Onion Rings (Crisps)

Tesco's own brand (big green bag) ones used to be sublime, especially when stuffed into a baguette and washed down with a cup of Alpro Soya chocolate milk.

Unfortunately Tesco ruined them around 3 years ago by changing the recipe or supplier (now they've got a horrible sweat taste to them).

Since then i've searched in vain for a brand that uses the old recipe or supplier. Somerfield's used to be the closest (still too sweet) but, alas, they're no more too. I've tried all the big supermarket's own brand versions, but they're no where near as good as Tesco's used to be.

Anyone have any suggestions for a good brand? Preferably using the old Tesco recipe if possible.

I've tried the cheapie Redmill and Goldenwonder onion rings and they're OK (improved immeasurably if you open the packet and leave them to go stale), but nothing like the old Tesco brand.

No suggestions but I agree with you. I'd go futher as I think the quality of all the supermarket onion rings have gone down hill. The same with s&v chip sticks.

Yes! The S&V chipsticks are terrible too. Now they're far too malt vinegary. Same with the S&V spirals. I've had to give up on them completely and switch to the more expensive smaller bag brands, such as Smiths.

The changes to both the Onion Rings and Chipsticks/Spirals coincided with the full-time switch to the foil bags (previously only the extra-large Christmas-time bags were foil-wrapped), which is why i thought it might be a supplier change, but haven't been able to find anything on the 'net about it.

The last decent chip sticks I had were from M&S but that was a few years back. Not sure about the quality of their snacks nowadays.

I get Co-op 100g bags, 79p each or 2 for £1 and they're nice.

I love the Sainsbury's own brand onion rings, but they haven't had them in stock for the past 3 weeks.

I've tried both the Sainsbury's and Co-Op's branded onion rings but they're not particularly good. Certainly no where near as good as the old Tesco ones.

I haven't tried the Lidl branded ones as the closest store is a few towns away, but will certainly give them a try next time i'm able to get there.

I agree, the Co-op ones are very good. Or if you're ever in Northern Ireland then try the Tayto ones (http://cf.mp-cdn.net/87/f7/4338d7c07...44e0bb97f9.jpg) They're amazing...I used to bring tonnes back to Uni after Christmas, holidays etc.

M&S chipsticks used to be very nice years ago but now they are not so good. Smith's are nice but you hardly see them these days, our local CO-OP sells the plain ones but they are 62p for a small packet

The till at our little Co-op is still charging me £1 for two as that's what they were before, though it now says 2 for £1.20 on the bags!!

I agree with the Tesco ones! They used to be amazing.

I find blockbuster ones the best now.

It's been a few months since i made the original post but i thought i'd post again in case anyone else is out there searching.

I think Golden Wonder must use a different formula for their large and small bag onion rings as, after changing hands, my local shop is now selling the big bag version. I finally tried some last week and, while they're a little sweeter than the old Tesco recipe, they're very close.

The local shop also sells Bobby's onion rings too and, having just tried them, they are as close to the old Tesco version as i think i'm going to get. Bobby's salt and vinegar spirals are also the same as the old Tesco version (before they switched to the disgusting vinegar), so i'm quite happy.

The fact that the local shop now also stocks crusty rolls and Alpro Soya chocolate milk means i can have a good traditional lunch on occasion.

the cheap 10p ones you can get in newsagents are really nice but they can be stale sometimes.

Bobby's onion rings are very good as are their cheese puffs and bacon rashers. Not bad value considering they're sold at an economy price and the portion is large.

Not sure if they are the same under a different brand but my Tesco only sell Eastmans now and not their own brand lable.
