1.Currently, whispanet comes free with the device. It's carried across different national networks, depending on wihch country ......

2. You might be swtiched from 3G to EDGE/GPRS when the client 3G network is heavily loaded. Webpage downloads then take longer. It's a good idea to bookmark websites you might want via Kinstant, which re-directs you to the mobile version of a website (or via google mobile, if there's no WAP version). Then, selecting the saved bookmark takes you directly to the mobile version.

3. You can only directly download AND SAVE either mobi or txt files. The Kindle 2 also had HTML - ie, save a webpage - but version 3 doesn't.

4. It's possible Amazon may withdraw completely free webbrowsing, at some future date,

5. You can, for example, use an online file converter. and transform PDF files to mobi then download the converted mobi .....with mixed results!

6. There's also a dropbox method of putting files on the Kindle, via Whispanet, as described in various blogs.

7. The Amazon charge for file transfer only applies to thier documents converted via whispanet service, but you can also do it for free, via wi fi access only!

8. And there's Kindle Feeder. I think you can have up to 10 RSS feeds for free!

Plus I don't think the actual data transferred is that great given the web page restrictions or if you are using the mobile versions of the site (which any sane person will use).
Sure, if you keep your Kindle for 10plus years you will be up, but I don't think many of us will be using the model we currently have in 10 years time.”

Regardless of the rats Amazon gets (which are kind of irrelevant really), as a regular traveller, that extra 41 Quid for a simple roaming 3G browser is money well spent. I will recoup that in a month, easily....

I live in Spain and use my Kindle for emails when away from my home. Also used it for emails in India,Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam with no charges.

if I got the kindle 3 im wondering how I can get text in it
will it hook up to my computor ?

I dont have wi fi, I just want to use it to read text and maybe use the text to voice that I think is built in.

Could I buy the kindle 3 at curries or anywhere local ?

I wonder how many voices it has ?

Im just worried in case I buy it and find that it only accepts amazon type text files and amazon books at £3 a download etc.

Hopefully I can whiz in any ond text from my computor !

I think text-to-speech is only for things in amazon's .mobi formats. (I may be wrong). Without WiFi, the only free way to transfer your own (non-kindle-store) material is via USB, plugged in to your PC, then it's just drag and drop.

There's a list of formats the kindle can read, I believe .txt is one of them.

You can just connect it to your computer via USB and drag and drop.

Alternatively you make a kindle email address on the kindle and Email the file.

According to Wikipedia - Kindle (AZW), TXT, PDF, unprotected MOBI, and PRC files natively. HTML, DOC, DOCX, JPEG, GIF, PNG, and BMP are supported through conversion. They are also able to play Audible (Audible Enhanced(AA,AAX)) and MP3 files.
