No HDMI and no SD card storage, 2 big things missing plus no android market, I think I will look elsewhere.

My son who lives in the States bought me a Kindle 3G last christmas which has been brilliant. He now wants to buy me a Kindle Fire. From what I have been reading I would not be able access some of the applications in the UK and would it even be compatable here?
I am a complete techno idiot so do not understand much of what is being said on this thread but don't want him spending money on something I would maybe have limited use of.
The American Kindle has been fine except for having to use a different adapter.

I was thinking of getting a 'Fire', as we are in the USA from 21st to 30th November, but Amazon said that although a majority of the applications would work in the UK, Movie & TV streaming would not, due to copyright issues in the UK, plus I think they also said that the Amazon Cloud did not work in the UK either.

so may well plump for the Kindle Touch 3g Wi-Fi that comes out on November 21st, they say that will work fine in the UK wi-fi and 3G

Have you seen the cost of Amazon Prime?

They have their own strange prices too.
£49 in the UK, if you use Amazon a fair bit, it is well worth the money, with next day delivery on most things, ordered a couple of DS games at 6pm tonight (Tues) for the Grandkids stayuing with us, but one has a broken leg! ordered at 1800, guranteed delivery tomorrow (Weds)

It just seems quite bizarre to spend in order to spend.

I'm perfectly happy just sticking to Super Saver Delivery since i'm willing to wait an extra day or two (and it usually ships same day anyway), but i can see how it's handy for those that absolutely must have the item the next day.

But in the US Amazon Prime customers get added benefits such as streaming TV/films (and i'm sure we'll see unlimited streaming music and book rentals come online in the not too distant future).

With Netflix just announcing they're coming to the UK and Ireland next year you can expect Amazon to move to compete with their recently acquired LoveFilm. Only once they've got the content deals in place will we see the Kindle Fire released here (so probably not until, at least, the Kindle Fire 2 is released).

Swills thanks for your reply.
I spoke to Amazon Kindle support last night who were as much use as a chocolate tea pot
It might be better to wait for a UK version of Kindle Fire and as I have a Kindle 3G anyway I am fine. Think my son is just stumped for something to buy me.

We don't have the Amazon app store outside the USA so no apps here.

Also no film rental etc......

Not worth having here till it goes on sale with those extras available.

A better bet is a standard tablet if he wants to buy one.

The Fire basically seems to be a locked down portal to Amazon services. And this being so, it's why Amazon are reputedly selling it at cost or even a loss. They'll be hoping they'll make it back by selling more content and stuff.

But this is risky. What if the majority of sales are to geeks taking advantage of the situation by immediately rooting them to turn them into 'normal' Android tablets? Any that have this done, and they're not tied to Amazon services anymore. Thus their business model fails as every sale means another potential loss.

One would suspect they're not going to be happy about this and thus will ensue a cat & mouse game between Amazon trying to lock it down tighter and the hackers trying to open it up.

One could argue the exact same thing against Barnes & Noble's Nook Color in the US. Yes, a few people have bought them as a cheap tablet to root and install stock Android, but the vast majority of their sales have been to ordinary people who are using the B&N store on the device as expected. The same will happen with Amazon.

i'm thinking of picking one up when I'm in the States next week... I appreciate there will issues using it in the UK (licencing for tv/movie streaming, music, etc.) but I presume it will still work as a wifi web browser, email, etc.

plus if I download a bunch of apps while i'm away, that should get round any probelm of not being able to get them back in the uk?

i've not got a tablet of any kind, so keen to try one out, and at $200 seems a great opportunity... or would I better off putting the money towards an ipad

Yeah, it should work fine as a WiFi browsing device. Beyond that it's anyone's guess as whether or not any of the other services would work.

How long are you in the States for? Amazon are currently quoting 3 to 5 (working) days for dispatch.

It appears that is is far far from being locked down.

It now looks an incredible device yet lack of both memory expansion and HDMI detracts a fair whack.

A fairly comprehensive review. I guess the rather weird choice of benchmarks were inspired by the lack of memory expansion.

Benchmarked against the iPad, iPad 2, Xoom, Tab 10.1, Sony S and Thrive. Archos seem to be on a blacklist as usual. Quite stupid considering their 80 G9 with GPS would have made for an interesting comparison.

The lack of a card slot is also something that degrades the Samsung Nexus.

Cards are very useful for carrying extra media, espectially with 32GB being cheap and 64GB ones now available.
