The specs on their own aren't important. It's what the OS and app developers can then do with the hardware that really matters.
I'm quite fond of some aspects of Android but the plethora of different devices with different hardware specs is an obstacle for app developers. It becomes impossible to properly leverage the performance of devices because there are just too many possible configurations to consider.
It's far simpler with iOS as there are far less hardware configurations to worry about which means properly leveraging the hardware becomes easier.
One of Apple's design goals is to provide a better user experience than anyone else does, and this is something they consistently achieve, regardless of whether or not their devices win tech spec top trumps with the competition.
