I just had a thought that

Spoiler
As there will be an altered timeline, AND by the looks of it the one with Live Chess. Maybe the one from the altered timeline dies in his place? a la The Girl who waited?

In the final episode...

Amy Pond is actually a Time Lord but she was given a mind-wipe at birth but now discovers the truth. This explains why her daughter, River Song, is a Time Lord too. The Doctor had to come up with a fake reason why Amy's child was a Time Lord so he invented the stuff about Amy and Rory having sex in the Tardis.

Steven Moffat makes his first on-screen cameo as an out-of-work writer called Jimmy Shakespeare and proclaims "the end is nigh, the end is nigh!" Everyone believes he's mad, so nothing new there.

Oh, and Rory dies. Again. But then comes back to life. Again.

Which would mean we could never have another Doctor other than Matt Smith, or there'd have to be a convenient regeneration back into him at the very end of the show. Which would be tricky to do if that doesn't happen for years as Matt would be quite a lot older than the scenes in TIA....

But then the whole timeline of the 10th Doctor from that point on would be different, so he might not regenerate at the same time, and the 11th Doctor mgiht not meet Amy when he did, etc..

Fireproof obviously.

That seems a little harsh but OK.

Are you really picking holes in an idea for a terrible resolution?

No, just pointing out the consequences of it actually happening - more than 2 series of DW would not happen, and the entire future could be drastically different.

And so it's more like an impossible resolution.

Perhaps he thinks that the series is unlikely still to be on air in 200 years time?

Of course that would make explaining any future regenerations a bit tricky, as the 1100 year old Doctor still looks like Matt Smith. ”

can someone remind me 'cos I haven't watched the first 2 eps since they aired -

the doctor we see killed is 200 years older than the one we saw in last nights ep .

right ?

so why was last nights Doc saying he had to die tomorrow ?

The 200 years passed between The God Complex and Closing Time, so we saw the 1103 year old Doctor last night, whereas he was 908 when he left Amy and Rory in TGC
