They could keep updating it for years - or they could release a more polished and powerful version next year with Youview etc and drop support for the S7800.

My situation right now is that I've also just left Sky and I've bought a Foxsat HDR. I'm not really happy with it for many reasons, but I've realised I can sell it for pretty much the price of a brand new S7800, so thats what I'm doing. I'm sure alot more people will do the same early next year.

I was tempted by the Samsung BD-DT7800M Freeview HD+ box, but the lack of dual recording put me off. Other than that its features are awesome, and hopefully the S7800 will eventually have similar. From my limited research Freesat seems to be the better long term option as it will always have far more capacity for HD broadcasts.

One other thing if you decide to wait a bit - Sky will very soon offer you 12 months half price to try and get you back - quite a good offer depending on what you are looking for.”

Being very ignorant surround Freesat I'm considering ditching SKY in favour of Freesat so based on the above is it going to be worth my while waiting until the New Year as there's going to be greater choice in terms of Freesat equipment/service?

Informed opinions welcomed.

Just a personal opinion based on what I would do, but if you haven't got a Freesat box already, then I'd either pick up a Samsung with the cashback offer (ends at the end of this month) or a second hand Humax - try them both in a shop side by side and see which one you prefer - either way it will cost you about £170.

The Youview and G2 boxes will probably be out around March (if it was going to be earlier, I imagine they would have pushed for xmas) - and the first boxes will be expensive to gouge the early adopters. This time next year there will probably be much more choice in hardware and much better prices - plus the new services should be up and running smoothly by then.

So buy one a Freesat now, and sell it in a year to upgrade to the new stuff, will probably give you the best value for money.

Btw - if you like Sky but have a problem with the prices, you could stay with them for a year and get it half price. Sky will always give you half price service (though not on the HD part) - just call up and say the magic "I'm cancelling"

Youview / project canvas is already very late. They have never promised to launch it on Freesat (though some people hope) - at the very least, if/when it launches it will certainly be on Freeview first.

Freesat have been talking about G2 for nearly a year.

You probably spend more on Sky in 6 months than the cost of a Freesat STB.

Cheers,
David.

+1 On all of this. Regarding Youview especially would be well advised not to buy for 12 months.

I have luxury of great Freeview reception so if Freesat does not extend to same scope as Youview (and more) I'll be jumping ship by next Christmas.
