Went into o2 to inquire as to availability of Mango handsets, their reply was we don't sell Windows phones, have you though about the iPhone 5 comming out next month?

I asked them about the HTC HD7, and they said oh yes, we do sell that, but have you considered the iPhone 5?

So O2 obviously pushing apple hard, I just hope they do stock the new Windows phone's (I have to stay on O2, only network with coverage), otherwise will have to upgrade through carphonewarehouse, which will probably be a better deal anyway

Samsungs have AMOLED screens which should save battery a bit. One could get them now with the old WP7 for interesting prices. But the hardware is relatively old.

I bought my HTC HD7 on payg from O2 back in January. I then stuck a giffgaff sim in it. It worked out even cheaper than any other contract option I was considering for any windows phone on any network. You don't even need to unlock the phone as giffgaff runs on O2's network.

I'd be willing to sell you mine for £250. Stick a giffgaff sim in there for £10/month and your average cost for phone and mobile over 24 months is £20.42

I wonder if they are Fruit positive or just get a commission on their sales and the more expensive the better for them.

The news is that they apparently aren't even going to stock the Nokia Windows phones although, to be fair, it seems to be Nokia who weren't prepared to accept the terms being offered:

That's because knowing O2, the terms being offered were two wall spaces next to the Alcatels and no promotional work at all, with all phones being on the lowest commission band so the sales staff aren't interested in pushing it. I understand that they have the biggest share of the iPhone market due to their 2-year exclusive headstart, but I think it's a bit short-sighted to not be willing to give anything else a chance, especially something backed by a company that has never been shy about pouring money into something they believe in until it pays off (see Windows 7, Xbox, Bing)

The iPhone is a mega rip off, so I'd imagine commish on it for the salespeople would be huge comapred to other cheaper and better phones.

Although it is changing, the networks were rumoured to lose big big money on each iPhone sale.
They also paid out a large percentage of contract income for the exclusivity.

I imagine is only very recent that retailers are starting to make money on Apple stuff.

I'm a T-Mobile Samsung Omnia owner so I'll just be patiently waiting until the update comes (and hopefully it shouldn't be any longer than a fortnight).

I agree with BigM. As an overall experience, this is the premier OS. It's unparalleled integration with social media and Skydrive, efficient configuration of tools such as Office and the camera function, speed of web browsing, intelligent approach to multitasking to optimise battery performance, usefulness of the live tiles concept and sheer elegance and intuitive use make it streets ahead of iOS and Android.

I mean really, the dominance of those two OSs compared to WP7 just goes to show the power of marketing. iPhone and Android handsets advertising is everywhere constantly. The same can't be said of Windows Phone. As earlier pointed out, much like with Android, all that's now needed is one of the OEMs to produce a really breakthrough handset that creates a buzz and has strong sales. That, just as with Android, will trigger a domino effect and it really should help build great momentum.

I really think HTC and/or Samsung should stick their neck out whenever Nokia eventually churn out a knockout WP7 handset and produce something that's every bit as impressive, from a hardware perspective, as their best Android handsets and then work with Microsoft to promote the hell out of them. Heck, with all the IP and malware issues that already do and will affect the Android OS, nevermind the Motorola buyout, the likes of HTC and Samsung really need to move away from having nigh on all their eggs in one basket.

I think 2012 is going to be utterly fascinating in terms of how the smartphone market, both domestically and worldwide, develops and evolves. I have a feeling, though, that it will be good to Windows Phone.

Wait untill you try Mango Mo, seamless facebook and twitter intergration in the people hub, works brilliantly imo, but my favorite is having any incoming txt messages read out and be able to reply and send all with voice commands, I have my phone tucked in my top pocket and can reply and carry on driving or working at the same time, this also works brilliantly.

I am leaning toward getting a Windows Mobile phone. The thing that put me off was lack of apps, then I looked at the aps on my phone that I *actually* use and tbh, its about half a dozen, if that. Having one bazillion apps is all very good but if most are crap, or the same, or you never use them then its kinda pointless.

