She has a great voice!
I just thought the opening of When Love Takes Over sounds very much like the opening to Clocks by Coldplay, or Breath of Life by Erasure.

it's amazing isn't it! I can't wait to RIP my own CD though, the quality of the one I have is kinda just bog standard mp3 and this is an album you NEED in a really high bitrate

It's just a beautiful album, musically and lyrically.

I agree about quality (I haven't listened to the full album yet). I had 'Next To Me' which was ripped from a YouTube video I think, and it didn't do the quality justice. Can't wait for the CD.

I am bit mixed really. From Mountains onwards, the album becomes really dreary to listen to. The three singles released do not represent the album at all and if that is what you are after, a lot of people will be disappointed.

I am gonna give it a few more listens though Read All About Part 3 is bloody stunning.

I've just listened to the album too and I agree on the basis of if everyone is expecting the singles quality, its diverse. However, this music is my kind of music so I like it (if that makes sense).

Best tracks (for me, so far):
-Heaven
-My Kind Of Love
-Daddy
-Suitcase
-Next To Me
-Hope
-Read All About It (Part lll).

I agree littlemonster, 'RAAI(Plll)' is stunning. So good and definitely what I was expecting, she's made the track even stronger. Really hope that song alone gets some recognition in the way 'Empire state of mind part ll' did.

I'm surprised Emeli hasn't tweeted about Whitney Houston. I'm sure she's one of her many inspirtations. In the album art, there are images of Billie Holiday and Nina Simone which I thought was lovely.

I swear some of the echos and sounds from Lana Del Rey's album tracks (mainly 'born to die' and 'national anthem') are in 'My Kind Of Love'. Amazing song.

Hey guys. I just saw her last night in San Francisco. You can see pics at @shadesofblack2

I will also post video on youtube soon.

I'm writing a review in the next few days but to summarize:

She sounded great live. Daddy, Maybe, My Kind of Love were the highlights for me, but she sang them all well. Not really feeling Mountains, tbh.

The venue had about 100 people and it was sold out! That's how small it was. Crazy. I had to lean back when she started rocking out to My Kind of Love cause she was that close!
I made it a road trip from So Cal to Nor Cal for the show. Totally worth it!

Here's the review.

Concert Review: Emeli Sande
Venue: Café Du Nord, San Francisco

The Voice: Emeli Sande can SING. I swear she channels the soul of a southern Baptist soloist taking it to the church. Let there be no mistake, this girl’s voice grabs you by the throat and beats you into submission. You seriously cannot look away. I was close enough to her guitarist that I could have strummed the guitar for him, yet I never looked at him twice. I have not heard that much power and emotion in a voice since Adele. And there’s no getting around comparing the two. They both forego fireworks and crazy costumes and although Emeli can actually move to her fast songs, neither girl is going to pull a Beyonce on the dance front. Both girls are talented songwriters and both can sing the hell out of a song. Between the two Adele has the advantage of a singular voice (I am beating myself about the head for taking a word that Gwyneth Paltrow used first, but what the hell, it works). When I listen to Adele I don’t think of any other singer. Ever. It gives her a pass on having to compete with a hundred other singers vying for the same crowd of music fans. Emeli, even with that voice, is going to have to work harder.
The show: Simple, short and sweet. From the first line of the first song (Heaven) she killed it. She comes across as a kind, genuine girl with a powerhouse voice, on the edge of something very big. There is no way she has her head wrapped around it all yet.
Highlight: The back-story and performance of My Kind Of Love.
The Venue: This venue held a hundred people sold out and you were that close. When Emeli really got into a song, like My Kind Of Love, I had to lean back out of the way of her swinging arms. Picture a two-car garage. Now picture that garage a little bit bigger and you have the size of it. Café Du Nord is a noted club/bar from the Prohibition era and it feels like it in the best ways. The acoustics were great and the atmosphere inside the place actually elevated the show, if that’s possible.

The Crowd: Industry and fans that follow the UK music scene (since her album does not drop here in the states until June 5). Everybody was really cool and friendly with no pushing or vying for place up front (I didn’t have to pull out my don’t f*ing mess with me face, which never seems to work for me anyway ).

Breaking America: It’s either up or out. I hope her team is as savvy as Adele’s because it would be a shame to let this girl fade away. If rumors of opening for Coldplay in the states are correct, then they’ve made a great first move.

I love Emeli Sande and her album so thank you for your review shadesofblack.

Out of curiosity, what is the back story to 'My Kind Of Love' (my favourite track on the album).

Out of curiosity, what is the back story to 'My Kind Of Love' (my favourite track on the album).
The backstory was centered on when she was a medical school student. She said that when anyone came through the doors at the hospital, race didn't matter and class and fame etc...didn't matter. You were just a patient like everyone else there that day. Illness is a great equalizer type of statement. And it brings out what is important, it's love that gets people through the toughest times. She said it all much better then I just paraphrased for you! Sorry!
