The answer probably depends on the printer model and it's capabilities some HP printers work directly from IOS devices some don't, some can be made to work with additional paid for Apps.

I have an iPad1 and a HP wifi printer and have used Printer Pro for months with no problems Think it was pretty cheap, too - I'm not big on paying a lot for apps!!

I just had a quick look on HP's site and that model doesn't have ePrint which would have allowed the iPad print directly to it, but another search reveals this from HP user forum

“We can still use c309g printer with iPad. All we need to do is install HP iPrint app in iPad and use it for printing provided printer should be connected in wireless.

Thanks Erlang for the link to the Airprint compatible printers list.

I found out recently that Epson were releasing Airprint printers and have been struggling to find information on which UK models were compatible.
