which I absolutely love, and the much more famous Oh, Pretty Woman, which I’m not too keen on. Give me Roy’s big emotional ballads over his more up tempo stuff any day of the week. Quote:
There's only one way for me to follow a post devoted to Elvis and that's with a post devoted to the man who Elvis called "the greatest singer in the world", the one and only (the lonely) Roy Orbison.
This is one of Roy's greatest and most popular songs, which surprisingly was only a minor hit over here when first released:- Roy Orbison - Crying (1961) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=88810...eature=related This gem did a whole lot better, peaking at No. 2 on the British chart:- Roy Orbison - Dream Baby (1962) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=43H8WHeNM4c Linda Ronstadt's cover of the following song is one of my favourite tracks of the seventies, but the original version is pretty wonderful too:- Roy Orbison - Blue Bayou (1963) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7dPBG...eature=related Some of Roy Orbison's tracks from back then were more than just mere pop songs, they were works of art! |

I’ve decided to devote my first few posts to this thread to my favourite UK Number One singles from each year of the sixties.
In the meantime ... Here, in order of preference, are my five favourite UK Number One singles from the year 1969 (with apologies for including any track that may have previously featured in the thread):- 1. Creedence Clearwater Revival - Bad Moon Rising Fantastic track. Fantastic band. 2. The Rolling Stones - Honky Tonk Women Their eighth and final UK Number One single. Eight number ones and each one an absolute gem! 3. The Beatles with Billy Preston - Get Back A post I made on The Beatles Appreciation Thread about two weeks ago suggests that I prefer the B-sides of Beatles singles to the A-sides. While this is certainly true of most of their (non-double-A-sided) singles, it is certainly not true of this one. I think Get Back is a cracking track - I love it to pieces. As for the B-side, Don’t Let Me Down, well, quite frankly, I think it’s bloody awful! 4. Fleetwood Mac - Albatross Fleetwood Mac’s only ever UK Number One single, and I’m so glad it was achieved during the Peter Green era. 5. Desmond Dekker and the Aces - Israelites The first reggae single to top the UK charts and the first to reach the US top ten. And here’s the full list of UK Number One singles from that year:- Marmalade - Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da (4 January 1969 - 1 week at no. 1) The Scaffold - Lily the Pink (11 January 1969 - 1 week) Marmalade - Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da (18 January 1969 - 2 weeks) Fleetwood Mac - Albatross (1 February 1969 - 1 week) The Move - Blackberry Way (8 February 1969 - 1 week) Amen Corner - (If Paradise Is) Half as Nice (15 February 1969 - 2 weeks) Peter Sarstedt - Where Do You Go To (My Lovely)? (1 March 1969 - 4 weeks) Marvin Gaye - I Heard It Through the Grapevine (29 March 1969 - 3 weeks) Desmond Dekker and the Aces - Israelites (19 April 1969 - 1 week) The Beatles with Billy Preston - Get Back (26 April 1969 - 6 weeks) Tommy Roe - Dizzy (7 June 1969 - 1 week) The Beatles - The Ballad of John and Yoko (14 June 1969 - 3 weeks) Thunderclap Newman - Something in the Air (5 July 1969 - 3 weeks) The Rolling Stones - Honky Tonk Women (26 July 1969 - 5 weeks) Zager and Evans - In The Year 2525 (Exordium and Terminus) (30 August 1969 - 3 weeks) Creedence Clearwater Revival - Bad Moon Rising (20 September 1969 - 3 weeks) Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin - Je T'aime Moi Non Plus (11 October 1969 - 1 week) Bobbie Gentry - I'll Never Fall in Love Again (18 October 1969 - 1 week) The Archies - Sugar, Sugar (25 October 1969 - 8 weeks) Rolf Harris - Two Little Boys (20 December 1969 - 6 weeks) |

