Phone only makes outgoing calls

My landline phone is only allowing outgoing calls to be made.
On receiving an incoming call, it gives a half ring and then stops.
I have tried replacing the phone & the filters, but it makes no difference. has any one else experienced a similar problem?

Try a phone in the Test Socket of the master socket. If the problem remains, call your telephone service provider.

Have you tried picking up the phone after the initial ring and seeing if you can answer the call? If you can still answer the call then it's likely to be a fault at the exchange. Though as beerhunter2 says try the phone in the test socket of the master socket first to eliminate any fault in your internal wiring.

Thanks for your replies. The BT socket is the old fashioned type,& does not have the test socket. I have removed everything & plugged the phone into the BT socket, & I can make & recieve calls so this would suggest that the incoming line is OK. The problem comes back when I connect up the modem & the Sky boxes.

OK this will now need a bit of trial and error to track down what is happening.

The first thing to do is trace out the cable runs to the extensions and check for any damage. If you can, check the connections on the back of the sockets. You could try removing any wires connected to terminals 3 and 4. Just be careful not to disturb the line pair on 2 and 5. Once you have eliminated dodgy wiring as much as possible you can move on to what is plugged into the sockets.

If the phone works when it alone is plugged in then it could be the number of devices hanging off the line. A phone line should be able to handle four phones or equivalents. So one phone, two Sky boxes and the modem ought to be OK.

But it is always possible something is a bit iffy and causing the problem. So plug the phone in then add each of the other devices one after the other. Test the line after each device is added. If it works with some but not all devices connected then the load on the line is the problem. Also try it with and without filters on the Sky boxes just in case a faulty filter is affecting things. Obviously you will need to replace the filter in that case.

If it is simply the number of devices connected then fixing the problem might be a bit of a pain. It could be a faulty device, dodgy wiring or a combination of the two. That might involve paying someone to investigate and test the system out.

My dad had an identical fault years ago that was caused by the extension wiring, and rectified when that was disconnected
