Rock of Ages

After discussing the cast of the new Les Mis film and their musical suitability, noticed that this show has also been filmed for a 2012 release and we have such notable musical talents as Tom Cruise in singing roles!!! Quite a cast though tbh.

Having seen the stage show I find most of the casting pretty good, especially Russell Brand. Not sure about Cruise though, don't think I've heard him do much singing before...

Saw this in the cinema today and thoroughly enjoyed it, proper feel good film, and surprisingly Tom Cruise's voice isn't too bad!!

I've heard him singing a Def Leppard song, he has a good voice.

Tom Cruise was very good in it - excellent performance. Don't be put off by worrying about the singing - everyone is autotuned to within an inch of their life!

Overall, an OK film - has some really good moments where it is kicking, but is a bit hit and miss - drags, then picks up, then drags, then picks up etc etc.

Not up their with Hairspray, but not too bad. The latter half is better than the first half and the DS review is pretty spot on.

Well, my girlfriend (who adores musicals) and I walked out after 30 minutes. Being a 16 year old in 1987 and remembering the time well (I was actually a fan of thrash and not what we used to call pussy metal, glam rock like Poison and GNR) I found it singularly failed to capture the period but I think its main problem was that it was just so dreadful in its first half hour. Judging by one or two reviews, perhaps we should have ridden out the bad parts as it seems to have improved.

This is getting average to terrible reviews everywhere! Only positive seems to be Cruise who is playing against type and even Russell Brand has only a small role in this. Another flop for him then!

I was given tickets from SKy from a colleague who no longer wanted them. It did cross my mind to see whether I could walk into RoA, then walk out and nip into Prometheus however I had no inkling which screen it was on and the staff were watching.

Just got back from watching it, and actually ended up loving it; I agree that the first half does drag, but the second hour really picks up and becomes really enjoyable!

I enjoyed it. Was really surprised (but in a good way!) by Tom Cruise - I thought he was fantastic.

The only downside was that I was far more interested in all of the other characters than the main two (Drew and Sherrie). Overall, I thought it was a great film, I found it really funny and was quite surprised to read some of the negative reviews on the internet.

I don't know much about the film but judging by the trailer it is clearly the worst atrocity ever committed by mankind.

I could have lived with it being an out-and-out parody (though it would have had some trouble out-performing Spinal Tap), OR a slushy romance (in which case would have given it a miss).

But to do both really doesn't work.

If I had remembered to check the screen number for Red Lights, I probably would have screen-hopped 20 mins in.

edit: thinking about it, I'm not actually sure that all the "grown up" cast were on the same page with regards the parody. Best performer: Stacee Jaxx's monkey (I think it might have been a gibbon, technically - a funky one).

I saw it earlier this evening and it was enjoyable enough - nothing ground breaking, just a light entertaining film and Tom Cruise has an okay voice.

I hated it. I had low expectations and it was worse. It seemed to be trying for the so bad it's goodness of Mamma Mia, expect it was so bad it was awful. I have never been so close to walking out of a film.

Saw this yesterday and really really enjoyed it.It is cheesy but the soundtrack is great and I thought Tom Cruise and Catherine Zeta Jones stole the show.Agree with the other poster that said it a feel good film,we all walked out with smiles on our faces

I saw this yesterday and I loved it. I agree with an earlier poster about more interest in the other characters, except the main ones. I thought Tom Cruise was brilliant in it. Can't wait to get the soundtrack

thought this was awful. every plot and every character was so under developed.

when you look at say hairspray it was actually saying something about racism and the 60s. this said absolutely nothing about anything.

hated the fact most of the songs were mash ups too.

russell brand's 'jokes' were cringe making.

was as bad as mamma mia - covers of songs linked together by the weakest of plots. when you look at the great musicals they all had really strong plots.

This is exactly right - the cast were not on the same page at all!!

I saw this yesterday. The only reason I picked it was because it's a 12A and my son is only just coming up 11 and it's difficult to find a family film we can all enjoy.

I didn't have much hope for it and the first 5 minutes my heart sank because I thought it was going to be like "Glee" all the way through but it picked up.

Tom Cruise was good value, as were Alec Baldwin and Russell Brand but Catherine Z-T stole the show (the make up department weren't kind to her though, she looked really old!).

It was surprisingly risque for a 12A, some of the jokes were pretty filthy, the old man appreciated that aspect of it.

Overall I'd give it 7 out of 10, not great but a good enough laugh for a (very) wet Saturday afternoon.

First hour wasn't that great, awful....but yes, it did pick up...6/10...helped by Julianne Hough. She can't act, but she looks great, and in the rain too....plus the reporter Malin Akerman...smokin'.

But Hey Man was the Star.....

Was disappointed, could have been so much better; especially from the Hairspray director.

Zeta Jones and Cranston were so criminally underused and wasted. They were the best part for me.

Baldwin was hysterical though.

thought that myself, was looking forward to seeing walter white singing and he didnt.

really struggled to understand brand when he remembered to put on a strong brummie (is that right?) accent so god only knows how the yanks handled it.

was it supposed to be badly acted, badly scripted as a deliberate joke on this type of movie or was it unintentionally bad

It was an injustice....

But when Baldwin started to sing, at the start....
