So tech sites are going to be liveblogging the unveiling of the new iPhone(s) at 6PM, sadly Apple isn't streaming this year, but I thought it might be cool to have a discussion thread as it all unfolds.

The event starts at 6pm and is being covered by most tech sites including engadget.com and macrumors.com

8 Hours, 19 minutes to go!

I'm not holding my breath again this year. So far every iphone since the original has been a bit of a damp squib and has never offered anything new. However as always i wait to be surprised.

Apple doesn't allow live video streaming so it's highly likely that this will just be a text based blog.

I would suggest Engadget as a good place to follow the breaking news. They have a live blog, are very reliable and are having a live report from outside the venue.

I bet the specs will be on par with the SGS2. And no doubt they'll be boasting about how original and magical iOS5 is

ooh can us haters join in on this thread, no doubt only watching because we're secretly jealous I tend to go for the adjective 'revolutionary' myself

No, haters can't join in so there! If you don;t like Apple stuff then there's no need to read about it either

We will see iphone 4S announced today, not an iphone 5 (although this will technically be the fifth iphone released).

Expect (probably, maybe):

8MP Camera
A5 Processor - same as ipad 2
16gb for £399 unlocked, 32gb for £499 unlocked and £599 for 64gb unlocked
8gb iphone 4 for £299 unlocked
No new design apart from a slight change to the antenna around the edge (which will just be one of the balck lines missing)
ios5 feature Assistant (voice activation for most of ios5) to only run on new iphone 4s and ipad2
Release date to be 14 October 2011 in the States (we might be lucky and get it the same day, if not it will either be 21st or 28th October for the UK)
Ios5 will release within the week (Monday is suggested, but as of yet no final version of the software has been released to devs so that might not happen. Unless they announce the gold release of the beta being sent to devs immediately after the announcement)
Official Facebook ipad app

I also reckon we will see a true iphone 5 redesign in the spring. I predict from now on we will probably see new designs hitting in the spring with spec updates occuring in the autumn (there has to have been a good reason to delay the release of a mere spec update to the iphone 4. There is no way there have been any production issues with the 4S or there is anything in it that couldn't have released in July. This is a strategic delay to move release dates to two a year instead of having one slap bang in the middle).

Apart from the last bit (that's my guess entirely) all of the stuff I have said is out there on the web, I've just filtered out what I believe is the likely case and igonored the crap and put what I really want them to release aside.

If iPhone 5 isn't released today, it'll never be released.

Naming the 2012 iPhone "5" would be incorrect as it would be the sixth iphone. But jumping from 4s to 6 would be confusing for some. They'd have to drop the numbering all together and give them actual brandnames.. dopey stuff like "Galaxy" or "Wildfire".

I will probably wait until the end of the keynote to jump in.

My prediction will be the new iphone will be an evolutionary upgrade e..g bit more RAM, an SKU with higher storage, higher MP camera, larger screen.

In software terms, we had the iOS 5 and iCloud reveal. Not expecting much - maybe one or two more tidbits on the software front.

Expect a redesigned antenna but a still generally a "slab" device, maybe with some kind of curvature on the screen. i.e. not massively different from what the competition has been revealing.

That's kind of true, but I think they might still stick with the 5 as Americans are very thick. If an iphone 6 is released they'll want to know what happened to the iphone 5 and where they can get hold of one (case in point: The Madness of King George III had to be renamed to just The Madness of King George because American audiences would wonder what happened in the first two films they didn;t see )

The iphone 5 will happen, but it will be a spiritual 5. They've started something now they can't stop without a complete name overhaul and I don;t think they will do that either.

However, there was no iphone 2 or 3, did they not go from iphone to iphone 3G to iphone 3GS? none of those 3 numbers related to the model number but rather the spec of the phone.

With each number will come a new design, with each new design will come an S model upgrade later on.

So, although the 5 will not be the fith model it will still exist.

Well, that's what I think anyway.

There will be no, change to the screen size (that would have leaked by now) and no change to the form, so no extra curvature (that would also have leaked). The iphone 4S will look like a 4 apart from one less black line on the antenna and text on the back to show it is an S model (note the iphone 4 does not say it is a 4 on the back of the case, nor does it states it's capacity).

I highly suspect iOS 5 will go golden master after the keynote tonight. There hasn't been a beta release since the end of August and its been normal for Apple to release the GM to the devs on the same day they have announced hardware in the past

If it does go GM I'd expect it to be released to the masses (or those masses who haven't worked out they can install the GM without being a dev) a week today if the rumoured hardware release date of 14th October is accurate

Yeah because giving them a number isnt dopey at all is it

If people get confused by a number change then really, they shouldn't be anywhere near the phone in the first place!

I would recommend http://live.arstechnica.com/Event/iPhone_5 as i find them to be very reliable and fast as well as having plenty of pictures.

Indeed it should say 5pm GMT or 6pm BST.

Either way it's in 1 hour and 25 mins

Yeah, I made that mistake on another thread. I always though GMT was whatever the time was in London, but you live and learn.

It's 6pm London time would be an easier description I think.

Aaa so excited, thinking about selling my Nokia E7 to get this phone. How much will it go for? I stupidly bought it for £400 and it wasn't worth the money to be honest. (Luckily I didn't pay for it, Bank of Dad did )

So I should use this site for photos? http://live.arstechnica.com/Event/iPhone_5

Any live streams though??
