Lyrically Amazing Songs!!!
Post 'em here:
"I never wanted anything so much, then to drown in your love, and not feel your rain" Gravity by Sara Bareilles "I won't go as a passenger no, waiting for the road to be laid. Though I maybe going down, I'm taking flame over burning out. Compare, where you are and where you wanna be and you'll get nowhere" Uncharted by Sara Bareilles "For a million lonely people, another lonely day, for a million hearts that open a million break" Lukas by Natalie Imbruglia "Doesn't matter who we are, everyone has their scars" Scars by Natalie Imbruglia |

4st. 7lbs." We only said goodbye with words
I died a hundred times You go back to her And I go back to black In those lyrics there's the universal going back to black that anyone might feel having been left by their lover. Then there's Amy Winehouse's blackness, which you get the impression is a darker place than many of us experience. It's the way she sings it. |

Mariah carey - The roof
It wasn't raining yet (yet), But it was definitely a little misty on that warm November night (but it was definitely), And my heart was pounding (pounding), My inner voice resounding (oh), Begging me to turn away, But I just had to see your face to feel alive (to feel alive), And then you casually walked in the room (oh), And I was twisted in the web of my desire for you (and I was twisted), My apprehension blew away, I only wanted you to taste my sadness as you kissed me in the dark (oh), Every time I feel the need, I envision you caressing me, And go back in time, To relive the splendor of you and I, On the rooftop that rainy night, And so we finished the Moët and started feeling liberated, And I surrendered as you took me in your arms (you took me in your arms), I was so caught up in the moment, I couldn't bear to let you go yet, So I threw caution to the wind and started listening to my longing heart (so I), And then you softly pressed your lips to mine (oh), And feelings surfaced I'd suppressed for such a long, long time (and I was lifted), And for a while I forgot the sorrow and the pain (oh), And melted with you as we stood there in the rain, Every time I feel the need, I envision you caressing me (envision you caressing me), And go back in time (back), To relive the splendor of you and I (you and I), On the rooftop that rainy night, Every time I feel the need (every time), I envision you caressing me (envision you), And go back in time, To relive the splendor of you and I (you), On the rooftop that rainy night, Last night I dreamed that I whispered the words I love you, And touched you so very subtly as we were kissing goodbye, Oh, Oh yeah, yeah, Oh, Pretty baby, How I'm missing you, Every time, |

Gotta Be : STORMS by Fleetwood Mac (written by Stevie Nicks)
Every night that goes between I feel a little less As you slowly go away from me This is only another test Every night you do not come Your softness fades away Did I ever really care that much Is there anything left to say Every hour of fear I spend My body tries to cry Living through each empty night A deadly calm inside I haven't felt this way I feel Since many a year ago But in those years and the lifetimes past I did not deal with the road And I did not deal with you I know Tho the love has always been So I search to find an answer there So I can truly win Every hour of fear I spend My body tries to cry Living through each empty night A deadly calm inside So I try to say Goodbye my friend I'd like to leave you with something warm But never have I been a blue calm sea I have always been a storm always been a storm ooh always been a storm I have always been a storm We were frail She said, "Everynight he will break your heart" I should have known from the first I'd be the broken-hearted I loved you from the start Save us... And not all the prayers in the world -- could save us On 'Tusk' |

Surely ABBA's 'The Winner Takes It All' is a contender
I don't wanna talk About things we've gone through Though it's hurting me Now it's history I've played all my cards And that's what you've done too Nothing more to say No more ace to play The winner takes it all The loser's standing small Beside the victory That's her destiny I was in your arms Thinking I belonged there I figured it made sense Building me a fence Building me a home Thinking I'd be strong there But I was a fool Playing by the rules The gods may throw a dice Their minds as cold as ice And someone way down here Loses someone dear The winner takes it all The loser has to fall It's simple and it's plain Why should I complain But tell me does she kiss Like I used to kiss you Does it feel the same When she calls your name Somewhere deep inside You must know I miss you But what can I say Rules must be obeyed The judges will decide The likes of me abide Spectators of the show Always staying low The game is on again A lover or a friend A big thing or a small The winner takes it all I don't wanna talk cause it makes me feel sad And I understand You've come to shake my hand I apologize If it makes you feel bad Seeing me so tense No self-confidence But you see The winner takes it all The winner takes it all From 'Super Trouper' http://www.musicchartheaven.com/Abba/supertrouper.htm |