Just been catching up on this thread and some great songs already mentioned. Thought I would just list 10 of my favourites from the 1960's.
Marmalade – Reflections of my life http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=79NiN7ISW7E Simply one of my favourite songs of all time, I think it just made the tail end of 1969. Manfred Mann - Ragamuffin Man http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xVdVnTCfCRc Have always been a fan of them, and this is one you don’t hear much nowadays. The Move – Blackberry Way http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ELRHD4UCo74 This one always brings back happy childhood memories. Tremeloes - Call me number one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2CZL3G43FOM Not the coolest band from the ‘60s, but I always liked this track by them. Cat Stevens - Matthew and son http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HG7woCQkGUw Another favourite from my ‘60s collection. Pink Floyd - See Emily Play http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F94vHO7okZQ Can’t beat a bit of early Floyd. Monkees - Alternate title http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-iFEa7pRO1o Not bad for a manufactured band. Four Tops - Bernadette http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5pVM00eoohI My favourite track by the Four Tops. Keith West - Excerpt from a teenage opera http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0rExhxkX-Ic Great memories of this from 1967, a classic. Love Affair - Bringing on back the good times http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QlfRq4FpYWA Final one by one of the best if short lived artists from the late 1960’s. |

Here are three more very good tracks by Elvis, all from the year 1960.

Bobby Vee is hardly in the same league as Elvis or Roy Orbison, but I like him a lot; his early sixties singles now sound very "quaint", and as far as I'm concerned "quaint" is good. So here are three of his biggest hit singles, all from the year 1961. Let's start with a song that Leo Sayer also had a big hit with nearly twenty years later, although I definitely prefer Bobby Vee's version:- Bobby Vee - More Than I Can Say (1961) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LwIAEgP9gKc This was Bobby Vee's only ever No. 1 single in the USA (it peaked at No. 3 over here), a fine Goffin and King song:- Bobby Vee - Take Good Care Of My Baby (1961) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=awNqLO6auQA Let's finish with my favourite of the three; I love this track:- Bobby Vee - Run To Him (1961) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kz9SAf8Wpvc |

"Rubber Ball" is my least favourite of all of Bobby Vee's hits, which is why I omitted it from my Bobby Vee post, although I cannot deny that it definitely falls into the category that I call "quaint", as do the other two tracks in your post.
Let me reiterate that as far as I'm concerned being "quaint" is good thing! ![]() Tho' it was probably the Marty Wilde cover version........ ![]() I remember the back room in our house where the radio was and hearing this song and thinking about a rubber ball bouncing around the room............. ![]() It's the only song that I can associate with that house as we moved shortly after............ |

As the Beatles once so rightly (or, to be more precise, so wrongly) pointed out, there are Eight Days A Week, so here’s a track for each of those eight days (with a very slight bias towards Saturday).
The Small Faces - Lazy Sunday (1968) Any song that includes the line “Gawd Blimey! ‘Allo Mrs Jones, ‘ows your Bert’s lumbago?” is a winner with me! The Mamas and the Papas - Monday Monday (1966) The group’s first ever top ten hit in the UK and their only ever Number One single in the USA. Great song. The Rolling Stones - Ruby Tuesday (1967) The first slow song that the Stones released as a single, albeit as a double A-side with the up-tempo Let’s Spend The Night Together. Good track, although I actually prefer the seventies cover by Melanie Safka. Simon and Garfunkel - Wednesday Morning 3 A.M. (1964) You can’t really have a sixties thread without Simon and Garfunkel, so here’s the title track from their debut album. Although imho this is not one of their better songs, it’s pleasant enough and its title does fulfil the main criterion of the post. Country Joe and the Fish - Thursday (1967) Such an obscure track should really be on the Rare 60’s Classics thread rather than this one, but I couldn’t think of any popular sixties songs with Thursday in the title so I’ve chosen this one as I like it a great deal. This track doesn’t start off too well, but it does get considerably better. Beautiful and ethereal. The Easybeats - Friday On My Mind (1966) Classic track by an excellent Australian band. The Cougars - Saturday Nite At The Duckpond (1963) The previous year B. Bumble and the Stingers topped the UK singles chart with Nut Rocker, a rock ‘n’ roll version of an extract from Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite. Its huge success must have inspired the Cougars to try their luck with a bit of Tchaikovsky too, as here they give us a Shadows-style version of an extract from Swan Lake. Not as successful as Nut Rocker, but a great track nonetheless. Sam Cooke - Another Saturday Night (1963) I’m a massive fan of Sam Cooke, and although this track is not one of my favourites by him, I still think it’s pretty darn good, so here it is. |

As Vobosity included this record in the Number 1 hits from 1968 , but was not included in his pick , thought I would rectify that .
