OK, the bit about vertical P+/P- buttons makes some sense. That's another debate in my mind, if you visualise the channel list as a list P+ should be below P-, but it's usually the other way

Oh, in v5.2 there's a long pause going into manual tune, just like there used to be, but that's fine, better there than in other places

So, might be worth switching it off and on a few times (wait until the clock has gone off until switching it back on) rather than the manual update function via the menus. Obviously, if it is making a recording at the time, it isn't going to check for updates until that recording has been completed.”

I've tried this and tried a few more manual searches but it still hasn't picked up the update. One time it did actually get through to the end of the search and said it hadn't found an update, rather than just stopping at the first block forever. It says "Very Good" signal for the BBC Mux.

If you do manage to get the update then you will probably lose all your existing timer settings and any other config settings you have - although all recordings should remain intact.

On this basis, I suggest it may be worth running a First Time Installation on your box to set everything back to defaults. Wait a few minutes for the box to settle down (but don't change any settings or add any timers etc), then power it down with the R/C. This should then initiate an automatic update. After this has completed, reboot and, assuming you are then at v5.2, you can install your timers etc.

Thanks for the advice, Zill. But I don't think I'll have the chance to try it now unless I get up early tomorrow! Since we will be using the box to record and watch stuff for the rest of this evening. I daresay they'll re-broadcast the update a few times though so I can try it then.

Ok now for the complaints about V5.2 and some old problems are back.

Video and audio just stopping dead while watching a channel.
Video and audio switching to another channel, I was watching BBC One, left the room for a while and came back to adverts, front panel display still said 0001.

I have returned to Low Power mode On, hoping it might improve things.

Updating from v3.5 to v5.2 probably won't wipe timers or trigger an FTI - at least, that was the case when upgrading from v3.4 to v5.2. There will be a repeat broadcast on 31st August.

May I ask where you bought your Hitachi from?

From Argos. I tried a manual search for updates this morning before 9 a.m. and it said it didn't find any, also tried the low power thing (and it took a few minutes for the clock to go away) and it was still 3.5 when I turned it back on. I didn't have time to do first time installation before the broadcast was supposed to finish though, so I didn't try that.

My transmitter is the Nottingham one if that makes any difference.

I too cannot update from 3.5 to 5.2 in my case it's on two Luxor T835 's from Asda. I updated a Hitachi T835 from 3.4 to 5.2 no bother. My conclusion is that it may be that it will not update from factory set 3.5 but will from 3.4. Futaura you seem to be the expert here do you think this may be the case.

That's what I'm thinking, yes. I shall try and obtain a definitive answer on this. It could be that v3.5 has a different OAD ID for some reason, which doesn't match any of the recent broadcasts. Of course, it can be upgraded via serial, but that's not a lot of use for most people I know.

Interestingly enough my Bush Box originally came with 3.5 but picked up the OAD in January when 4.6 was released so there was no problem at that time in OAD from 3.5 . I subsequently went back to 3.4 . I tried the June OAD for 4.8 but couldn't pick it up on auto download and manual hung for such a long time I abandoned it.(see my post #314)
Although you say it can be downloaded by serial I am not aware of any download link for the file-can you elaborate?

I believe futaura is suggesting muckleroe could install 3.4 via serial.

Have tried this morning to update from 3.5 (factory set) to 5.2 on my Luxor T835 but no joy. It appears that this update will not work on this model. Look forward to your post futaura when you get some more info. Also anyone else who has the same problem.

Yes, still the same with my Hitachi HDR255 which came with 3.5 - it doesn't pick up the upgrade to 5.2.

Thanks catsitter, will just wait till futaura replies when he has further info. I must admit I have had no issues with the factory set v3.5 so not a huge prob.

Doubtful whether I will get any further info - thought I would have had a reply by now . If anyone has a tuner card on their PC (I don't), it should be possible to snoop at or save the OADs. Going back to the v3.4 OAD, there were two different software files broadcast at the same time: GordianT835UK001.dcf and GordianT835UK003.dcf. The most common version is the 003 one which is shared by most/all brands. I'm not sure what that 001 is for, but maybe a revision of the box with a different front panel display, as if you load that on a 003 box, the front panel display is all messed up.

If you're getting an error message that no updates were found, probably either they are not being transmitted by your transmitter or maybe some boxes shipped with v3.5 that had a different OAD ID - e.g. GordianT835UK002.dcf.

Thanks futaura, that's fine, will keep checking here in case you do get any more information. Appreciate your assistance.

We've been running the 5.3 test version for a few weeks now and it's been fine so far. I still have auto downloads disabled, so no idea whether it would attempt to load the official 5.2. If you're happy with 3.4 / 3.5, then don't worry if it's not updating.

Cheers

Has anyone seen any advantages of 5.2 over 3.4 , other than the info button ?

I ask because I'm thinking of reverting to 3.4 as I have seen the return of the glitches in recordings that I had before DSO. i.e skipping of words/whole sentences that I mentioned in post 158.

Logic says it is the signal but I have made no aerial changes and it can't be weather related as happened different days, different channels. I have only noticed it on recordings made in last couple of weeks and it is very irritating!

I've seen occasional skips in recordings on every version of firmware I've run. Never figured out a common or obvious cause though.

Deleting or fast forwarding recordings whilst recording another program can cause skipping on the new recording, regardless of firmware version.

Thanks Mark and ndsussex. Deleting I can save until a non-recording time, however I will always fast forward through the ads of a recording so that could be when I am making another recording, but it is worth bearing in mind.

I only mentioned it as I've only seen a return of it since 5.2 and also the box went into the situation I had seen with 4.8 - no picture just sound, had to switch off to low standby to get it back. This was when I was continually trying to rewind to see skipped scenes, so probably too many commands for the box to process.

I very rarely use RW/FF... In my experience, during the recording, the 30/120 second skip buttons are much more useful and far less likely to cause skipping in active recordings. I think you'll find there are no differences between v3.4 and v5.2 in regard to skipping issues.

thanks for those, I never knew they existed. I just nturally used the RW/FF from VCR days. I looked through the manual (both Hitachi and Bush) and can find no mention of those button functions.

Whilst looking through the manual I did see another feature that does not(or no longer exists). In timer list when there are conflicts it says it should show an upward arrow against conflicted programs.

Now if you could just sort out having subtitles always available instead of the hit and miss , come and go as they are now....

Where are those buttons, please? Or does the Hitachi not have them?
