Carla screamed as she bore down with all her might while Peter felt helpless just holding her hand.
"Well done Carla, I can see a head" the midwife shouted above the noise in the room.
"Oh no more, no more" Carla said tearfully once the contraction stopped and she could stop her pushing for a few moments.
"Your doing so well sweetie" Peter said positively as he mopped her brow with a flannel.
"I can't do it anymore" Carla said desprately.
"Carla you are doing brilliantly, it will be a couple of minutes until the next contraction and then we need same again" the midwife said as Carla shook her head.
"Argh..you think the only good thing about them being small would be it would hurt a little less!"

"It doesn't quite work like that I'm afraid love. But you're doing brilliantly. A few more pushes like that one and your little boy will be here and then your daughter will be easier to push out." The midwife said as Carla bit her lip anxiously. "Peter can you see?" She asked between contractions as Peter shook his head. "Here dad, have a look you can just see the top of your son's head, he's got a mass of dark hair." The midwife said as Carla let out a cry as another washed over her. "Plea...please get him out."
"You have to push love, but seriously you're doing so brilliantly."

Peter squeezed Carla's hand supportively.
"Come on love, you can do this" he said as Carla groaned in pain.
"Push Carla" the midwife instructed and Carla bore down once more.
"Keep going, keep going" the midwife called as Carla let out guterul cry.
"Aaaaargh" she cried as she felt an intense pain.
"Thats the shoulders your feeling Carla, your doing amazingly" the midwife said as the Dr came closer hearing that the baby was close to being out.
"I...I can't do this" Carla moaned as Peter shook his head.
"Yes you can darling"
"Peter, can you go and make sure he is ok, I .....argh don't trust them to..ooooh tell me" Carla said looking at the midwife and the doctor, the intense pain causing her not to think straight.
"Carla you just need to keep pushing" the midwife said.

Peter squeezed Carla's hand supportively.
"Come on love, you can do this" he said as Carla groaned in pain.
"Push Carla" the midwife instructed and Carla bore down once more.

"Oww!" Carla shrieked as she finally pushed out her son. Peter looked at the tiny , hie eyes filled with tears as the little boy let out a cry. "He's okay, he's crying." Peter said as he kissed Carla softly knowing she was terrified that the baby wouldn't be okay. "Hello sweetheart, lets get you checked over and then you can see your mummy." One staff member said as she took the little boy to be checked over. "He's perfect Car, just so tiny." Peter said as he smiled proudly at Carla who looked in shock. "I'm just going to have a check on your little girl, check she's still in the right position and then your contractions will likely pick up again." The midwife said as she saw Carla straining to see her son. "Is he okay, honestly?"
"Perfect just smaller than what we'd like." The midwife said as the tiny boy was wrapped warmly in a blanket and brought over for Carla to see. "We're going to take him to special care but you can both have a quick cuddle." A staff member said as she handed the tiny boy to Carla.

Carla's eyes filled with tears as she finally saw her little boy properly as he was placed in her arms.
"I have been so worried about you....but you're pefect" Carla said as the tiny baby opened his eyes and stared up at his mum. Peter had to wipe away his own tears as Carla kissed their sons head.
"You are the trouble maker who has been stamping on my bladder for the past three months" Carla said smothing out the dark baby hair on her sons tiny head.
"Do you want to hold him?" Carla asked.
"No he like it with you, I will just give him a little kiss before he goes" Peter said leaning down and kissing his son. He knew they only had a short time with their son and he was happy for Carla to make the most of it.
"Right Carla, nurse Reilly is going to take him to he SCBU now" Claire said as Carla nodded tearfully.
"Be careful with him, wont you?" Carla said as the nurse nodded scooping the tiny bundle into her arms.

"Bye sweetheart." Carla said as the nurse left with the tiny baby boy in an incubator. Peter kissed her softly knowing she was still worried that she had to go through labour again with their daughter. "Okay Carla you let me know when you feel your next contraction because this little lady looks ready to make her appearance." Claire said as she checked the image on the monitor which showed the second twin was in the right position for birth. "Listen Carla, this time it'll be a bit easier but I need you to listen to me so you don't push too quickly." Claire said as Carla nodded.

