Universal remote Question
Rolandh
01-10-2011
I'm thinking of asking the wife to get me the Logitech Harmony 300i for my birthday and wondered if it's any good for use with the Humax Foxsat-HDR as it's the only one that I've seen that looks any good that is of a reasonable price?

I have it and use it for both my Foxsat HDR and my Humax Fox-T2, together with the TV and DVD. Execellent remote, best universal I've ever had.

I'll deffinately try and persuade the wife to get it me for my birthday. I tried setting up the HDR remote to work with the TV but for some reason the HDR wont work the TV's built in Freeview EPG.

Just waiting for amazon to deliver this remote. Will let you know how it goes.

The only worry I have is how to access the Humax's Guide with this remote.

It seems that if you press the 'Guide' button you'll be taken to the bug-ridden 'Guide' that takes ages to load. I'm not sure you can programme in the 'Schedule+Red' workaround to get the Guide immediately with this remote. The option to assign 'activities' - that is, functions that take more than one button push, only seem available on more expensive Harmony models.

Obviously, this isn't Logitech's fault and gives another reason for Humax to get their finger out an sort out this bug.

Anyone got the Harmony 300 and encountered/solved this problem?

Not got a 300 but the model I have lets you have the schedule and red buttons side by side. As I tend to look at the schedule before accessing the guide anyway there was little point in using a macro to simply press two buttons.

I use a Logitech Harmony 525, which costs a little more than the 300i, but is well worth it imo. Having the screen with which you can set up almost unlimited custom labelled buttons is very useful. I've had it for about 5 years and its been adaptable to all kinds of different AV setups - and crucially the whole family has found it easy to use. Without the small screen this would have been much more difficult.

I've also had the Harmony 525 for a while and found it does everything I want (though it can take a bit of effort to program sometimes).

Very impressed with the 300. Took a tiny bit of tweaking for the Humax HDR. Had to add 'Media', 'Opt +' and 'Schedule' buttons to the Harmony. But the Logitech software makes that pretty easy. I had to remember to keep the remote pointed in the right direction as it goes through several commands for 'watch tv' - otherwise you end up with so thing on and some still off.

The main bonus is that the volume control can be assigned to stay with one device (in my case home cinema set up) whatever mode the remote is in. So much less swapping of remotes and modes.

It seems the only difference between the 300 and the 300i is that the 300 is matt and the 300i gloss. The 300 is about £16 as opposed to the £24 for the 300i - so that's £8 extra for annoying finger marks!

+2 - the LCD is a god-send for the occasionally used functions, controls TV, HDR, projector, BluRay, Media Player and Amp, I hardly ever get the original remotes out.

EDIT: The last few good ones on ebay have gone for circa £20 - its a no-brainer for that money ! Look for wear on the colour buttons at the bottom, thats the bit that wears off first.

I have the 600 model which I think is the same as the 300 but with a LCD screen and if it is the same as the 300 it should have a “Help” button that when pressed, it sends all the commands again until the system is all up and running.

I found this very helpful on many occasion.
