This was added to the main kindle thread but though it could use it's own topic as not everyone reads that big thread.

The wireless keyboard-less one is on amazon.co.uk for £89, released on October 12th.

yup, decent price considering the price of the US one without offers/adverts and VAT instead of sales tax.

No sign of the touch yet.

My boyfriend said a few weeks ago that he'd buy me a Kindle, so this is very timely for me! I don't think I'd like a full touch screen, I don't want to have finger-smudges on my book pages.

it isn't likely to smudge as the screen is matt - not glossy like tablet LCD screens etc.

You would have to be careful your fingers were clean though.

Good to know. I think the £89 one has buttons to turn the pages rather than touch screen anyway.

If they have no keyboard and no touch how are you meant to type?

I have been looking at the comparison and it seems you are getting less - battery life is half as good (1 month rather than 2), storage is less you get 1400 books rather than 3500 (2gb instead of 4gb) and no audiobooks. And what is this about Adverts?

I also not keen on this onscreen keyboard as the navigation button would make it a lot slower.

It might cost less but I am loving my more pricey Kindle

An onscreen keyboard. I only recently got a Kindle but I'm less annoyed than I would be if the new Kindle was nicer, I'd prefer it to be black. And I don't think storage is much of a problem, you don't really need to store over a thousand books on there at any one time anyway really. And if there is adverts on it then that's just ridiculous, I would've hoped with an update they would let you choose your own screensaver or use the book covers on your Kindle as a screensaver. I'm sick of looking at the same stupid faces all the time. The case they sell with the new Kindle doesn't look that nice either, I love my leather case it just looks like you're carrying a diary when it's closed. Also don't you get an adapter with it as it looks like they're trying to sell you one seperately.

I like the storage size, because it gives me the option - for a start I could have music on my kindle as well as books, I don't know if it still does music (since it doesn't do audiobooks) but I do like to have the option and making the size smaller seems to be going backwards for me.

To be honest I am pleased that it isn't making me want to "upgrade" as I an stay with the model I have

You can get new wallpapers with the kindle (but it does mean you are jailbreaking the kindle so people are cautious about doing this)

I've read a few stories where people's Kindles have crashed because they had too many books on them, I've got 500 on mine and haven't had any problems so far. And I'm the same, I'd be pissed off if the new Kindle was amazing after only recently buying one but I actually prefer the 'Kindle Keyboard' as it's now known.

The UK one doesn't have adverts - that is one reason why it is dearer - and they were only on the idle/screensaver screen anyway.

For the non-touch you enter text using the 4-way pad - like you used to have to do on a mobile phone or entering your name etc on a console using the gamepad.

I am using about 500mb on my K3 for books - the rest is just empty - so that isn't too much of a problem. The battery is a step back but 1 month or 2 - it is still a very long time for a portable device. Not like having to charge your phone every damn day.

Yeah I worked out how to type - I find this way quite tedious much prefer the keyboard option.

I am not saying the new Kindle is bad, I just don't see that it is an improvement to the Kindle I have now. So for me I prefer the one I have now.

And yes I haven't used all my space on my kindle, but I also haven't used all the space on my iPod but I wouldn't want them to half the space on it so the option to fill it later is taken from me

As nobody has one of the new models yet, nobody can really answer that.

However, as the new model appears to use the same screen technology, and also doesn't have a keyboard so all text entry will be via a cursor key, and as it doesn't have 3G so you'll be limited to using wifi hotspots, I'd say the answer would most likely be no.

If you want something with an all-singing, all-dancing internet experience, buy a tablet, a laptop, a netbook, or a smartphone. The Kindle is a book reader first and foremost.

Not sure its meant to be an improvement just a budget model. The other keyboard models are still on sale

I'm absolutely sure it's not supposed to be an 'improvement', it's just a lower spec cheaper model - with the added benefits of being a little smaller and lighter, but with a number of losses as well.

Seems a good idea to be honest, gives you a choice of three models instead of two.

I checked the lineup and I'd still go for one of the keyboard models. I was expecting a screen improvement, but it's the same one in the new models, so it's really just making even cheaper models available.

Yes, I think their plan was just to give people the option of a cheaper player, and the touch screen one is for those who just like a touch screen. I prefer separate keys, myself. The more people they can sell a Kindle to (whatever version) the better, I imagine.

It says page turns are 10% faster.

I ordered one as the reduced size and weight is useful to me, more than the keyboard that i never use.

As the new one is a reduced specification, presumably they will still make and sell the older higher spec ones.