Not sure what the general opinion of rap is here, but some of Eminiem's songs are lyrically brilliant, if not always sane or clean.
Eg this bit from Not Afraid: "I'mma be what I set out to be, without a doubt undoubtedly And all those who look down on me I'm tearing down your balcony No if ands or buts don't try to ask him why or how can he From Infinite down to the last Relapse album he's still s**ttin' Whether he's on salary, paid hourly Until he bows out or he s**t's his bowels out of him Whichever comes first, for better or worse" There are loads more from him and other artists, but this will do for now. |

Some of my favourite lyrics are:
The Kinks - 20th Century Man This is the age of machinery, A mechanical nightmare, The wonderful world of technology, Napalm, hydrogen bombs, biological warfare, This is the twentieth century, But too much aggravation It's the age of insanity, What has become of the green pleasant fields of Jerusalem. Ain't got no ambition, I'm just disillusioned I'm a twentieth century man but I don't wanna be here. My mama said she can't understand me She can't see my motivation Just give me some security, I'm a paranoid schizoid product of the twentieth century. You keep all your smart modern writers Give me William Shakespeare You keep all your smart modern painters I'll take Rembrandt, Titian, Da Vinci and Gainsborough, Girl we gotta get out of here We gotta find a solution I'm a twentieth century man but I don't want to die here. I was born in a welfare state Ruled by bureaucracy Controlled by civil servants And people dressed in grey Got no privacy, got no liberty Cos the twentieth century people Took it all away from me. Don't wanna get myself shot down By some trigger happy policeman, Gotta keep a hold on my sanity I'm a twentieth century man but I don't wanna die here. My mama says she can't understand me She can't see my motivation Ain't got no security, I'm a twentieth century man but I don't wanna be here. This is the twentieth century But too much aggravation This is the edge of insanity I'm a twentieth century man but I don't wanna be here. Arctic Monkeys - When the Sun Goes Down I said, who's that girl there? I wonder what went wrong So that she had to roam the streets She doesn't do major credit cards I doubt she does receipts It's all not quite legitimate And what a scummy man Just give him half a chance I bet he'll rob you if he can Can see it in his eyes, yeah That he's got a driving ban Amongst some other offences And I've seen him with girls of the night And he told Roxanne to put on her red light They're all infected but he'll be alright Cause he's a scumbag, don't you know I said he's a scumbag, don't you know Although you're trying not to listen Avert your eyes and staring at the ground She makes a subtle proposition I'm sorry love, I'll have to turn you down And oh, he must be up to something What are the chances? Sure it's more than likely I've got a feeling in my stomach You start to wonder what his story might be What his story might be, yeah They said he changes when the sun goes down Yeah, they said he changes when the sun goes down And they said he changes when the sun goes down around here Around here Look, here comes a Ford Mondeo Isn't he Mr. Inconspicuous And he ain't even have to say owt She's in the stance ready to get picked up Bet she's delighted when she sees him Pulling in and giving her the eye Because she must be ****ing freezing Scantily clad beneath the clear night sky It doesn't stop in the winter, no And they said he changes when the sun goes down Yeah, they said he changes when the sun goes down And they said he changes when the sun goes down Around here Well they said he changes when the sun goes down Over the river, going out of town They said he changes when the sun goes down Around here Around here And what a scummy man Just give him half a chance I bet he'll rob you if he can Can see it in his eyes, yeah That he's got a nasty plan I hope you're not involved at all |

