This is my tenth and final post devoted to my favourite UK Number One singles from each year of the sixties. I now need to decide whether my future posts will also have some sort of theme or will just be random tracks that I like.
In the meantime ...
Here, in order of preference, are my five favourite UK Number One singles from the year 1969 (with apologies for including any track that may have previously featured in the thread):-
1.
Creedence Clearwater Revival - Bad Moon Rising
Fantastic track. Fantastic band.
2.
The Rolling Stones - Honky Tonk Women
Their eighth and final UK Number One single. Eight number ones and each one an absolute gem!
3.
The Beatles with Billy Preston - Get Back
A post I made on
The Beatles Appreciation Thread about two weeks ago suggests that I prefer the B-sides of Beatles singles to the A-sides. While this is certainly true of most of their (non-double-A-sided) singles, it is certainly not true of this one. I think
Get Back is a cracking track - I love it to pieces. As for the B-side,
Don’t Let Me Down, well, quite frankly, I think it’s bloody awful!
4.
Fleetwood Mac - Albatross
Fleetwood Mac’s only ever UK Number One single, and I’m so glad it was achieved during the Peter Green era.
5.
Desmond Dekker and the Aces - Israelites
The first reggae single to top the UK charts and the first to reach the US top ten.
And here’s the full list of UK Number One singles from that year:-
Marmalade - Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da (4 January 1969 - 1 week at no. 1)
The Scaffold - Lily the Pink (11 January 1969 - 1 week)
