Having a bit of an argument with my mate so I'm putting the question to DS. They've sold a lot less than Steps but surely that can be put down to the popularity of the internet (i.e video sites, illegal downloading etc).

Famous or successful? You can't really compare sales from 10 years ago to sales now, album sales are so much lower nowadays so yes, they've sold less than Steps but it's not really representative of their popularity or success. Things are a lot more slower in general, Steps churned out 16 singles (including a few double A sides), in the same amount of time, The Saturdays have released 11 singles. The Saturdays haven't really gone 'global' yet either, Steps were promoting and selling their CDs worldwide.

It'd make more sense to compare them to someone around now. They're reasonably successful with nearly 3 million records sold in a year. In terms of fame, they're probably one of the biggest brands out there in the same way Steps were while they were at their peak.

I would say they are definetly household names in the UK & Ireland. They have been active now for 3 and a half years and are almost 12 singles into their career which is really something to be proud off.

Unlike Girls Aloud I dont see them falling out/going for solo careers either so I can see them lasting many more years and albums if their fanbase continues to support them.

You can't say that why they are only 3 years into their career.

Well they have been together for almost 5 years seeing as they formed in early 2007 and they still seem to all genuinely get on with each other with no ego's there.

Girls Aloud were already starting to fall apart by that point with Cheryl ready to do X factor and turn into the unlikeable twit she is today.

I don't see The Sats making the same mistakes, I believe Una's baby will bring them even closer together myself.

I don't think they're that famous, tbh.

On the documentary they did last year (The Sats 24/7) there were occasions when Frankie went to a supermarket, Vanessa stood about outside her street talking to a camera, Rochelle went in a shopping centre to buy washing machines and a bed, Mollie went to a spa and Una floated around in public and nobody seemed to take a notice of them or even acknowledge their existence.

Even on this flip camera moment..

People just seemed to look at them as if they didn't know who they were.

I doubt most ordinary people would walk up to one of them when they're surrounded by a big camera crew.

I would.

But in that clip I posted, there's a girl sitting reading a magazine at the airport with her foot on the chair next to Vanessa. They're talking about their music video and yet the girl doesn't even look up or acknowledge them. And you'd expect SOMEBODY to be standing in the background with their pals going "omg it's The Sats" and taking pictures and stuff.

I think they could walk down the street and most of them would go unrecognised.

They are reasonably well known. Most folk in their teens and twenties would probably know who they are (although I think Frankie is the only one I could pick out of a line up) but for example I don't expect my mum would have heard of them.

As pop bands go then, quite well known, but I don't think they are that sort of Spice Girls type act that pretty much everyone would have heard of.

i think it might be the thing that splits them up... 3 years of mediocrity, 3 years and have still failed to be a 'big' name in the same way girls aloud, sugababes , spice girls, were. una, out for 6 months or so... i cant see it myself, they may take a break over the birth but come back to more mediocrity?..

but in saying that my earlier predictions of them splitting have been wrong!

Less famous than even Katie Price, probably. Granted, she's been producing her brand of shit for quite a while now. The Saturdays are still relatively new mistakes.

Well considering they have been around for about 3 years, I dont think I would recognise ANY of them if they walked past individually, whereas The Spice Girls after a few months would have been recognised ANYWHERE. So in answer to the question.....not much.

I think if you say to most younger people (13-30) who The Saturday's were, they'd know. So they're famous enough. I'd recognise all of them if i walked past them and I'm not even a fan.

They are very famous in the UK and Ireland. Una was supposed to be a judge on The Voice of Ireland...

They're great wanking material, but so is The Sun's Page 3, and thats about it. Not famous but noticed.

I'd say they're very famous. I don't know anyone that hasn't heard of them, even people that are not into 'pop' music. And those that are into pop music will appreciate what they have contributed to the music scene for the past few years. Calling them 'wanking material' is extremely derogatory.

What have they contributed to the music scene?
The production is generic, the lyrics are bad, there's no personality...

I know each of their names though except Frankie and Mollie I couldn't say which is which. They are quite famous my dad's 40 and he's heard of them. He does work in a school teaching numerous 13 year olds so that may be why