"I love you, I know you can do this" Peter said kissing Carla's temple.
"Aaaargh" Carla yelled as the now familliar pain hit her.
"Right Carla push until I tell you to stop. Push, push, push,push- STOP. Now take a few breath and relax a ew moments" teh midwife said as she watched Carla's progress intently not wanting the baby to come out too quick.
"Is she coming down ok?" Carla asked desperate to know how her daughter was.
"She is a bit more awkward than her brother but she is on her way"

Michelle stood up as she saw a timy baby being pushed by in an incubator. She had heard Carla's screams and then the cries of a baby.
"Is this one ok, its my sister in law's?" Michelle asked the nurse.
"He is a small but doing well, I am just taking him to the SCBU"

Michelle looked down at the baby and felt her heart melt as she looked at the little boy. "I'm going to have to take him off now, your sister-in-law's doing well though." The nurse said with a comforting smile for Michelle as she sensed it mus be worrying for her sat waiting and not knowing what was going on.

"Carla you need to be really strong for me now and just breath when you feel contractions as I think we might have a problem with this little one's cord. I think it could be round her neck. I know this is really painful but I'm going to try and move the umbilical cord okay." The midwife said as Carla looked terrified and clasped Peter's hand tightly. "She has to be okay Peter." Carla sobbed.

"Right just resist the urge to push for a few moments Carla, I know its difficult but you need to be strong" the midwife said as Carla looked terrified.
"Its ok darling, Claire has spotted the cord, she is going to sort it" Peter said seeing Carla wince.
"Right, this will hurt Carla. Dad, I need you to keep her going here while I sort this cord" Claire instructed and Peter nodded supporting Carla by the shoulders.
Carla screamed loudly but Peter kept her steady, hating that she looked in agony.

"Hey, it's okay." Peter said as he kissed Carla's hair gently hating that she was in such pain. Carla let out a cry as Claire managed to dislodge the cord from around the baby's neck. "That's it Carla, the cords not around her neck anymore so when you get the next pain I want you to push." Claire said as the doctor hovered close by should he be required to help out in any way. Carla bore down as she felt the next pain and squeezed Peter's hand tightly. "That's it love, a bit more." Claire said as Carla shook her head.
"I can't. It hurts so much."
"You can sweetheart and you're almost there now. If you feel tired just have a break for the next one but this little girl wants a cuddle like her brother had and I don't think she's going to be patient enough to wait."

"Oh Peter" Carla said wearily as she took a break from pushing.
"You are doing just amazingly, I have never been so proud of anyone" Peter said kissing Carla as she clung to his arm.
"I miss our son already" Carla said as Peter nodded.
"He is gorgeous isn't he, we can go and see both of them once she is out" Peter said giving Carla somthing to focus on other than the pain.
"You are going to need a few stitches Carla once we have delivered the placentas I'm afraid and then I recommend at least a couple of hours bed rest" the midwife said not wanting to give Carla unrealistic expectations of what would happen after the birth.
"Aaargh no, I am going to see my babies once you are done torturing aaargh me" Carla said as Peter surpressed a chuckle.
"I will find a wheelchair from somewhere and we will get you up there love" Peter reassured.

"Okay, looks like your little girl is ready to come meet you. One big push Carla." The midwife said as Carla scrunched up her face and pushed with all her might. "And here she is." The midwife said as she smiled at the crying baby girl who seemed extremely displeased at coming into the world earlier than planned. "Oh Carla love. Look at her." Peter said overwhelmed as their baby girl was taken over to be warmly wrapped up and checked. Carla felt tears rolling down her cheeks as the midwife headed over. "Let her Dad hold her." Carla said as she had held their son and she only felt it fair Peter got to hold their daughter. "Oh princess, look at you." Peter said as he took the tiny baby in his arms, her dark eyes widely peering up at him.

"I have a daughter....she's beautiful Carla" Peter said emotionally looking at the perfect, tiny little girl.
Carla peered up lovingly at her daughter despite her exhaustion. "Is she ok?" Carla asked worriedly.
"She is smaller than her brother, but she seems to be breathing Carla. We will get her along to the SCBU after you have had your cuddles and do a full assesment" the doctor said.
Carla smiled at Peter who was uterly absorbed in their daughter she just new their daughter was already a daddy's girl.
"Oh god help anyone who ever hurts you princess" Peter whispered as he moved his thumb over her tiny cheek.