BTW, the apps I do use (in case any WM user can fill me in they are availble) are;

Sky Remote Record
BBC News
Blizzard Remote Authenticator
Google Maps Navigation
Words with friends.

Prior to Mango, I rarely used my people tile as I just found it easier to go straight into the FB app (I rarely use Windows Live). I forced my update on Wednesday and since then I find myself using my people tile more than anything else (including the FB and Twitter websites on my laptop). The integration of social media is fantastic, and everything just seems that little bit more polished, from Zune, to the Home screen.
Well done Microsoft

Using the new windows phone marketplace website (from which you can install apps without even touching your phone).

I found official apps for Sky Remote Record and Battle.net authenticator. There's no words with friends but there's a very similar app called words by post. No official BBC News apps but there are BBC news apps by third parties and lots of other news readers that can hook into the bbc news streams. Google maps navigation won't be integrated on windows phone like it is on android. If navigation is important for you - wait for the nokia phone, that will have a navigation solution even better than google's

I'd wait for the Nokia announcement at end October if you can. It's supposed to be great and Nokia has always been great for cameras.

The official BBC Windows Phone Mango app should be out in the coming weeks. I know its definitely in development as WMPoweruser reported about it a few weeks ago and had a video too.

Slowly but surely, the huge advantage the other OSs had on the apps front is diminishing, despite the big difference in quantity of apps.

It is only out of interest. I will not get another phone until next summer but at least it looks like There is going to be a credibile alternative to Android at last. I do like the idea of a Nokia WP7

to add HTTP Live Streaming Support to Windows Phone. This could mean that the BBC will release an iPlayer app for Windows Phone.

Quote:
“BBC have stated that they can't develop a iPlayer app for Windows Phone as HTTP Live Streaming protocol isn't supported. They also added that Flash wasn't supported but flash wasn't required for their app on iOS devices.

“Unfortunately, as the Windows Phone 7 doesn’t support HLS (HTTP Live Streaming) or Adobe Flash, the formats we use for streaming videos, we can’t make BBC iPlayer available on this phone at the moment.”

I purchased a HTC HD7 on O2 the first day it was available. It's since been unlocked as I joined 3, but then quickly changed to giff gaff (they run on O2's network) after I had no signal at work. I haven't yet got a notification update for 7.5 on the phone or via Zune.

Quote:
“This week, we’ll be making the update available to 10 percent of customers. If everything looks good, we’ll open up the spigot a bit more—to around 25 percent. We’ll hold there for one or two weeks, then quickly ramp up to 100 percent—monitoring quality the entire way. That’s how we ensure Mango arrives both quickly and in tip-top shape.”

Also I found this interesting

Quote:
“Rumor has it that Nokia has set a series of strict criteria regarding stock of it Windows Phone devices at O2, including volume targets, store displays and marketing campaigns, and that the wireless carrier did not agree with them.

Apparently, this determined Nokia to drop O2 from the list of wireless carriers that will first launch its Windows Phone devices later this year.”

Microsoft stated that it would be a staggered release.

o2 have a close relationship with Apple and with the iPhone coming out around the same time as the Nokia WP o2 probably wanted the iPhone 5 to have premium coverage not the Nokia. Money talks!

I've got an Omnia 7 from T-Mobile - still waiting, but i'm not overly fussed, i've waited 6 months so a couple of weeks can't hurt

Haven't seen any specs on the Nokia phones but the HTC Titan looks good to me as I like the screen size. I have a few weeks to make my decision but having looked at loads of Windows 7.5 reviews I deffo think this will be the OS for me.
IvanIV

Titan looks impressive, the screen is huge, but how long will it last between charges. HD7 with 4.3'' screen lasts about 24 hours. Something with AMOLED screen would be nice, IMO.
