Imaging a tablet

Before I go over to xda developers has anybody got any experience or links on how to deploy a standard image to android tablets. My kids school is looking at buying 30 of them (not decided which model yet) and it would be useful if we could deploy them with a standard set of apps and configuration.

'Standard set of apps".
Can you really find enough decent ones that are not 'Windows only applications'?

Obviously you need to write your own simple-ish batch type file to automate a back up and recovery.
Memory usage is small so 30 backups would not take a great deal of space, even with Rom Manager etc.

No doubt Google and even Apple are currently working on enterprise software.

Are they particularly selecting Android rather than Apple. I ask because Apple offer discounts for education purchases of hardware, and developers have the ability to offer Education discount for bulk purchases of apps, so you may find the discounts make the usually expensive Apple kit more cost effective.

AFAIK, the kit is being donate to some extent through some partnership so I am not sure if there is much choice in the type of tablet we get. I don't think its going to iPad for which I believe there is enterprise type imaging solution available.

One item that has been requested is having a standard USB port for transferring data and files around (all the kids have their own USB key in the school) which I didn't think the iPad has ?

We are having a meeting tomorrow and should know more hopefully.

There is no decision on the apps yet. I think the plan is we get the hardware and then each teacher can nominate the apps they would like on there once they have played around with the tablets.

As mentioned in my other post, I believe apple do have a enterprise solution for iPads. I have had a quick look at xda forum and it does not appear to be anything 'one click' to do imaging. The problem is the IT support is a part time lady who god bless tries her best but is not the best IT person in the world.

Its a primary school so as you can imagine the software loads quickly become 'non-standard' which causes no end of problems. I have built them a custom XP and Win7 load for their 60 desktops, 120 odd netbooks that they have, along with WOL deployment solution with custom VB front end. So now the ICT lady just has to run the GUI and click on the relevant PC to re-image it in a couple of hours. I would like something similar but for tablets.