"God help any boys she brings home when she's older." Carla said as she gently stroked her finger over her daughter's tiny hand. "Here you have a hold." Peter said as Carla shook her head and instead gently kissed her daughter's forehead. "I think they want to take her to the SCBU. You go too. Tell them both how much we love them." Carla said as Peter looked at her.
"But l you've got to have stitches and things."
"Exactly, you don't want to be here for that. It's better you sit with them, and get some photos if you can. Oh and can you ring Darren for me or get Chelle to." Carla asked as Peter nodded.
"Are you sure you want me to leave you?" He asked as Carla nodded as the nurse whisked their daughter away. "Yeah, they need their daddy right now." Carla said as Peter smiled at her and kissed her lips softly. "I'm so proud of you Car. You were just amazing."

"You must be a very proud daddy" the nurse said as they left the delivery room.
"Yes too right they are right crackers" Peter said watching his daughter look tiny in the incubator.
"Peter" Michelle said standing up as she saw Peter.
"Oh let me intorduce you to my daughter" Peter said proudly.
"Aww she is so beautiful Peter, and how is Carla?" Michelle said.
"Exhausted but relieved they are here, honestly Chelle she was amazing in there" Peter said.
"Sorry I'm afraid this little one has to get to the SCBU" the nurse said hating to interrupt.
"Its ok I am coming up with you, Chelle can you phone Darren for me and let him know they are here- the numbers in my phone" Peter said handing Michelle his phone.

Michelle nodded glad she could help in some small way and relieved that so far everything was okay. Scrolling down to Darren's number she rang it hoping he wouldn't be in too foul a mood at been woken in the early hours of the morning. She yawned slightly as she waited for the call to connect through. "Hi Darren it's Michelle, Carla's sister-in-law..............She had the twins a few minutes ago and well Peter asked me to ring you...........Wetherfield General but there's no point coming until later today.........I haven't seen her yet but Peter said she were amazing." Michelle said as she ould hear the concern in Darren's voice for his sister.

"Okay we'll put them next to one another, do you have names for them or shall we just write baby boy and baby girl Barlow on the labels for the incubators?" The SCBU nurse asked.
"Erm he's Harry and she's Esme. How's he doing?" Peter asked as he could see little wires and tubes connected to his son. "Well he's doing okay, needs a little help with his breathing but so far is reacting well to our tests. They're good weights for twins at this gestation."

"How is Esmee doing?" Peter asked as the doctor conducted a couple of prelimanary tests.
"She seems to be having a little trouble keeping warm, nothing to worry about, but I am going to put a foil blanket around her for a little while" the doctor said as the nurse passed him a foil blanket for the tiny baby.
"Once she is warm I will put in the tubes like her brother for feeding and breathing" the dostor said as Peter nodded, struggling to take everything in with all the bleeping monitors.
"she will need a nappy, like Harry has" Peter pointed out seeing somone had put a nappy on his son.
"i will sort that Mr Barlow, and I will get her a little hat to keep her head warm" the friendly nurse said.
"My...my partner and I brought hats for them but they might be too big" Peter said overwelmed with the situation and extremely tired.
"Well we have some here but you can try the ones you brought later" the nurse said.

"You did incredibly well Carla, pushing two of them out with very little pain relief and added complications" Clare the mid wife said after she had given Carla the stitched she needed.
"Thanks for all your help...and sorry for all the screaming. I just want to see my babies now" Carla said.
"I know you do but will you please just rest, even for an hour and then I will sort you out a wheelchair"

Carla tried to sleep but despite her tiredness from the birth she was struggling to fall asleep with the worry she had for her two tiny children. "Carla you'll not be any help to the little ones if you don't get some rest." Claire said as she looked at her patient. "I can't sleep when I don't know how my babies are. Can I see them soon like you said." Carla asked as Claire sighed. "How about you get an hour or so sleep and then we'll arrange for someone to come and help you to the SCBU."

"Hey sweetheart, you been good for the nurses." Peter said as he looked at Esme who looked up from been wrapped in the foil blanket. "You know your big brother can't wait to meet you both." Peter said as he smiled slightly as Esme poked her little tongue out. "I'm going to attach the tubes and things now her tempreture is regulated." The paediatrician said as he opened the side of the incubator. Peter looked over to his son who was sleeping in his incubator. "How long will they have to stay here for?"
"It depends. They do seem to be doing well for their gestation but I'd say at least 3 weeks. We'll want them to be over 4 and a half pounds before we release them and be able to digest their milk properly."
