Am not a massive rock fan myself so dont miss the guitars too much and am delighted he even managed to include a few soul licks on All for Nothing and Pull Me Under. The latter was the tune I had in my head when I woke up this morning.

Congratulations to everybody on moving on to part 35, who'd have thought it this time last year.”

Given the very wide range of tastes (as well as record label bosses he has had to accomodate), I think he's done a pretty good job with the mix of the album. I'm a rock fan so losing All for Nothing and Beat of a Breaking Heart and adding in Chemical and another kick ass rock song would have been better for me but I recognise that for some of his fans the emotional stripped back stuff is their favourite and so losing AFN and BOABH would be heresy.

Similarly I'd be happy to lose the strings and just replace them with guitars.

At the end of the day though, most of us seem to have half a dozen tracks on the album that we really love, which is quite an achievement for any artist. For me it's Amazing, Pull Me Under, Faithless, Stars and Lovers, Reflections and Letters.

The only ones I'm not keen on are the two I mentioned above and even them I'm liking more today than I did yesterday.

Equally, whilst I like the acoustic tracks, they don't do much for me really - his voice is great but I prefer the full instrumentation - but then I do with his other stuff

I've only been listening on my I phone/PC so the sound quality isn't that good, but haven't really noticed the guitars or rock element so much. The best thing about Seven Summers was the twangly guitars, and I suppose I was hoping for a bit of that. Heaven knows where you would squeeze it in, but I would have liked a big loud noisy track somewhere like Dirt or When you wake. (Yob that I am!). Not that I'm criticising the goodies we have been given. *kneels and bows before his Cardleness* ”

evening Cardie

I agree with you. I would have liked a "Picture Of You" and a " Growing Out"! Two tracks that still, after nearly a year of daily listenning, give me goosebumps!
At the moment its only the accoustic tracks that are having that effect!
I will probably change my mind , though, when I hear it all properly!

HI Everyone,

I miss the guitars a bit especially as Dirt and Growing Up High were my favourites. However there will be other albums where I'm sure the guitars will make it back.

Not been playing the previews much cause I feel a need to wait til the album comes out. Don't think I can face another rendition of RFYL, nice song but it's been repeated on my Youtube playlist for days now....(I've started to mute it)

Welcome to Josh and good to be on thread 35.

Yes I know. I'm being selfish but, it would have jjust been so great if he had been involved in writing every song on the album and Chemical is a big loss. As you mentioned I think Amazing is the standout track (despite stiff competition). And I think we can all agree on Stars and Lovers as the next single (despite the blatant deception in the lyrics.)

And on a positive note I really am pleased that they didnt go overboard on the production. If it had been done in the style of When We Collide/Many of Horror I really would be sulking.

Ha ha Thats so true! It wouldnt have rhymed though.

My absolute favourites (by which I mean my favourite tracks for absolute ages, not just my favourite tracks on the album) are Stars and Lovers and Amazing, pretty closely followed by Pull Me Under (Michael Jackson-y), Starlight, Walking on Water with Faithless following up the rear. All for You is the one I've had the most trouble getting into but its growing on me and I love Beat of a Breaking Heart except that one line which is a little ...sentimental for me? It sounds so lovely though...and the rest of the lyrics are beautiful.

I really love the acoustic of Amazing but the For You acoustic has just a bit too much falsetto for me. I could maybe have done with a big rocky Dirt/Youngblood type track too but the pace does change quite alot. Its unfortunate WWC had to be on it - I'd have had Chemical or the free track (whose name escapes me). I love the production all round - I think Biff just gets him.

Stars and Lovers feels a bit Christmassy someone said today. Maybe it'd work for the second single round about then? Word cant express how much I love that track. Its epic - got the same mega goosebumps feel (just for me of course) as Viva la Vida.

Hi Bokonon

Lol! I remember that Didnt he also say that he would like to have the power to "Switch Off Time" and lie down for a kip!

It reminded me , at the time, of something my son would say (Lazy boy)!!

I'd not thought of it as christmassy, but had thought of it as Coldplay'y. I can see that chorus resonating around an arena with phones lit up and swaying!

Also agree with you too on the rock part. I was worried it would be real heavy rock/guitar stuff but its just perfect and I truly love very song, even RFYL, I know I was complaining earlier, I do like it, just knew there was better stuff to come but agree with everyone, the publicity for this single is amazing.

Honestly, finding it hard to get into 7S and Darwyn... its very out of my music comfort zone, very rock heavy but i just love matt's voice so it doesn't matter what kind of music it is

I hadnt either until someone else said it and then I thought...yeah I can see that in bits, for sure. Its so feelgood apart from anything else.

I can definitely see it as an arena/stadium chorus - its epic. (Well we can dream!)

Some of the dreams come true liz I love this album its so much more than I thought it would be. Whilst saying I love the album I don't love all of the songs with the same intensity one could not do so I feel. However for me the most cohesive part of the album is Matt's voice love the sound.

This really makes my point about how hard it is to get the balance. For my 7S and Darwyn are very light rock. My other current (as opposed to been around for a hundred years) is Gaslight Anthem - this is what I would call a rock band - Matt's stuff is quite fluffy in comparison.

Hello there, very nice to meet you. Sorry for the confusion. We shouldnt beat up too much on RFYL- he does sing it really well. Keep trying with Darwyn though. Not only do they have great songs and great vocals they also have this thread's all time favourite percussionist.

Yes I think that's right. So the alternative lyric should have been:

If somebody asked me on a show like X Factor
What my favourite supepower would
It would be stopping the clocks
So I could have a nice sleep
And when I woke up...
I would have a big claw.

Very beautiful and surely much preferable to Matt's lyric.

Yes I lurked around a bit and saw the reaction fo Stars and Lovers. I think a few people were saying that it almost sounded like a cover. Its one of those songs that is so straightforward and catchy that you kind of think you must have been done before. Certainly that's what I thought.

I love all the falsetto stuff- some may recall that when Matt was on the programme I was egging him on to do Al Green covers. But like most of my ideas, it probably wasnt a very good one.

See you all later.

Surely he could then go on to a nice verse about Dyson handdryers and Pizza express

anyway I seem to have fallen back into the habit of hanging around on here all night so I'm going to clear off

I'll be back when something happens - I believe there may be a gig tomorrow
