I am reading Astonishing X Men right now, a lot because of the Joss Whedon thing. Quite enjoying that. But once I finish that I wonder where a good place to read the comics from would be?

Hang on a month or so and wait for 'Uncanny Xmen' and 'Wolverine and the Xmen' to start from issue 1... Should be a good jumping on point and you'll be just as confused as the rest of us, lol! (I've been reading Xmen stuff since the late 80s...)

I started with Essential Classic X-Men Vol 1.
528 pages of X-Men action from the very beginning. Currently £9.49 at Amazon. |

The US stable of X-books is a bit of a mess at the minute with so many characters, and the new relaunches will probably be referencing the event that caused said relaunch so it might be confusing for a new reader.
I'm a big fan of those Essential volumes. Sure they are in black & white, but they offer tremendous value for money, plus the issues are so filled with plot, they make most of today's comics look ridiculous in comparison. |

I must admit, I dropped the X-Men titles about 5 years ago - there was just too many titles to keep a track of and it became a hell of a mess (ironically, my beloved Avengers ended up going the same way, but I can keep on top of them).
So I'd recommend picking up some of the old TPBs - the classic (and obvious) ones like the Dark Phoenix saga, Inferno, etc. but also grab any of the ones from the Grant Morrison run on New X-Men - the last X-Men stories I really enjoyed, and probably give a lot more relevance to today's stories than any of the other titles |

The crossovers and retcons and parallel timelines are what stops me getting back into comics - well that and the cost.

Try new x-men by grant morrison, they're currently reprinting them, i think there are 8 or 9 volumes and there are 6 out so far, these books are what eventually leads into astonishing x-men, so you can read about the whole emma/cyclops affair and how jean grey died, its very well written with great plots.

One reason I dislike comics are because of the cross overs.parrell times/reversions and spin offs.
Batman was terrible for it, give me a Beano comic any day. |
