Indeed, you just have to look at Windows 8 to recognise tablets are definetly here to stay.

Tablets are not going to replace the PC or Laptop.

If you use your laptop for internet, email and the basics, then a tablet is ideal.

However, if you use if for 'proper' work such as graphic editing, video editing or programming, then a tablet is useless.

The ipad is ok but it doesn't really do anything my Macbook Pro or ipod touch can't do. It would never replace a full laptop with OSX/Windows/Linux and a keyboard.

I can curl up in my chair with an iPad and use it for the next ten hours. Obviously a feckless way to spend the day but possible. You can't do that with a laptop. Compared to the iPad, carrying a laptop about feels like lugging a wardrobe about.

But it's not designed to.....

It's an instant on machine that you can surf, email, show pictures, play games, compose music, draw....

It's not for complicated spreadsheets or calculations or typing a 10,000 word dissertation in one day.

Fully agree, 90% of the time I used my laptop to do just that! Now I just sit on the sofa or in the garden and use my iPad.

Also it just sits on the coffee table for anyone in the house to use and it gets constantly used all day and charged every night.

Its gets used way more than the 2 iMacs in the house, which only really get used for work.

I think there is space for a portable device you wary everywhere, a casual device that's light and has great batty for everyday task and a laptop/PC for more intense tasks.

I bought a 32GB WIFI version, I can't justify 3G for what I use it for. Being a photographer an iPad gives me a way of giving the client a hands on experience looking through the photos. Far easier for clients and the screen is excellent for this. Create galleries of the various subjects covered and show what you can do.

However it is an amazing multimedia device for anyone, watching films, internet shopping (Food especially as you can be looking in cupboards as you order)
Great for using internet while on holiday. I have a fantaastic weather app, that saw the heatwave recently almost a week before BBC Metoffice forecasts did.

Will be handy when in Lanzarote next year for maps etc.. and when relaxing in the hotel..

So far I am loving this device and use it everyday. However it needs to win me a couple more clients before it is completely justified..

The thing preventing me replacing my laptop with a tablet of some sort is I think I would lose the ability to download photos from camera/card reader to tablet/laptop then email away on site. Am I right that tablets can't currently do this? Ipad certainly doesn't have USB in of any sort right?

Not directly but apple do an SD card reader for about £30 or so that plugs in to the standard connector socket at the bottom.

interesting...this I presume:
http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MC531ZM/A

says it will also download from a camera's USB cable. Looking through the reviews, it seems like it's not a troublefree solution e.g.

Quote:
“ wanted to delete the files from the iPad to get back the space. This is when I realised you can only do this ONE FILE at a time! Each deletion takes about 5 seconds because you have to wait for the animation to complete...! It took me more than an hour to get this done, I've never been so bored in my life.”

Potentially a fail on the user's part though.

hopefully Samsung has something similar, though a cursory glance suggest perhaps not.

A unique ipad feature i actually want *falls off chair and drops Android phone*

edit:looks like Samsung may have a similar thing. Phew!

Yeah, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 also has an SD card reader accessory.

How can the ipad2 be value for money when its hard drive spec is very small?”

Oh God, here we go again. Laptop != tablet.

Why would anyone buy a laptop when for the same money you can get a better desktop?

Why would you buy an off-roader when a cheaper saloon will corner better?

Why would you buy an oak table when a pine table is cheaper and yet still strong enough to hold the evening meal?

Do you get it yet, OP?

As pumazooma says you can get an adaptor that will allow you to connect a card reader to your Ipad, however I prefer to have galleries so sync from the laptop to ipad.

Once you have your folder tree you just save any further images to those as copies and then point Itunes at it.

Example main folder call it "iPad" Then within that Night and long exposure, Fashion and portraits, landscapes and then put relevant images into them. then the iPad will have a gallery structure or you can see all pics by pressing on an icon.

You can use the SD part of the Camera connection kit to transfer files direct from an SD card or the USB part to connect your camera via a USB cable.

However I have gone a little more exotic than that.

From time to time I've used an Eye-Fi (SD) card in my DSLR camera and transferred JPEGs wirelessly to my iPhone (I imagine an iPad would work just as well) using software called Shuttersnitch (available the iTunes store) via a MiFi mobile hotspot. Once on the iPhone, transferred them to Flickr.

It's not super fast but it does work.

Eye fi would be very handy but they refuse to bring out a Compact Flash version There's hardware wifi attachments for my Canon, but they cost almost the price of a laptop and a tablet combined

I have that app on both my iPhone and Android phone. It's brilliant. The mother in law is a weather obsessive, and she bought it for her phone, and loves it!

Can someone comment on what happens to exactly 720p movies playing on the £250+ Android tablets that all have 1280x800 resolution.
720p is 1280x720 so does it stretch vertically or does it give a small 40 top and 40 bottom band? Stretch, also like compression of course would degrade the picture slightly.

And what is to happen to that Sky iPad app considering it is Apple who almost all profit income of content?

But is it better than an ultraportable laptop (the macbook air variety, not netbooks)?

I think touch is fine on a phone but would get tiresome quickly. For serious browsing, I want a keyboard and mouse.

I hardly "use" my desktop anymore - apart from for downloading music and TV which I then watch or listen to through my home cinema setup using PS3 Media Server, or on the go on my iPad and iPhone. Even any casual Internet browsing is done on my iPad.

Fair enough. Was just going to clarify that AFAIK the app is free and Apple make nothing from it. Sky make the profit from the content as I believe you have to be a Sky subscriber to use it. Its only print media that are getting stiffed by Apple as customers are paying for subscriptions via Apple's in-app purchase system. Hence some have switched away from the App model to subscription only websites.

I thought the on screen keyboard would get tiresome so before my iPad was delivered I ordered a case with a built in Bluetooth keyboard, wish I hadn't bothered now as I never use it, the on screen keyboard works so well it's all I ever use.