Kelly Clarkson - How I Feel
I think most people can relate to it. Looks like I made a mess again Heartbreak everywhere I step This fire is getting hot again But I touch the flame 'cause I'm a curious cat Creeping where I don't belong Finding out what I knew all along Crying all alone And it's all my fault, all my fault Yeah, I did it again...again Oh, I'm getting tired of believing Even sicker of pretending That it's not so bad, just wait it out Oh, I think you're feeding me lies again The only good man left wasn't him And that's how I feel right now so just let me be Let me be It seems every time I find a good man He's got a good little wife I'm not jealous but I won't lie I don't want to hear about your wonderful life And babies everywhere I look Trophy wives with their little black books At this rate I'm gonna end up alone It's probably all my fault, all my fault Oh, another dead end:again Oh, I'm getting tired of believing Even sicker of pretending That it's not so bad, just wait it out Oh, I think you're feeding me lies again The only good man left wasn't him And that's how I feel right now Bitter pill that I've swallowed Just how low can my heart sink Fairy tales from so long ago Save them for someone that's not smart enough to know 'Cause I, I'm getting tired of believing I'm through pretending Yeah I'm broken and sad so I'll sit this one out Oh I think you're feeding me lies again The only good man left wasn't him And that's how I feel right now |

I'm going to say The Mercy Seat by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, just for how cleverly it's done. A man is about to be executed for a crime he swears he didn't commit. While undergoing the punishment, he recalls the Bible, and begins comparing the electric chair to the mercy seat of God. Then in his last breath, he admits to his sins and admits that he did commit the crime he was sentenced for after all. Extremely well done.

I usually have lyrics in a song that I really like for some reason here are some examples:
"You make my life worthwhile with the slightest smile then destoy me with a barely perceptable whisper" - Dreamer's Ball by Queen. Love these lyrics so easy to relate to "I cried for you on the kitchen floor" - You Know I'm No Good by Amy Winehouse. Don't know why but these particular words appeal to me. Fantastic song "On my birthday you sang me a heart of gold with a guitar humming" - You and I by Lady Gaga. Such a catchy song. Addicted to it. |

I'm calling virtually anything by the Dresden Dolls. Most of their songs have lyrics that manage to be both open to interpretation and hard-hitting. Their songs represent quite complex emotions and human reactions as well, which is a lot more unusual in music than it ought to be. So much of their stuff strikes a chord with me personally, as well.
Delilah: There's no end to the love you can give When you change your point of view to underfoot Very good You may be flat but you're breathing And there's no doubt he's at home in his room Probably watching porn of you from the fall It's last call And you're the last one leaving And you thought you could change the world By opening your legs Well it isn't very hard Try kicking them instead And you thought you could change his mind By changing your perfume to the kind his mother wore Oh God Delilah, why? I never met a more impossible girl In this same bar where you slammed down your hand And said "Amanda, I'm in love" No you're not You're just a sucker for the ones who use you And it doesn't matter what I say or do The stupid bastard's gonna have his way with you You're an unrescuable schizo Or else you're on the rag If you take him back I'm gonna lose my nerve I never met a more impossible girl At four o'clock he got off And you called up "I'm down at Denny's on route one And you won't guess what he's done" Is that a fact Delilah? Larry tap let you in through the back And use his calling card again For a quick hand of gin You are impossible, Delilah: the princess of denial And after 7 years in advertising you are none the wiser You're an unrescuable schizo Or else you're on the rag 'Cause if you take him back I'm gonna lose my nerve He's gonna beat you like a pillow You schizos never learn And if you take him home You'll get what you deserve So don't cry Delilah You're still alive Delilah You need a ride Delilah? Let's see how fast this thing can go |

Usually I don't care for lyrics, because most of them are just random words and sentences strung together. Many times you can't even hear what the singer is singing, especially when performing live. So what's the point of lyrics then? And if you actually do hear the lyrics, most of the songs are about the same stuff: love, heart break and relationship problems. Yawn. So the kind of lyrics I like are either quirky and very ambiguous, or deal with a very tough topic. Here's a few:
Massive Attack - Teardrop (very weird lyrics) Faithless - Many songs (can be very thoughtful but also funny) Cranberries - Zombie (extremely moving, the only song that has ever made my cry) |

