Ok, so if the Doctor didn't really whisper his name into River's ear (instead saying look into my eye), how did River manage to convince Tennant's Doctor that she knew his name??

He told her later. Possibly at their real wedding.

Or perhaps in a more intimate moment after the wedding.

Actually hid did both, we just not hear the name part, only the bit we needed - ie the look into eye. knowing his name is not we need to know

Only Moffat knows....in fact, I wouldn't be surprised if even he doesn't know...

She probably finds out when The 'question is asked' (the question being his name and silence falls?)

He probably got called "Tess" at school. Poor child. No wonder he was lonely!

that was quite sweet when the Doctor said to River to look into his eyes. and then there was a fellow talking but at least he helped the Doctor out.

If I remember correctly, just before River tells the Doctor his name, she says something like "I'm so so sorry", which is the phrase the 10th doctor used a lot when talking to someone who was doomed...

Which suggests that the Doctor (and presumably other Time Lords) would only reveal their real name just before death. Or maybe they choose an additional name at the end of their lives, to describe their existence.

My guess is that the Doctor told River / Mels his name when he was dying in LKH. He said something like "Tell River Song I really loved her, and my name was ...."

Does that make sense to anyone else?

I've always thought that if Timelords regenerate to look different they wouldn't actually take a name .

The question could be two fold as mentioned as in who is the Doctor or what is the Doctors name.

As timelords don't seem to reveal their names then it must of some importance.

I thought the Doctor already told her his name when he died of poisoning just before she gave him her regeneration.

The Doctor: SAY MY NAME, RIVER.

River: I don't know it!

The Doctor: Oh, uh, I guess you don't. I suppose I ought to tell you that. Damn that killed the mood, didn't it?

If Gallifreyans/Timelords don't have names then would Rassilon be a 'title' / 'rank' as opposed to the name of Timothy Daltons character in Series 4 ?

They do have names, but some of them seem to prefer to go by chosen titles. We've known some that go by their names (Romana, for instance) and it is confirmed that the Doctor has a name that is secret.

Why it's a secret, we do not know.

Rule 1: The Doctor lies.
He could've told her something that she THINKS is his name, but it could be just one of many misnomers he tells people in emergencies. Ten could've heard it whispered to him in the Library and thought "Allo...yeah, looks like my future's in a spot of bother if she's using one of my secret codewords and thinks it's my name''

she knows his name.

He told her the question. the oldest question in the universe, and it isn't doctor who? it's doctor why?

We also know that the Doctor and the Master both chose those names for themselves.