Dire Straits: Brothers in Arms
These mist covered mountains Are a home now for me But my home is the lowlands And always will be Some day you'll return to Your valleys and your farms And you'll no longer burn To be brothers in arms Through these fields of destruction Baptisms of fire I've witnessed your suffering As the battles raged higher And though they hurt me so bad In the fear and alarm You did not desert me My brothers in arms There's so many different words So many different songs We have just one world But we live in different ones Now the sun's gone to hill And the moon's riding high Let me bid you farewell Every man has to die But it's written in the starlight And every line on your palm We're fools to make war On our brothers in arms -------------------------------- If ever one song captured a major historical event, it was The Scorpions: Winds of Change. I crossed the Iron Curtain in August 89 - two months before the Wall fell - and you could feel something big was in the air Follow the Moskwa Down to Gorky Park Listening to the wind of change An August summer night Soldiers passing by Listening to the wind of change The world is closing in Did you ever think That we could be so close, like brothers The future's in the air Can feel it everywhere Blowing with the wind of change Take me to the magic of the moment On a glory night Where the children of tomorrow dream away In the wind of change Walking down the street Distant memories Are buried in the past, forever I follow the Moskwa Down to Gorky Park Listening to the wind of change Take me to the magic of the moment On a glory night Where the children of tomorrow share their dreams With you and me Take me to the magic of the moment On a glory night Where the children of tomorrow dream away In the wind of change The wind of change Blows straight into the face of time Like a storm wind that will ring the freedom bell For peace of mind Let your balalaika sing What my guitar wants to say Take me to the magic of the moment On a glory night Where the children of tomorrow share their dreams With you and me Take me to the magic of the moment On a glory night Where the children of tomorrow dream away In the wind of change |

Mariah Carey - 'We Belong Together'
Clever referencing of a Bobby Womack song ('If You Think You're Lonely Now') and a Babyface song ('Two Occasions') I can't sleep at night when you are on my mind Bobby Womack's on the radio singing to me: "If you think you're lonely now..." Wait a minute, this is too deep (too deep) I gotta change the station So I turn the dial, trying to catch a break And then I hear Babyface I only think of you and it's breaking my heart I'm trying to keep it together ...But I'm falling apart |

One more Arrow - Elton John (Lyrics - Bernie Taupin)
He said I want to grow up And look like Robert Mitchum And I hope that when I'm gone There'll be some say that I miss him He must have been romantic He must have sensed adventure And I feel the steel of his strong will In the frame around his picture And he's one more arrow flying through the air One more arrow landing in a shady spot somewhere Where the days and nights blend into one And he can always feel the sun Through the soft brown earth that holds him Forever always young He could have been a boxer But the fight game seemed so dirty We argued once he knocked me down And he cried when he thought he'd hurt me Strictly from the old school He was quiet about his pain And if one in ten could be that brave I would never hate again One more arrow One more arrow One more arrow Forever always young |

Kate Bush : The Kick Inside - Beautiful Song, Beautiful Lyrics
I've pulled down my lace and the chintz. Oh, do you know you have the face of a genius? I'll send your love to Zeus. Oh, by the time you read this, I'll be well in touch. I'm giving it all in a moment or two. I'm giving it all in a moment, for you. I'm giving it all, giving it, giving it. This kicking here inside Makes me leave you behind. No more under the quilt To keep you warm. Your sister I was born. You must lose me like an arrow, Shot into the killer storm. You and me on the bobbing knee. Didn't we cry at that old mythology he'd read! I will come home again, but not until The sun and the moon meet on yon hill. I've pulled down my lace and the chintz. Oh, do you know you have the face of a genius? I'll send your love to Zeus. Oh, by the time you read this, From 'The Kick Inside' http://www.musicchartheaven.com/kbush/bushdisc.htm |

John Denver - "Children Of The Universe"
A heritage of vision Was given to us all To smell the rose’s fragrance To hear the songbird’s call To watch the distant moonlight fill The coming of the tides To understand that life is more Than always choosing sides And some have seen what can be seen Of sailing ships and kings And some are given feet of clay And some are given wings And some must struggle just to breathe Some have a golden spoon And some will never leave the nest While some walk on the moon And don’t you know the life that lives Within the silent hills Is just as rich and beautiful And just as unfulfilled As man with all his intellect His reason and his choice Oh, who’s to say the nightingale Has any less a voice The silver dolphins twist and dance And sing to one another The cosmic ocean knows no bounds For all that lives are brothers The whippoorwill, the grizzly bear The elephant, the whale All children of the universe All weavers of the tale So palomino lie back down And dream yourself to sleep The hawk flies with the morning dove The lion with the sheep As far away as you may go We’ll never be apart It’s in your dreams that you will know The seasons of the heart |
